Determination of aflatoxins B1, G1, B2 and G2 in medicinal herbs by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

An easy method for the determination of aflatoxins B1, G1, B2 and G2 in Rhammus purshiana by LC coupled to mass spectrometry has been developed. Aflatoxins were extracted with a mixture of methanol and water and then it was purified by solid-phase clean-up using a polymeric sorbent, not described previously, for the determination of these toxins. The eluted extract was injected into the chromatographic system using a reversed-phase C18 short column with an isocratic mobile phase composed of methanol-water (30:70). A single-quadruple mass spectrometry using an electrospray ionization source operating in the positive ion mode was used to detect aflatoxins due to derivatization presenting several disadvantages. Recoveries of the full analytical procedure were 110% for aflatoxin B1, 89% for aflatoxin B2, 81% for aflatoxin G1 and 77% for aflatoxin G2. Detection limit (S/N = 3) was 10 ng and quantification limit (S/N = 10) was 25 ng, calculated as amount in medicinal herb.

Antimicrobial activities of ziziphus abyssinica and berchemia discolor.

Aqueous, petroleum-ether, chloroform and dichloromethane extracts of both the barks and leaves of Ziziphus abyssinica and Berchemia discolor were tested for activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans using the hole plate diffusion and the test tube dilution methods. The aqueous extracts showed significant activity against S. aureus and C. albicans.

[Preparation for colonoscopy using Golytely--a sure method? Comparative histological and clinical study between lavage and saline laxatives].

UNLABELLED: Looking at clinical side-effects, effectiveness and tolerability, we compared the salinic solution "Golytely" vs. a conventional preparatory procedure (Cascara-Salax) in a prospective study including 28 patients with macroscopic normal mucosa. Mucosal changes in colonic step biopsies were investigated according to prefixed criteria. RESULTS: There was no significant difference concerning weight, blood pressure, pulse rate, body temperature or essential laboratory findings. Whereas preparation using Cascara-Salax was less molesting stated by the patients, there was no difference in the way colonoscopy itself was tolerated in both groups. The performing doctor's evaluation of the colonic cleaning effect and examination conditions showed "Golytely" significantly ahead of Cascara-Salax. Histologically, colonic mucous layers depicted changes in the control groups in 63% vs. 40% in the "Golytely" group. "Golytely" seems to provide a safe and effective method of preparation for colonoscopy.

[Experimental study of wound-healing effect of the preparation "Aekol" (artificial sea buckthorn oil)].

The author presents the data of her own experimental studies devoted to the investigation of specific wound-healing effect of the new medicinal preparation "Aekol". The author proves that like its prototype, native, sea-buckthorn oil, aekol is indicated for application at the second stage of the wound process as a stimulant of reparative processes. Besides, the drug possesses antiinflammatory effect. Objectivization of the principal points of the article was performed by means of numeral moterial obtained in immunological, biochemical and morphological experimental studies.
