[The concept of the parasitological typing of lakes].

The parasitological typology of lakes is proposed (with example of the Karelia-Kola limnological region). The characteristics of the main types of lakes with allowance of the parasitological data are given. The parasitological typology of lakes is based on studies of the parasite fauna diversity and differs from the trophical classification for lakes proposed by S. V. Gerd (1949).

Photochemical source of metals for sediments.

A mass budget study of major in-lake Al fluxes, palaeolimnological data on a >10,000 year old sediment record, and in situ photochemical experiments performed at Plesné Lake (Czech Republic) suggest that photochemical liberation of organically bound aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) by solar radiation is a significant natural source of their ionic species for lakes and subsequent oxyhydroxides for sediments. The results show that photochemically induced transformation of dissolved Al and Fe to solid oxyhydroxides deposited to Plesné Lake sediment dominated (91 and 73%, respectively) their sedimentary flux throughout the preindustrial era, since soil formation initiated in the catchment. The following sequence of processes occurs: (i) soil organic acids dissolve and bind metals and export them from terrestrial to aquatic systems. (ii) Photochemical decomposition of organic-metal complexes liberates a significant portion (approximately 50% in Pleseé Lake) of organically bound Al and Fe as inorganic ions. (iii) The liberated ionic Al and Fe hydrolyze, precipitate as oxyhydroxide particles, and settle. We hypothesise that the same Al and Fe transporting process occurs in other lakes and coastal marine areas and is ecologically important because Al and Fe oxyhydroxides can bind trace metals and phosphorus.

[Multianalysis between chlorophyll-a and environmental factors in Qiandao Lake water].

In this paper, the regression equation between chlorophyll-a (Chla) and some environmental factors was calculate by multiple stepwise regression, based on the monthly monitoring data in the Qiandao Lake from Jan. 1999 to Dec. 2000, and modified Carlson trophic state index for all the sampling sites was also analyzed. The results indicated that the spatial and temporal distribution of chlorophyll a in the sampling sites were varied strongly, the concentration of chlorophyll a in the Xin'an river changed from 50 mg.m-3 to 30 mg.m-3, but that in the lake was under 5 mg.m-3. The modified Carlson trophic state index (TSIM) for the sampling sites in southeast of the lake was under 37 (belonging to olligotrophic), and the others were under 53 (belonging to mesotrophic). In different sampling sites, the significant environmental affecting factors for chlorophyll a were different. However, the relationships between chlorophyll a and water temperature and total phosphorus were positive, and that between chlorophyll a and diaphaneity was negative.

The fall, recovery, orbit, and composition of the Tagish Lake meteorite: a new type of carbonaceous chondrite.

The preatmospheric mass of the Tagish Lake meteoroid was about 200,000 kilograms. Its calculated orbit indicates affinity to the Apollo asteroids with a semimajor axis in the middle of the asteroid belt, consistent with a linkage to low-albedo C, D, and P type asteroids. The mineralogy, oxygen isotope, and bulk chemical composition of recovered samples of the Tagish Lake meteorite are intermediate between CM and CI meteorites. These data suggest that the Tagish Lake meteorite may be one of the most primitive solar system materials yet studied.

Evolution of the ribosomal RNA internal transcribed spacer one (ITS-1) in cichlid fishes of the Lake Victoria region.

The nucleotide sequences of the first internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1) of the ribosomal RNA gene cluster have been determined for 11 species of closely related endemic cichlid fishes of the Lake Victoria region (LVR) and 6 related East African cichlids. The ITS-1 sequences confirmed independently derived basal phylogenies, but provide limited insight within this species flock. The line leading to Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor arose early, close to the divergence event that separated the tilapiine and haplochromine tribes of the "African Group" of the family Cichlidae. In this phylogeny, Astatoreochromis alluaudi and the riverine Astatotilapia burtoni are sister taxa, which together are a sister group to a monophyletic assemblage including both Lake Victoria and Lake Edward taxa. The ITS-1 data support the monophyly of haplochromine genera across lakes. Since Lake Victoria is believed to have been dry between 14, 500 and 12,400 BPE, the modern assemblage must have been derived from reinvasion by the products of earlier cladogenesis events. Thus, although the regional superflock is monophyletic, the haplochromines of Lake Victoria itself did not evolve in situ from a single ancestor.

Emerging vesiculo-type virus infections of freshwater fishes in Europe.

Rhabdoviruses were isolated from perch Perca fluviatilis and largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides exhibiting clinical signs of disease. Preliminary studies indicated that these viruses could be neutralised by antisera to perch rhabdovirus (Dorson et al. 1984) and may be similar to those previously isolated from grayling Thymallus thymallus and pike-perch Stizostedion stizostedion. The relationship between these viruses and the previously characterised fish rhabdoviruses, pike fry rhabdovirus (PFRV), spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV) and lake trout rhabdovirus, was investigated. Viruses were propagated in bluegill fry (BF-2) cells and were characterised using electron microscopy, serum neutralisation tests, immunofluorescence tests, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and nucleotide sequence analysis. The bullet-shaped viral particles appeared to be compact, with spikes visible at the surface, a morphology similar to that of the vesiculovirus group of rhabdoviruses. Serum neutralisation tests showed that the viruses were antigenically closely related to the previously characterised perch rhabdovirus, but were not significantly neutralised by antisera to PFRV, SVCV or viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV). In immunofluorescence tests with perch rhabdovirus antisera, strong specific fluorescence was observed in cell cultures infected with the new rhabdovirus isolates, but no fluorescence was observed with antisera to PFRV, SVCV or VHSV. SDS-PAGE analysis revealed a polypeptide profile typical of vesiculoviruses, but the novel virus isolates had different relative mobilities of their P and M proteins compared to PFRV and SVCV. Nucleotide sequence analysis was carried out using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and DNA sequencing of a 439 base-pair region of the viral L gene. The novel rhabdovirus isolates had <76% nucleotide sequence identity to PFRV, SVCV and lake trout rhabdovirus and >95% identity to perch rhabdovirus. Phylogenetic analysis using both maximum parsimony and neighbour-joining methods assigned the perch rhaboviruses to a separate group to that of PFRV, SVCV and lake trout rhabdovirus. These data are the initial characterisation of a group of emerging fish vesiculo-type viruses that are biochemically and genetically distinct from the PFRV, SVCV and lake trout rhabdoviruses.

Measuring water storage fluctuations in lake Dongting, China, by Topex/Poseidon satellite altimetry.

Although satellite radar altimetry was developed and optimized for open oceans, it has been used to monitor variations in the level of inland water-bodies such as lakes and rivers. Here, for the first time, we have further used the altimetry-derived variation of water level for estimating the fluctuation of water storage as an addition to the present in situ water storage estimation systems to be used in remote areas and in emergency situation such as in the events flooding monitoring and for studying the effect of climate change. Lake Dongting, the second largest lake in China, influenced frequently by flooding, was, therefore, chosen to demonstrate the potential of the technique. By using the concept of an "assumed reference point", we converted Topex/Poseidon satellite altimetry data on water level variations in Lake Dongting to "water level" data. The "water level" time-series data and in situ water storage were used to establish a rating curve. From the rating curve, we converted data on "water level" derived from seven years (1993-1999) of Topex/Poseidon data to actual water storage in Lake Dongting. The result reveals that the seasonal and annual fluctuations of water storage occurred during the 1990s with a more frequent flooding at the late 1990s' especially the flooding in whole catchment level in 1998 and 1999. The study supports the usefulness of satellite altimetry for dense and continuous monitoring of the temporal variations in water dynamic in moderate to large lakes.

Effect of trauma system maturation on mortality rates in patients with blunt injuries in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.

BACKGROUND: New York State instituted a statewide trauma system beginning in 1990. By 1993, that system included uniform emergency medical system triage guidelines, designated trauma centers, transfer agreements between trauma centers and noncenters, and a trauma registry containing data on seriously injured patients in each region and the state as a whole. We reviewed the first 4 years of registry data for the Finger Lakes Region to determine what effects the institution of a trauma system has had on the outcome of trauma care in this region. DESIGN: Retrospective review of a regional trauma database. METHODS: All qualifying injured patients in the region were entered into the registry beginning in 1993. Data from 1993 through 1996 for patients with blunt injuries were analyzed by both Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) methodology and logistic regression analysis. For comparison, two time periods were defined: 1993-1994 and 1995-1996. Outcomes for the two time periods were stratified by Revised Trauma Score and the presence or absence of head and/or cervical spine injury, and then compared by hospital type (regional trauma center, area trauma center, and noncenters). RESULTS: In the later time period, there was a statistically significant decrease in the region-wide mortality rate. This was associated with a marked improvement in performance of the noncenters and with an increase in the proportion of patients who received definitive care at a trauma center. CONCLUSIONS: Improved outcomes for patients with blunt trauma can occur early in the implementation of a trauma system. This improvement may be attributable in part to changes in field triage and early transport to trauma centers.

Plasma steroid concentrations in relation to size and age in juvenile alligators from two Florida lakes.

Previous studies have reported a number of physiological differences among juvenile alligators from two well-studied populations (Lake Apopka and Lake Woodruff) in north central Florida. These studies obtained alligators of similar size from each lake under the assumption that the animals were of similar age. Lake Apopka is a hypertrophic lake with a 50-year history of contamination from agricultural and municipal operations, whereas Lake Woodruff is a eutrophic lake and part of a National Wildlife Refuge that receives little point source pollution. If growth rates differ among these areas, it could be argued that differences in endocrine parameters reported previously (e.g. steroid or thyroid hormone concentrations) could be the result of differences in the animals' ages. Using growth annuli in cross-sections of femurs, we estimated the ages of juvenile alligators and compared the relationship of estradiol-17beta (E(2)) and testosterone (T) to size and age within each lake and sex. No differences were detected in the relationship between size and age between the two areas indicating similar growth rates between lakes. Plasma E(2) was positively related to size in females from Lake Apopka, and age in Woodruff females. Males from Lake Apopka had elevated plasma E(2) compared with Lake Woodruff males and did not differ from Woodruff females. No significant relationships were detected for T from either lake, and no differences in plasma T were detected among lakes or sexes. Our data indicate that both size and age can have a significant relationship with steroid concentrations. However, the relationship between steroid concentrations and size or age differed between lakes. We suggest both factors should be considered when conducting physiological studies where there is evidence to suggest growth rates may differ among populations.

The Great Lakes Information Network: the region's Internet information service.

Communication is the cornerstone of ecosystem protection and sustainable development efforts in the binational Great Lakes region of North America. Great Lakes environmental protection, remediation, and pollution prevention efforts bring together individuals from across the public sector, business and industry, citizens groups, and academia. The region is now working to enhance communications between these groups and the rest of the world, through the Internet-based Great Lakes Information Network (GLIN). Diverse regional data, information, and human resources located at key agencies and organizations are accessible via GLIN. These online resources span environmental quality, human health effects and other research, resource management, transportation, demographic, and economic data, as well as other resources in the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada. Federal, state, provincial, and regional agencies and a range of citizen, business, and research organizations are cooperating with the lead agency, the Great Lakes Commission, in developing GLIN into the region's shared Internet resource. GLIN resources are accessible to users of ubiquitous Internet research tools including World Wide Web and Gopher. Statistical information on usage and the region's response to ongoing efforts to build the GLIN system and solicit contributions of data and information indicate that we can continue to build GLIN into a truly regional resource which enhances communication among researchers, policy makers, students, and the general public.

Assessing temporal trends in contaminants from long-term avian monitoring programs: the influence of sampling frequency.

The effect of sampling frequency on the detection of statistically significant temporal trends in egg contaminant levels was examined using data from the Great Lakes Herring Gull Monitoring Program. Decreased identification of statistically significant trends was apparent in the sampling regimes where samples were collected less frequently. When statistically significant declines were observed, sampling at two and four year intervals resulted in the trend being identified later than with annual monitoring. The design of monitoring programs must balance costs and data quality. Programs should ensure that the data collected are adequate to address critical questions.

[The classification and the monitoring of the state of mouth riverine and lacustrine ecosystems in lake Baikal based on the composition of local microbiocenoses and their activity].

The paper presents the results of the long-term investigation of microbial communities in the technogenically vulnerable mouth riverine and lacustrine ecosystems of Lake Baikal. The structural and functional parameters of the microbial communities were analyzed from the standpoint of developing destructive processes. The analysis showed that the total number of microorganisms (TNM), the number of saprophytic bacteria (NSB), and bacterial production (BP) were greater in the river-mouth water than in the near-mouth lake water. In the offshore direction, TNM and NSB decreased by a factor of 1.5 to 2, and BP decreased by a factor of 4 to 7. Based on TNM, NSB, and BP data, we classified the Lake Baikal rivers with respect to the degree of the impact of human activities on them. The degrading capability of the riverine microbial communities was found to be such that they degrade daily from tenths of a percent to 3.5% of the total amount of organic compounds polluted the river waters.

Genetic and morphological data supporting the hypothesis of adaptive radiation in the endemic fish of Lake Matano.

Adaptive radiation resulting from differential selection acting on functional features is believed to be an important source of biodiversity. In this study, morphometric measures and mitochondrial DNA are used to test for adaptive radiation within four fish genera (Glossogobius, Oryzias, Dermogenys and Telmatherina) endemic to an ancient island lake (Lake Matano, Sulawesi, Indonesia), using the framework proposed by Schluter (The Ecology of Adaptive Radiation, Oxford University Press, 2000). We demonstrate common ancestry and rapid divergence in one genus (Telmatherina) based on 560 bp of 16S sequence data. We found higher levels of variation in feeding-related traits (N = 8) for Telmatherina relative to the other genera, while no differences were found for sexual display traits (N = 8) or neutral morphological traits (N = 8). Telmatherina also had the highest number of distinct colouration patterns among the four genera. These data, combined with the very low productivity of the lake, are indicative of selection driving adaptive radiation. The morphometric divergence in the Telmatherina likely results from selection acting on feeding traits in this low productivity lake, leading to trophic specialization among closely related morphotypes. These results provide indirect but compelling data supporting the adaptive radiation of Telmatherina in this system.

Sensitivity of an oligotrophic lake planktonic bacterial community to oxygen stress.

Dissolved oxygen at approximately four times normal saturation (42 mg liter) inhibited the growth and metabolism of summer planktonic bacteria in the surface water of alpine oligotrophic Mountain Lake (Giles County, Va.). Data were derived from growth of CFU on membrane filters, d-[U-C]glucose incorporation into the extractable lipid of these CFU, and respiration and assimilation of d-[U-C]glucose by lake water samples. Statistically significant (alpha < 0.05) differences were not detected in either CFU or C incorporation in lipid when superoxide dismutase (30 U ml) or catalase (130 U ml) was added to the medium. Thus, exogenous oxygen by-products apparently are not responsible for the observed inhibition of growth and metabolism.

Evaluation of optically acquired zooplankton size-spectrum data as a potential tool for assessment of condition in the Great Lakes.

An optical plankton counter (OPC) potentially provides an assessment tool for zooplankton condition in ecosystems that is rapid, economical, and spatially extensive. We collected zooplankton data with an OPC in 20 near-shore regions of 4 of the Laurentian Great Lakes. The zooplankton size information was used to compute mean size, biomass density, and size-spectra parameters for each location. The resulting metrics were analyzed for their ability to discriminate among the Great Lakes. Biomass density provided discrimination among lakes, as did several parameters describing spectra shape and distribution. A proposed zooplankton indicator, mean size (determined with OPC measurements in this study), was found to provide discrimination among lakes. Size-spectra-related parameters added increased ability to discriminate in conjunction with the biomass density (or mean size) metric. A discriminant function analysis of the multiple metrics (mean size, biomass density, and distribution parameters) suggests that a multi metric size-based approach might be used to classify communities among lakes improving a mean-size metric. The feasibility OPCs and size-based metrics for zooplankton assessment was found to have potential for further development as assessment tools for the biological condition of zooplankton communities in the Great Lakes.

Seasonal phytoplanktonic diversity of Kitham lake, Agra.

Two years (Jan. 2000 - Dec. 2001) data on the seasonal studies of phytoplanktonic diversity of Kitham lake (Sur Sarovar) Agra revealed the presence of 73 algal species. A limited number of these were recorded throughout the year, while others were distributed in different seasons mainly in winter and summer seasons. During winters, Chlorophyceae was the most dominant group followed by Bacillariophyceae. On the other hand, Cyanophyceae and Euglenophyceae were the most dominant during summers. Certain species e.g. Pandorina morum, Pediastrum tetras, Gonium sp., Chlorella vulgaris, Scendesmus quadricauda, Oedogonium cardiocum, Synedra ulna, Oscillatoria agardhii and Euglena gracillis were recorded throughout the year. Chlorella, Stigeoclonium, Pandorina, Micratinium, Oscillatoria, Anacystis, Nitzschia and Cymbella were found to be good indicators of water pollution.

Development of a new biotic index to assess freshwater pollution.

We developed a new biotic index of species pollution value (SPV) and community pollution value (CPV) based on the correlation of protozoan communities with chemical water quality to assess freshwater pollution. Five hundred and twenty-three species of protozoa SPV were established based on the data of River Hangjiang and Lake Donghu. The present research was conducted in order to further consummate the biotic index. Protozoa of the water system in Changde City were collected from 16 stations using the PFU method and the water chemical parameters of the stations were analyzed. The results showed that CPV calculated from SPV had a close correlation with the degree of water pollution (p < 0.00001), which indicated that the method is reliable. By combining the data of River Hangjiang, Lake Donghu and Changde City, the final form of SPV was accomplished and the SPV list increased to 757. The ultimate water standard evaluated by CPV calculated from SPV was proposed.
