Needs for public health intervention and needs for new research on vinyl halides and their polymers: a public policy perspective.

Consideration of needs for public health interventions and new research requires comparative assessments of the health benefits that are likely to result from alternative uses of limited regulatory and technical resources. This paper briefly examines regulatory and research priorities in the light of recent information on the carcinogenic hazards of vinyl chloride and alkyl and vinyl halides related to vinyl chloride, the respiratory-system hazards of poly (vinyl chloride), and the reproductive hazards of vinyl chloride. Specific suggestions are made for relatively promising types of efforts in these areas.

Do parents today need drug education programs as badly as their parents needed them?

The purpose of this article was to determine if being socialized in a drug culture has increased knowledge levels and eliminated the need for adult drug education programs. A large group of parents was surveyed and it was found that the parents of the late 1980s had knowledge levels only slightly higher than the parents of the early 1970s. Today's parents significantly lack the knowledge and resources to informatively educate their children. Parental knowledge of and attitude toward drugs and alcohol were assessed in relationship to the ages of their children, parental educational level, parent's age and parent's past drug experience.

Informational needs and preferred time to receive information for phase II cardiac rehabilitation patients: what CE instructors need to know.

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived importance of selected informational needs of cardiac rehabilitation patients and to determine the best time interval to provide this information. The findings of this study support previous studies showing that cardiac rehabilitation patients perceive all information as important and, as such, it is essential that patients and families receive daily information. Information should be provided simply and in nontechnical terms. With a trend toward shorter hospital stays, this study challenges the health care team to provide necessary information in less time. Implications for staff development are described.

The task of defining computer system requirements often involves the consideration of an overwhelming number of complexly related factors. Therefore, before getting started, a project team assigned this task needs to get an overview and develop a clear understanding of the main objectives and the alternative methods it can use in carrying out its responsibilities. This article presents tips and techniques for achieving success in the requirements definition phase of a software selection process.

Show them the data. What do trustees need to know and how do they need to know it?

As trustees' accountability expands, they need to keep up with a growing body of institutional information. Unfortunately, too many boards get inundated with raw data and don't know what to do with them. That's where "dashboards" and "scorecards" that highlight trends and show comparisons of significant indicators can make all the difference.

Guidelines for meeting the communication needs of persons with severe disabilities. National Joint Committee for the Communicative Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities.

In summary, the current best practices in the facilitation and enhancement of communication among persons with severe disabilities reflect six major tenets: (a) communication is social behavior; (b) effective communicative acts can be produced in a variety of modes; (c) appropriate communicative functions are those that are useful in enabling individuals with disabilities to participate productively in interactions with other people; (d) effective intervention must also include efforts to modify the physical and social elements of environments in ways that ensure that these environments will invite, accept, and respond to the communicative acts of persons with severe disabilities; (e) effective intervention must fully utilize the naturally occurring interactive contexts (e.g., educational, living, leisure, and work) that are experienced by persons with severe disabilities; and (f) service delivery must involve family members or guardians and professional and paraprofessional personnel. These six tenets have resulted in assessment, intervention, and service delivery models that offer maximum responsiveness to the need to establish communicative repertoires that will allow persons with severe disabilities to function effectively in least restrictive environments--in productive interactions with others.
