A critical review of reflective practice in its role towards personal and professional development.

Reflection has become a prominent feature in today's nursing. Love it or hate it, the UK Central Council for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors stipulates that evidence of reflective practice is a requirement for both pre and post registration nurses. While reflection can assist in facing the increasing challenges of nursing, it can also present as a challenge in itself unless nurses have familiarised themselves with the process and feel at ease with it. The issues of reflective practice are explored to determine if it can enhance personal and professional development.

Commissioning. Building the builders.

Continual structural changes have hampered the development of the commissioning function. A new development programme is helping commissioners form networks and move away from outdated approaches. Evidence suggest commissioners benefit greatly from networking and sustained development opportunities.

Health Care Reform↗

Self-development for women in the NHS.

Training in the NHS in many careers, including nursing, does not routinely include preparation for management. This article looks at how a group of women in different disciplines in one NHS trust used the Astra programme from the equal opportunities unit at the NHS Executive as a means of developing their managerial careers. After taking part in the four-month programme, participants reported greater self-confidence, increased assertiveness and a greater sense of clarity about this career development.

Career Mobility↗

An incentive program designed to develop and reward clinical competence.

A conceptual model is presented for establishing a salary and classification plan which structures a separate career pathway for staff nurses and provides an economic incentive for incrementally achieving higher excellence as a staff practitioner. The plan establishes standard or behavioral norms for four discrete practice levels and systematically measures the content of both line and staff positions to determine their relative difficulty. Consequently equitable salary relationships are made available for all nursing activity, while simultaneously assuring a congruent and competitive posture in the health care community.
