A (pi-extended tetrathiafulvalene)-fluorene conjugate. Unusual electrochemistry and charge transfer properties: the first observation of a covalent D(2+)-sigma-A(.-) redox state(1).

The synthesis of novel electrochemically amphoteric TTFAQ-sigma-A compounds (TTFAQ = 9,10-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene, sigma = saturated spacer, A = polynitrofluorene acceptor) is reported. Their solution redox behavior is characterized by three single-electron reduction and one two-electron oxidation waves. Electrochemical quasireversibility of the TTFAQ(2+) state and a low E(ox) - E(red) gap ( approximately 0.25 V) for 3-(9-dicyanomethylene-4,5,7-trinitrofluorene-2-sulfonyl)-propionic acid 2-[10-(4,5-dimethyl-[1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracen-9-ylidene]-5-methyl-[1,3]dithiol-4-ylmethyl ester (10) has enabled the electrochemical generation of the hitherto unknown transient D(2+)-sigma-A(.-) state as observed in cyclic voltammetry and time-resolved spectroelectrochemistry. The ground state of compound 10 was shown to be ionic in the solid but is essentially neutral in solution (according to electron paramagnetic resonance). The X-ray structure of an intermolecular 1:2 complex between 2-[2,7-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)-9,10-bis(4,5-dimethyl-[1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene and 2,5,7-trinitro-4-bromo-9-dicyanomethylenefluorene, 14.(17)(2), reveals, for the first time, full electron transfer in a fluorene charge-transfer complex.

A versatile and conformationally adaptable fluorene-based receptor for efficient binding of silver cation.

We have designed and synthesized a versatile fluorene-based receptor (1) in a one-pot reaction from readily available precursors, which adapts a deltaphane- or pi-prismand-like conformer via a simple C-C bond rotation. Such a conformational adaptability of 1 allows it to bind a single silver cation with remarkable efficiency (K approximately 15 000 M-1) as monitored by 1H NMR or UV-vis spectroscopy and further confirmed by competition experiments with tris[2.2.2]paracyclophane (or pi-prismand 2) as well as a model compound 3 containing only one fluoranyl ring.

Synthesis and structure-activity relationships of a new model of arylpiperazines. 4. 1-[omega-(4-Arylpiperazin-1-yl)alkyl]-3-(diphenylmethylene) - 2, 5-pyrrolidinediones and -3-(9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)-2, 5-pyrrolidinediones: study of the steric requirements of the terminal amide fragment on 5-HT1A affinity/selectivity.

In the present paper, we report the synthesis and the binding profile on 5-HT1A, alpha1 and D2 receptors of a new series of 1-[omega-(4-arylpiperazin-1-yl)alkyl]-3-(diphenylmethylene)- 2, 5-pyrrolidinediones (III) (1-4) and -3-(9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)-2, 5-pyrrolidinediones (IV) (1-4), in which the alkyl linker contains 1-4 methylenes and the aryl group is variously substituted. The results obtained are compared to those previously reported for bicyclohydantoin (I) and the related bicyclic amine (II) series. A considerable part of the tested compounds 1-4 demonstrated moderate to high affinity for 5-HT1A and alpha1 receptor binding sites but had no affinity for D2 receptors. The study of the length of the alkyl chain and the imide substructure has allowed us to suggest some differences between the 5-HT1A and the alpha1-adrenergic receptors: (i) for III and IV, affinity for the 5-HT1A receptor as a function of the length of the methylene linker decreases in the order 4 > 1 >> 3 approximately 2, while for the alpha1 receptor affinity decreases in the order 3 approximately 4 > 1 approximately 2; (ii) the no-pharmacophoric steric pocket (receptor zone which does not hold the pharmacophore of the ligand but holds a nonessential fragment of the molecule) in the 5-HT1A receptor has less restriction than the corresponding pocket in the alpha1 receptor. Compounds 3a,e, which are highly selective for alpha1-adrenergic receptors, displayed antagonist activity. On the other hand, the best compromise between affinity and selectivity for 5-HT1A receptors is reached in these new series with n = 1, which is in agreement with our previous results for the bicyclohydantoin derivatives I. Two selected compounds (1d and 4e) retain agonist properties at postsynaptic 5-HT1A receptors. The same 5-HT1A agonist profile found in these compounds suggests the existence of two different no-pharmacophoric steric pockets in this receptor and a different interaction of compounds with n = 1 and n = 4. The information obtained from the interpretation of the energy minimization and 2D-NOESY experiments of compounds 1-4 together with the synthesis and binding data of new conformationally restrained analogues 4k-m is in good agreement with this working hypothesis.

Giant extended pi-conjugated dendrimers containing the 10,15-dihydro-5H-diindeno[1,2-a;1',2'-c]fluorene chromophore: synthesis, NMR behaviors, optical properties, and electroluminescence.

This paper reports the facile synthetic strategy of a series of novel pi-conjugated dendrimers (G0 and G1) based on 10,15-dihydro-5H-diindeno[1,2-a;1',2'-c]fluorene (truxene) in which the benzene cores are generated "in-situ" from acetyl aromatics by the acid-promoted cyclotrimerizations. The unique NMR behaviors, physical properties, and electroluminescence device applications are also presented. Besides the purity, the structure, and the confirmation of the successful formation and isolation of desired compounds by clear assignments of every molecule by (1)H and (13)C and 2D NMR characterizations, several astonishing NMR behaviors have been observed in various solvents. For 1, chemical shift values belonging to H-2' of hexyl substituents move to the most upfield; however, such chemical shift values move from 0.48 to 0.85 ppm when pyridine-d(5) or benzene-d(6) is used as solvent. Our dendrimers as the emissive layers in organic light-emitting diodes gave blue-green light with an external quantum efficiency up to 0.16% both for G0 and for G1 in nitrogen, respectively, which exhibit unique electroluminescence spectra in comparison with their corresponding photoluminescence ones.

Synthesis of two-photon absorbing unsymmetrical branched chromophores through direct tris(bromomethylation) of fluorene.

Branched fluorene-based chromophores bearing electron-donating diphenylamino or electron-withdrawing nitro groups were synthesized as well as their linear analogues. An efficient synthetic method was developed via a novel 2,4,7-tris(bromomethyl)-9,9-diethylfluorene intermediate. The bromomethyl groups in this key intermediate were converted to either phosphonate or carboxaldehyde moieties, facilitating preparation of a high functionality branched structure. It was found that the reactivity at position 4 is attenuated in the bromomethyl and phosphorylated derivates, facilitating the selective and systematic functionalization of the fluorenyl system. All compounds were stable up to ca. 350 degrees C, except for a sterically crowded branched derivative. The linear optical properties of the compounds were investigated by UV-visible, steady-state fluorescence, and excitation anisotropy spectroscopic measurements. Fluorescence quantum yields were greater than or equal to 0.84 for symmetric linear and unsymmetric branched derivatives. Very high two-photon absorption (2PA) cross-sections were achieved (5765 GM at 520 nm and 4194 GM at 570 nm), as determined with use of picosecond and femtosecond laser excitation sources, respectively.

Global and target analysis of time-resolved fluorescence spectra of Di-9H-fluoren-9-yldimethylsilane: dynamics and energetics for intramolecular excimer formation.

Dynamics and energetics for intramolecular excimer formation of a diarylsilane, di-9H-fluoren-9-yldimethylsilane (DFYDMS) have been investigated by means of ps time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy and ab initio calculation. Multiple fluorescence decay curves were globally deconvolved to generate time-resolved fluorescence spectra and decay-associated spectra (DAS), from which species-associated spectra (SAS) were obtained. It is shown in the global analysis that there are at least three excited states: Two states are the locally excited (LE) states (lambda(max) approximately 320 nm) having lifetimes of 0.70 +/- 0.04 and 1.75 +/- 0.02 ns, and another is the excimer state (lambda(max) approximately 400 nm) having a lifetime of 7.34 +/- 0.02 ns. The species which decays with 0.70 ns evolves into a species with a red-shifted spectrum, which in turn decays in 7.34 ns. The experimental and ab initio results indicate that the rise time of 0.70 ns corresponds to the conversion of the initial S(1) LE state having a near sandwich geometry to the S(1) excimer state adopting a true sandwich geometry.

Noncrystalline phases in poly(9,9-di-n-octyl-2,7-fluorene).

Selective formation of amorphous, nematic (N), and beta phases in poly(9,9-di-n-octyl-2,7-fluorene) (PFO) films was achieved via judicious choice of process parameters. Phase structure and film morphology were carefully examined by means of X-ray diffraction as well as electron microscopy. "Amorphous" thin films were obtained by quick evaporation of solvent. Slow solvent removal during film formation or extended treatment of the amorphous film with solvent vapor resulted in predominantly the beta phase, which corresponds to a frozen (due to decreased segmental mobility upon solvent removal) and intrinsically metastable state of transformation midway between a solvent-induced clathrate phase and the equilibrium crystalline order in the undiluted state. The frozen transformation process is reactivated upon an increase in temperature beyond 100 degrees C. Compared to the amorphous film, extended backbone conjugation in the beta phase is evidenced from the emergence of a characteristic absorption peak around 430 nm near the absorption edge. For films of frozen nematic order (obtained by quenching from the nematic state), the conjugation length is also greater than the amorphous films as revealed by an absorption shoulder around 420 nm. Well-behaved single-chromophore emission with single-mode phonon coupling was observed for the beta phase; in the case of nematic films, dual-mode phonon coupling must exist if single-chromophore emission is assumed. In comparison, the emission spectrum of the amorphous film of generally shorter conjugation lengths exhibited mixed characteristics of nematic and beta phases, implying the presence of minor populations of extended conjugation similar to those in nematic and beta phases, which are of biased weightings in the emission spectra. All these films consist of nanograins (ca. 10 nm in size) of collapsed chains; the films are therefore inherently inhomogeneous in this length scale. In combination with previous observations on the crystalline (alpha and alpha') forms, the phase behavior of PFO is then generally summarized in terms of relative thermodynamic stability.

Interaction between the water soluble poly{1,4-phenylene-[9,9-bis(4-phenoxy butylsulfonate)]fluorene-2,7-diyl} copolymer and ionic surfactants followed by spectroscopic and conductivity measurements.

The interaction has been studied in aqueous solutions between a negatively charged conjugated polyelectrolyte poly{1,4-phenylene-[9,9-bis(4-phenoxybutylsulfonate)]fluorene-2,7-diyl} copolymer (PBS-PFP) and several cationic tetraalkylammonium surfactants with different structures (alkyl chain length, counterion, or double alkyl chain), with tetramethylammonium cations and with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) by electronic absorption and emission spectroscopy and by conductivity measurements. The results are compared with those previously obtained on the interaction of the same polymer with the nonionic surfactant C12E5. The nature of the electrostatic or hydrophobic polymer-surfactant interactions leads to very different behavior. The polymer induces the aggregation with the cationic surfactants at concentrations well below the critical micelle concentration, while this is inhibited with the anionic SDS, as demonstrated from conductivity measurements. The interaction with cationic surfactants only shows a small dependence on alkyl chain length or counterion and is suggested to be dominated by electrostatic interactions. In contrast to previous studies with the nonionic C12E5, both the cationic and the anionic surfactants quench the PBS-PFP emission intensity, leading also to a decrease in the polymer emission lifetime. However, the interaction with these cationic surfactants leads to the appearance of a new emission band (approximately 525 nm), which may be due to energy hopping to defect sites due to the increase of PBS-PFP interchain interaction favored by charge neutralization of the anionic polymer by cationic surfactant and by hydrophobic interactions involving the surfactant alkyl chains, since the same green band is not observed by adding either tetramethylammonium hydroxide or chloride. This effect suggests that the cationic surfactants are changing the nature of PBS-PFP aggregates. The nature of the polymer and surfactant interactions can, thus, be used to control the spectroscopic and conductivity properties of the polymer, which may have implications in its applications.

Effects of conjugation in length and dimension on spectroscopic properties of fluorene-based chromophores from experiment and theory.

A series of one-photon absorption spectra for fluorene-based donor-pi-acceptor molecules is presented and spectroscopically assigned, based upon the results obtained from time-dependent density functional theory. The computed excitation energies were generally shown to be in good agreement with experiment, particularly when compared to results from measurements carried out in a nonpolar solvent, which were available for some molecules. The computed oscillator strengths may resolve discordant experimental values in some cases, for example, for AF-380, AF-270, and AF-295. However, a quantitative comparison between computed and observed oscillator strengths is complicated by band overlapping. Thus, the computed extinction coefficients obtained by summing over the Gaussian bands are useful in such cases.

Interaction between the conjugated polyelectrolyte poly{1,4-phenylene[9,9-bis(4-phenoxybutylsulfonate)]fluorene-2,7-diyl} copolymer and the lecithin mimic 1-O-(l-Arginyl)-2,3-O-dilauroyl-sn-glycerol in aqueous solution.

In this paper, the interaction between the water-soluble conjugated polyelectrolyte poly{1,4-phenylene[9,9-bis(4-phenoxybutylsulfonate)]fluorene-2,7-diyl} copolymer and the amino acid glyceride conjugate 1-O-(L-arginyl)-2,3-O-dilauroyl-sn-glycerol dichlorohydrate (a mimic for the phospholipid lecithin) has been studied in aqueous solution by electronic spectroscopy (absorption and fluorescence) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). A significant increase in the polymer fluorescence and blue shift in its emission are observed on association with the surfactant. This is suggested to be due to breakup of polymer aggregates. In addition, the spectroscopic and photophysical data suggest this is followed by the vesicle to ribbon transition characteristic of this surfactant, leading to incorporation of single chains of the polymer within mixed polymer-surfactant aggregates. Support for this comes from preliminary SANS measurements, from which evidence for polymer dissolution and formation of two-dimensional structures has been obtained.

Synthesis of 9-alkylidene-9H-fluorenes by a novel palladium-catalyzed rearrangement

In the presence of a palladium catalyst and NaOAc, aryl iodides react with 1-aryl-1-alkynes to afford 9-alkylidene-9H-fluorenes in good yields. This process appears to involve (1) oxidative addition of the aryl iodide to Pd(0), (2) alkyne insertion, (3) rearrangement of the resulting vinylic palladium intermediate to an arylpalladium species, and (4) aryl-aryl coupling with simultaneous regeneration of the Pd(0) catalyst.

Alternating conjugated and transannular chromophores: tunable property of fluorene-paracyclophane copolymers via transannular pi-pi interaction.

[structure-see text]A series of fluorene-dithia[3.3]paracyclophane copolymers was synthesized by Suzuki coupling reactions of suitable precursors. Transannular pi-pi interactions altered the electronic and optical properties of the polymer backbone significantly. A large red shift in the emission spectrum of the unsubstituted polymer was accompanied by enhanced photoluminescence (PL) efficiency. Substitution in the cyclophane unit resulted in PL quenching.
