Brock's research in stereopsis.

While Frederick Brock's contributions to vision training are numerous, little of his work dealt specifically with stereopsis, mostly concentrating on its application to diagnosis and therapy of binocular dysfunction. He did demonstrate, qualitatively, how differences in the size or clarity of retinal images affect stereopsis. The theoretical basis of his work, as well as his published and unpublished contributions, are reviewed in the context of the author's personal experience with this singular person.

The effectiveness of wide-angle fusional stimulation in the treatment of convergence insufficiency.

The effectiveness of wide-angle fusional stimulation was evaluated in 13 patients with convergence insufficiency. These patients were referred to us because they either did no respond to or could not tolerate conventional treatment. Wide-angle fusional stimulation resulted in significant enlargement of fusional amplitudes and the alleviation of symptoms for 11 of the patients. Long-term follow-up indicates that these patients remain asymptomatic and that their increased fusional amplitudes persist.

Anomalous retinal correspondence in esotropia.

The incidence of anomalous retinal correspondence (ARC) and the effect of strabismus surgery on ARC were investigated among esotropic patients. From the results obtained, we speculated that the critical period for the occurrence of ARC would be around the age of 3 years. The normalization of ARC was observed in 21% of the cases who underwent surgery. As the eye position in all the normalized cases was parallel or exotropic postoperatively, we speculated that the alignment or slight overcorrection of eye position is necessary for the ARC to be normalized.

Clinical aspects of cyclophoria: definition, diagnosis, therapy.

Cyclodeviations are rotations of the eye about an anterioposterior axis. Cyclorotations are either manifest deviations (cyclotropia) or latent (cyclophoria). Perhaps 5% of patients have symptoms related to uncompensated cyclophoria. Diagnostic techniques include fixation disparity evaluation combined with binocular refraction at distance and near. Biofeedback with afterimages, cyclovergence training, surgery, and multiple eyewear are some possible treatment methods.

[Results of simultaneous horizontal and cyclovertical surgery in esotropia].

The authors treat esotropia by simultaneous horizontal and cyclo-vertical surgery. Horizontal surgery consists of recession of both medial rectus muscles and cyclo-vertical surgery of desagittalization of the oblique muscles combined, if necessary, with a weakening of a vertical rectus muscles. Techniques and indications of this surgery are discussed and analysis made of the results of 785 cases treated with 960 operations. According to this analysis the surgical indications are adapted to this procedure.
