[HEMA-contact lens and HEMA-dressing lens-damage to the eye (author's transl)].

3 cases in which HEMA-contact lens, and 2 cases in which HEMA-dressing lens caused corneal damage were analyzed with regard to symptomatology, etiology and sequence of events. Hyperemia of the limbus is the main symptom. Avoidable causes are exaggerated tightness, overwearing, storing up of proteins, rough surface, and incompatibility of soft-lens solutions. Irreversible and largely resistant to therapy is, damage resulting from the synthetic itself.

[Subchronic toxicity of gamma-Falisan-Universal dry dressing agent to rats].

Doses of 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, and 400 mg/kg of Gamma-Falisan-Universal dry dressing agent (active ingredients including 20 per cent of Lindan and 2.5 per cent of phenyl-mercury acetate) were administered in agar suspension by stomach intubation to rats over 13 weeks, with five applications weekly. The following changes were produced: retardation in body weight, lymphopenia and leucopenia, rise of segment-nuclear neutrophils in peripheral blood, decrease of haematocrit and haemoglobin, as well as rise in activities of leucine aminopeptidase and serum glutamate oxalo-acetate transaminase. The males proved to be more sensitive in the context of their haematological parameters, while the females displayed higher sensitivity in terms of clinico-chemical values. Absolute weight increases were recorded from kidneys and liver of both males and females and from the adrenal gland of females, while weight loss was recorded from the pituitary gland of males. Changes of the same kind were expressed even more strongly, in the context of relative weights of organs. Histopathological changes were recorded from liver, kidneys, and adrenal gland of either sex, and they were histometrically confirmed. Retardation in body weight, rise in activity of leucine aminopeptidase, and weight changes of various organs were significant up to first dosage group. Analogous findings were obtained with regard to microscopic changes in kidneys. Hence, no-effect levels did not occur at all throughout the experiment.

Autonomic hyperreflexia in spinal cord injured patients: trigger mechanism--dressing changes of pressure sores.

Autonomic hyperreflexia occurs in spinal cord injured patients. The mechanism involves spasticity of the autonomic nervous system. Somatic stimuli have been infrequently reported as triggering stimuli for autonomic hyperreflexia. This article reports on a patient who experienced autonomic hyperreflexia brought on by dressing changes of pressure ulcers. Also included is a discussion of current treatment modalities with special regard for clonidine, the drug used in the case report.

[Penile dressings of C.M.H. silicone elastomer foam].

We found silicone foam elastomer (produit by C.M.H. lab.) to be an excellent post-operative penile dressing. Although compressive the material is elastic enough to avoid ischemia and to allow slight swelling of the penis. Soft, light, it is never adherent to the wound and, thus, is removed easily without discomfort to the patient.

Isotachophoretic determination of ethylenediaminetetraacetate in salad dressing, mayonnaise, and margarine.

An isotachophoretic method was developed for the determination of EDTA in foods imported by Japan. Skimmed samples of dressings, mayonnaise, or margarine were chromatographed on an anion exchange column, and interfering organic acids were eluted with water and 0.01N HCl. EDTA was eluted with 0.2N HCl and reacted with ferric chloride to form a stable EDTA--Fe complex. Electrophoresis was carried out with dilute HCl containing 0.05% Triton and beta-alanine (pH 3.5) as the leading electrolyte and 0.01M caproic acid as terminating electrolyte. Since uncoupled EDTA showed more than one zone, it was reacted with ferric chloride to form EDTA-Fe complex which showed only a single zone on an isotachopherogram. More than 90% of EDTA spiked at 100 or 1000 ppm level as disodium salt was recovered from the above mentioned three types of food. Detection limit was 10 ppm as disodium EDTA.

Nurse prescribing of wound-care dressings.

Wound assessment needs to be a structured process with suitable written tools to record findings. Nurse prescribing of wound-care dressings can lead to better continuity of wound care. Hospital expenditure need not rise if nurses prescribe wound-care products.

Bacterial contamination of skin used as a biological dressing. A potential hazard.

Bacterially contaminated skin used as a biological dressing on burn wounds can cause serious or even lethal infections, three examples of which are cited. Cadaver-skin allografts were frequently found to contain pathogenic bacteria. The frequency of infections due to the use of contaminated skin grafts on open wounds is unknown.

Wound dressings on the Drug Tariff.

Nurses in the community need to be aware of the range of dressings available. Hospital nurses also need this knowledge to inform discharge planning.

[Treatment of burn wounds and wounds healing with secondary tightening using dressings with aerosil].

The results of treatment of burn wounds and the wounds, healing with secondary closure, using the dressings containing the layer of aerosil a 2-3 mm thick, were studied. In principal group earlier than in control the decrease of wound intoxication occurred, alike the normalization of electrolyte balance, acid-base balance, and haemodynamics, improvement of patients' general condition, and the shortening of their stay in hospital was noted.

The role of cold compression dressings in the postoperative treatment of total knee arthroplasty.

A prospective randomized study was performed to evaluate the role of cold compressive dressings in the postoperative treatment of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Eighty consecutive unilateral and ten bilateral primary total knee replacements were evaluated in terms of blood loss, pain relief, and range of motion. Patients in the cold compression group demonstrated an average of 548 ml in suction drainage, whereas those in the control group averaged 807 ml. This resulted in an average 3.1 mg hemoglobin drop in the cold compression group and 4.7 mg in the control group. When body habitus and weight were taken into account in the cold compression group, an average total blood loss of 1298 cc was calculated, with 744 ml arising from soft tissue extravasation. The corresponding total blood loss calculated average was 1908 ml in the control group, with 1101 ml attributed to soft tissue extravasation. Total injectable morphine per kilogram per initial 48 hours averaged 0.53 mg in the cold compression patients and 0.69 mg in the control patients. In the cold compression knees, range of motion averaged 86 degrees before operation, 53 degrees on postoperative day (POD) 7, and 77 degrees on POD 14. In the control knees, range of motion averaged 88 degrees before operation, 44 degrees on POD 7, and 65 degrees on POD 14. The use of cold compression in the postoperative period of TKA results in a dramatic decrease in blood loss. In addition, mild improvements are seen in early return of motion and injectable narcotic pain needs in the postoperative period.

Primary closure of breast abscess compared with the conventional gauze packing and daily dressings.

Because of the reported success of primary closure of Skeletal Muscle abscess we conducted a retrospective study of breast abscess treated over a period of 24 months. There were essentially two groups: In one group the abscess cavities were initially packed with gauze and then dressed daily. In the second group, the abscess cavities were primarily closed and a negative suction drain instituted for about five to seven days. The second group had shorter healing period, better scar formation and reduction of cost in terms of labour and material. But a recurrence could occur within two to three days especially if the drain is removed prematurely.

Study on hydrophilic properties of gelatin as a clinical wound dressing. II. Water-absorbing property and hemostatic effect of gelatin.

For clinical use of gelatin as a dressing, we determined the water-absorbing capacity of gelatin for isotonic sodium chloride solution (ISCS) and bovine serum albumin-isotonic sodium chloride solution (BSA-ISCS). There was no significant difference between water absorption of gelatin with ISCS and with BSA-ISCS. The water-absorbing capacity of gelatin increased with increasing viscosity: gelatins No. 1 > No. 2 > No. 3. Enormous spaces of 20 to 30 microns or approximately 10 microns in size were observed on the gelatin surface. Scaly materials of 10 to 20 microns in size were also observed. The pores of 10 A in radius were predominant in all the gelatins studied. Since the sizes of cellular blood components range between 2 and 17 microns, they can enter the spaces but not the pores of 10 A in radius. On the other hand, water molecules, the major component of plasma, can enter the pores. Of theoretical sorption isotherms, Henderson's and Chung-Pfost's equations were fitted within the range of relative humidity between 1.5 and 75%. Gelatin No. 1 had the smallest constants n, K, B, and C followed by gelatins No. 2 and No. 3, suggesting that gelatin No. 1 is the most flexible for water and thus is fitted most easily to a raw area such as a wound or burn surface. The study of hemostatic effects of gelatin in rats demonstrated that when used at concentrations more than 50% of the bleeding amount, gelatin absorbed water from blood, and was stuck to and covered the wound surface.

Dressing in costume and the use of alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs by college students.

This study compared the behavior of college students who wore costumes on Halloween with those who did not. It was designed to examine the degree to which college students disguised their identity at Halloween, whether they masqueraded with a group, and whether these factors were related to alcohol and other drug use behaviors. The sample included 805 females and 448 males from two colleges. They were surveyed over a five-year period. The findings revealed significant associations between dressing in costume and drinking alcohol, and between masquerading with a group and using marijuana and other drugs. No significant associations were found between disguise of identity and the use of alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs.

The female genital dress-rehearsal: a prospective process at the oedipal threshold.

Rather than focus on the girl's phallic identification as a compensatory reaction to her femininity, I offer a conceptual framework through which to examine how the girl symbolically masters and elaborates her biologically unfolding sexuality. Presumably, because her genital inner space can be defined and filled only through the playful retention and expulsion of an external object, the girl's phallic identification paradoxically affords her the first experience of her genital femininity. Borne out of her genital stimulation at the oedipal threshold, the genital dress-rehearsal turns on outside gestures becoming registered as sensations inside her body. As a result of her dual experience, the girl is both phallic and vaginal, giver and receiver, father and mother. Through the magic of play, the girl renegotiates her oath of fidelity to her internal, pre-oedipal mother, while laying claim to the kind of sexual vibrancy that her external, oedipal mother shares with her oedipal father.

Hypertonic saline solution: an effective wound dressing solution.

In search of a cheaper and effective dressing solution for ulcers, 53 patients presenting with various types of ulcers at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital were treated with different strengths hypertonic saline 0.3, 0.9, 1.2, 1.5, 2 and 3 osmoles. The ages of the ulcers were between 3 months and 3 years. Optimal results were obtained with solution of 1.5 mmols and above. Desloughing occurred within 2 weeks and granulation was fast and good enough for skin grafting where necessary. Healing was faster in other ulcers that were not due for grafting.

The influence of dressings on the costs of wound treatment.

To calculate cost effectiveness of wound care, it is incorrect to calculate the costs of just a dressing. All aspects influencing the costs of treatment should be calculated. These include costs for the actual materials, labor, and nonmedical costs to society.
