Promoting friendship through best buddies: a national survey of college program participants.

Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through one-to-one friendships with individuals without disabilities. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with Best Buddies College Program participants located within the United States. Survey findings suggest that college students and people with intellectual disabilities benefited from participation in Best Buddies. The vast majority of college students and people with intellectual disabilities reported enjoying their experience and engaging in friendship activities that were mutually beneficial to those involved. Most people with intellectual disabilities also indicated their lives had been enhanced as a result of Best Buddies, although the percentage was lower than that of college students.

Friendship patterns among older women.

This study examined the friendship patterns of older women. The participants in the study were white, middle-class, urban women, sixty-five years of age or older. Results indicated the older widowed women received more help from their friends than did married older women. In addition, significant differences in the morale of the older women were found according to the equity of helping behaviors with friends. Specifically, those equitably benefited women had a higher mean morale score than over benefited women. The under benefited women also had a higher mean morale score than the over benefited women. Discussion centered on the importance of friends in the lives of older women as well as on implications for friendship support systems in late life.

Qualities of older women's friendships: stable or volatile?

The purpose of this study was to identify changes and stability in the qualities older women attribute to their close friendships. Seventy-four older women responded to eleven structured statements describing qualities of their relationships with ninety-one close friends. Change was found for seven of the eleven qualities examined. Differences in the women's responses were observed according to which close friend they were discussing and changes in the women's marital, work, and health status. The findings provide insight into the character of women's close friendships in later life.

Cross-sex best friendship influences on early adolescent cigarette and alcohol expectancies and use.

In this study, the author investigates the influences of cross-sex best friends in early adolescence in regard to cigarettes and alcohol. Specific goals include determining the prevalence of cross-sex best friendships, investigating expectancies and perceived approval of the use of cigarettes and alcohol, and examining substance use levels. A group of urban sixth, seventh, and eighth graders completed a survey that addressed these issues. Results indicate the presence of cross-sex best friendships in the sample. Significant findings on cross-sex best friends' influence include positive expectancies for alcohol in sixth (p = .006) grade, the perception of seventh graders that the best friend's attitudes about smoking (p = .003) and drinking (p = .001) are less negative, and higher levels of cigarette use in sixth (p = .001) and eighth (p = .024) grade and alcohol use in sixth (p = .008), seventh (p = .002), and eighth grades (p = .039).

Exploring women's experiences: the critical relationship between nursing education, peer mentoring and female friendship.

A research study was conducted in 1995 with seven women nurses from Southern Cross University, Australia. The aim of this research was to investigate the possible relationship between female friendship, mentoring and nursing education. The researchers comprised six second-year nursing degree students and the programme co-ordinator for the Bachelor of Nursing programme. This research was framed in an emancipatory paradigm of critical social science and feminist theory. Reflective journalising and interviewing were used as the research methods. The results indicated that there is an inextricable link between female friendship and peer mentoring. These two 'features' created a productive climate for shared learning, shared caring, reciprocity and commitment to one another's personal and professional growth.

Family lives and friendships: the perspectives of children in step-, single-parent, and nonstep families.

Children's reports on their experiences in different family settings (stepfamilies, single-parent families, and intact families), their contact with friends, and the quality of their friendships were studied with data from 238 children drawn from a community sample. A particular focus was on children's confiding and communication: children's recall of communication about family transitions and their current communication about stepfamily issues with family and friends. Friends were found to be key confidants. The relations between children's family lives (confiding, parent-child relationships, family activities, involvement in parental conflict, and communication about stepfamily issues) and their friendships were investigated and found to be linked to biological relatedness and family setting.

Bone and joint disease around the world. The Japan Rheumatism Friendship Association.

The Japan Rheumatism Friendship Association (JRFA) was founded in 1960 and today has a membership of about 23,000, with 47 chapters across the country. We periodically conduct a survey of our membership for the Rheumatism White Paper, which we have been publishing since the JRFA was formed. The entire membership is surveyed every 5 years; surveys give an accurate picture of the current state of the disease and reflect the fundamental activities of the JRFA; they shed light on progress in developing effective measures against arthritis, and give people a better understanding of rheumatism. The survey is also a unique resource, for it canvasses a wide cross section of people with arthritis. In Japan, the Rheumatism White Paper is widely regarded as an authoritative source. The aims of the JRFA are to promote the accurate knowledge of RA to improve mutual friendship, and to work for the establishment and development of policies against RA disease. In this way, the JRFA seeks to advance the welfare of RA patients. In this article the activities of the JRFA are described.

Letters of William Halsted and René Leriche: "Our friendship seems so deep".

The friendship of William Halsted and René Leriche is little appreciated in the annals of surgery. Although Halsted was Leriche's senior by almost 30 years, they enjoyed a relationship on both professional and surprisingly personal levels. Halsted's sincere concern for his younger French colleague was manifested by a constant fostering of Leriche's surgical research and creative ideas. Leriche was to become a life-long admirer of Halsted's surgical philosophies. He often stated that a 3-day visit with Halsted in 1913 persuaded him to stop considering surgery as a purely clinical and technical subject. During their 10-year relationship, extensive correspondence was maintained. This article will explore their friendship through analysis of their personal letters, recently found in the archives of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Written in French, they remained undisturbed for 65 years. Their present translation into English represents the first time they have been published. Vascular surgery was the major topic of discussion. Included among the many topics are surgical management of aneurysmal disease, utilization of sympathectomy, and investigations into physiologic effects of arterial ligation. In addition, many aspects of the savagery of World War I, as encountered by Leriche at the French front, and Halsted's views on various events of the conflict, are chronicled. The letters reveal a deep and abiding association between the two men which is of interest because Halsted shared his nonsurgical life with very few younger men. Their insight into specific areas of experimental surgery and ideas about various medical problems and other medical personalities are recounted.

Parent perspectives of peer relationships and friendships in integrated and specialized programs.

In-depth interviews of a large community-based sample of mothers of preschool-age children with established disabilities and those classified as at-risk were conducted focusing on issues of children's peer relations and friendships. Results revealed that mothers of children enrolled in both integrated and specialized programs perceived their respective settings as valuable for the development of their child's peer relations and friendships. Mothers of children in integrated settings reported that their child played better and was more social due to the participation of children without special needs. A similar pattern was obtained for mothers of children enrolled in specialized programs in response to a hypothetical situation. Nevertheless, both groups of mothers were clearly concerned about peer rejection and noted the importance of having other children with special needs in the program available as a means of promoting tolerance and acceptance.

The company they keep: friendships and their developmental significance.

Considerable evidence tells us that ¿being liked¿ and ¿being disliked¿ are related to social competence, but evidence concerning friendships and their developmental significance is relatively weak. The argument is advanced that the developmental implications of these relationships cannot be specified without distinguishing between having friends, the identity of one's friends, and friendship quality. Most commonly, children are differentiated from one another in diagnosis and research only according to whether or not they have friends. The evidence shows that friends provide one another with cognitive and social scaffolding that differs from what nonfriends provide, and having friends supports good outcomes across normative transitions. But predicting developmental outcome also requires knowing about the behavioral characteristics and attitudes of children's friends as well as qualitative features of these relationships.

The quality of adolescent friendships: long-term effects?

While differing in etiological emphasis, a variety of theoretical perspectives seem to coalesce around the notion that youthful friendships are "good" for development. Sociometric studies have documented that low status youth are at risk for a variety of negative outcomes, but there has been little longitudinal research focused on the qualities of youths' relations with peers. We conducted interviews focusing on adolescents' relations with their friends with 942 adolescents in 1982. In 1992, follow-up interviews (N = 620) allowed us to determine whether level of intimacy with friends was associated with a range of adult outcomes, once sociodemographic characteristics and level of family intimacy were taken into account. Adolescents who reported greater levels of intimacy with friends do not, as adults, indicate that they have significantly higher self-esteem, better relations with their parents, or increased marital satisfaction. In addition, the level of intimacy is not related to adult reports of psychological distress, involvement in criminal activity, or use of violence against one's spouse. In contrast, sociodemographic characteristics and level of attachment to parents are related to many of these kinds of outcomes. We also discuss implications for attachment or relational perspectives on youthful friendship.

The letters of William Halsted and Anton von Eiselsberg: a very special friendship.

William Halsted and Anton von Eiselsberg enjoyed an extended friendship. It was marked by a fairly continuous correspondence during a period of 18 years. Their letters were recently found in the Halsted Papers in the archives collection of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, where they had remained undisturbed for over 60 years. Written in English, this is the first time they have ever been published. They are of historical interest in that they represent the only known correspondence between Halsted and a major figure of the Billroth school of surgery. Their content provides a vivid insight into a close personal relationship that endured the tragedies and hardships of World War I.

Impact of a prevention program on aggressive children's friendships and social adjustment.

A group of 46 aggressive boys aged 8 to 9 years participated in a prevention program aimed at reducing their externalizing problems in the short term and at preventing delinquency in the long term. Outcome measures were collected during the 3-year period following the prevention program. At that time, the boys were 10, 11, and 12 years old. Outcome measures included teacher ratings of aggressiveness and self-reports of delinquent behaviors. The boys' friends were rated on disruptive behaviors by their classmates. The experimental boys' outcome measures were compared to the measures obtained from 58 aggressive boys in a control group. The disruptive ratings of the experimental and control subjects' best friends were also compared. Differences in teacher-rated aggressiveness between the two groups increased from one year to the next for the 3-year followup period. Similarly, the friends' disruptive scores differed increasingly between the two groups over the 3-year period. The effect of the prevention program on the subjects' friendships and the mediating impact of friends with regard to social adjustment were stressed.
