Study No. 4: Social, occupational and personal factors related to vocational rehabilitation.

Sixty-nine of 110 laryngectomees (63%) in Norway resumed work after operation. Re-employment was established for most of the patients before active rehabilitation was initiated. The best situational and social guidelines for successful re-employment were residence, education, and social group. Abuse of alcohol gave a poor outlook for re-employment. A thorough pre-operative history comprising social factors, life story, and previous occupation may give valuable information about prospects of postoperative re-employment. Patients with an assumed low vulnerability to stressful events and those with good adjustment proven or indicated in earlier life, resumed work significantly more often than patients with other personal and behavioral characteristics.

Vocational adjustment after total laryngectomy.

In-depth interviews were conducted with 60 laryngectomy patients. Data were collected on postsurgical rehabilitation in terms of employment, speech, and social functioning. Analysis of the data indicated that only one-third of the respondents were working fulltime or parttime. Twenty-six (43%) of the respondents were retired or not working, due to their health. Employment after surgery was not statistically related to the other measures of rehabilitation success that indicated levels of social functioning in general. In addition, most of the respondents did not cite employer discrimination as their reason for not working. Failure to work after surgery appeared in most cases to be initiated by the respondent, and did not indicate a failure to achieve a high level of rehabilitation in other areas of functioning.

[Effectiveness of the modified Linton operation in post-thrombophlebitic syndrome in the light of remote results and medical, social and vocational rehabilitation].

The results of surgical and conservative treatment of 207 patients with the post-thrombophlebitic syndrome in pedal veins suggested that modified Linton's operation produced very good long-term effect in late postoperative period. Therefore it can be used as an operation of choice in surgical treatment for this pathology. The efficiency of the operation is improved significantly, if postoperative medical, social and occupational rehabilitation is conducted on a consistent basis.
