Influence of ovarian maturity, age, and mating status on the antennal responses of wild and laboratory reared Xyleborus affinis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) to ethanol.

Xyleborus affinis Eichthoff is a neotropical ambrosia beetle that, in certain regions such as the United States and Mexico, has been associated with exotic phytopathogenic fungi causing extensive tree mortality. Although studies relating its olfactory response to volatile compounds and trapping systems have been published, factors such as the insect's physiological condition, which can affect its recognition or response to odors, have not been studied. Here, we evaluated the electroantennographic (EAG) response of wild and laboratory reared X. affinis females to 70% ethanol, a compound known to attract these insects. The experimental design was developed to consider and compare the following conditions: (i) females collected inside and outside host-galleries, (ii) sexual maturity (with mature and immature ovaries), (iii) age (0, 1, 3, and 5 d after emergence), and (iv) mating status (virgins and mated). Our results indicate that most of the wild females located outside the galleries were sexually mature but exhibited significantly lower EAG response than those inside the galleries. Regarding mating status, mated females exhibited significantly stronger antennal responses compared to virgins, whereas age did not affect antennal sensitivity. Finally, we provide images of the hitherto undescribed reproductive system of X. affinis females, a key element that enabled this investigation. The information generated offers a useful foundation for future studies aimed at understanding the physiological mechanisms and other critical factors related to sensory perception and reproductive condition. For example, factors that may influence the behavior and attraction of X. affinis females to host semiochemicals.

External load metrics and monitoring in women's football match play: A systematic review.

This systematic review aimed to identify the most commonly used variables for monitoring external load during elite women's football matches and to compare reporting practices internationally and in Brazil. Searches were conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, and SciELO using the PICOS framework between February and March 2026, resulting in the inclusion of 35 studies. The main outcomes analysed were total distance covered (TD), distance covered across speed zones (HSR, VHSR, sprint), number of accelerations and decelerations, and maximum speed. TD and distance covered across speed zones were the most frequently reported indicators (94.3%), followed by HSR (82.8%) and sprint distance (68.5%). Considerable variability was observed in the classification of speed zones and thresholds used to define accelerations and decelerations, limiting comparisons between studies. External load values varied according to playing position and competition level, with international matches generally imposing greater demands than national competitions. Brazilian research remains limited and demonstrates notable methodological variability. This review proposes standardised speed and acceleration/deceleration thresholds based on the most recurrent ranges reported in the literature, supporting improved consistency in monitoring practices across elite women's football contexts.

Diet and sleep among college student populations: a systematic review.

College students are at-risk for both poor diet and poor sleep. We aimed to systematically review the evidence regarding associations between diet and sleep health within this population. A comprehensive electronic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and PsycINFO from the earliest possible date through February 6, 2026. A total of 57 studies representing 44 countries were retained; most were cross-sectional. There were 22 studies that examined dietary patterns in relation to sleep, generally showing that healthier diet patterns, including the Mediterranean Diet, were related to better sleep quality. Among 20 studies that examined individual foods or nutrients, there was evidence that fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein, and lower intake of sugar-sweetened beverages were linked to better sleep health, although some findings were mixed. Finally, 15 studies related meal timing to sleep quality, showing that breakfast skipping and later last meals were associated with poor sleep health. Overall, these studies reveal robust cross-sectional associations between diet and sleep among college students, but more longitudinal studies and randomized controlled trials are needed to evaluate directionality. Moreover, a key direction for future study is consideration of sleep and nutrition situated within the unique contexts of college settings and academic schedules.

Understanding specificity in immune-brain pathways: A systematic review of differential associations between individual cytokines and brain structure and function measured through magnetic resonance imaging in humans.

Research shows that cytokines are associated with psychiatric disorders, including major depression, and multiple aspects of brain structure and function. Accumulating data suggest that different cytokines may have unique profiles of biological activity, particularly in their neuromodulatory roles, but it is currently unclear whether they have unique associations with specific neural circuits in humans. In this paper, we systematically review magnetic resonance imaging studies conducted with depressed or healthy control human participants under age 65 that examine associations between peripheral cytokines and brain structure and function, with the goal of evaluating evidence for the specificity of these cytokine-brain associations. We find that across multiple measures of brain structure and function, the majority of studies reviewed reported unique associations between individual cytokines and brain outcomes. A synthesis of findings across studies also suggests a preliminary hypothesis of specific associations of interleukin-6 levels in circulation with the default mode network and tumor necrosis factor-alpha with the salience network, which could be tested in future research. We conclude the review with future directions for research that can strengthen understanding of these associations.

Rationale, design, and experiences from the vanguard phase of the bariatric surgery for the reduction of cardiovascular events (BRAVE) trial.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies suggest that metabolic/bariatric surgery (MBS) reduces mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with obesity, but adequately powered randomized trials (RCTs) are lacking. The Bariatric Surgery for the Reduction of Cardiovascular Events (BRAVE) trial was designed to address this evidence gap. METHODS: BRAVE is an investigator-initiated, multi-center, open-label RCT with blinded endpoint adjudication comparing MBS vs guideline-based medical weight management (MWM) in adults with obesity and high-risk cardiovascular disease (CVD). Eligible participants have a body-mass index ≥35 kg/m² or ≥30 kg/m² with type 2 diabetes or age >55 years, and prior myocardial infarction (MI), coronary intervention, heart failure (HF), atrial fibrillation (AF) with elevated CHA₂DS₂-VASc score, cerebrovascular disease, or peripheral arterial disease. Participants are randomized 1:1 to MBS (sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, or duodenal switch) or MWM, which includes dietary, behavioral, and pharmacologic therapies. The primary outcome is the composite of all-cause death, MI, stroke, HF events, coronary revascularization, AF hospitalization, and renal events. A vanguard phase of 200 participants was implemented to optimize recruitment and logistics. RESULTS: As of October 2025, 2,514 individuals have been screened from 17 centers in Canada, Brazil, Italy and Spain, with 444 entered MBS work-up, and 200 have been randomized. The randomized cohort (mean age 59.8 years; 37% female; mean BMI 44.0 kg m⁻²) has high burden of hypertension (82%), diabetes (45%), coronary artery disease (44%), HF (39%), and AF (48%). Recruitment barriers were identified and addressed through targeted education and enhanced patient engagement. CONCLUSIONS: BRAVE is the first large RCT evaluating whether MBS safely reduces major cardiovascular events compared with medical therapy in high-risk patients with obesity. How to assess different types of abstract concepts in brain disorders: A systematic review.

The clinical evaluation of semantic knowledge has predominantly relied on tools targeting concrete concepts, whereas abstract knowledge has historically received limited attention despite its importance in everyday communication. Only a few instruments have explored the internal subdivision of abstract knowledge, likely due to the intrinsic difficulty of defining specific types of concepts or dimensions, resulting in a fragmented and heterogeneous neuropsychological assessment framework that limits our understanding of this domain. This systematic review examined the tools used to assess various types of abstract concepts in clinical populations. A literature search has been performed on the electronic databases of PubMed and Google Scholar (last update: October 2025). A total of 17 tests is reviewed, differing in the test characteristics, i.e. ranging from automatic to controlled processes and varying in ecological validity, the type of stimuli employed, and the abstract dimensions explored. Most studies have focused on neurodegenerative patients, while comparatively few have examined other clinical conditions. The risk of bias of the reviewed studies was assessed using an ad hoc developed instrument. This review highlights the need for future research to extend investigations to additional abstract domains and clinical populations, while also identifying key challenges related to stimulus selection and the determination of the most appropriate assessment framework.

Cost-effectiveness analysis of a virtually administered pain coping skills training intervention in women with breast cancer in underserved areas.

OBJECTIVES: Women with cancer who live in medically underserved areas could benefit from behavioral pain interventions, but access is limited. A randomized trial reported that a 4-session virtual program incorporating pain coping skills training (mPCST) was effective in improving pain outcomes compared to an attention-control condition. We performed a cost-effectiveness analysis of mPCST vs. control. METHODS: Data on medical resource use, therapist time, and participants' attendance at intervention sessions and time associated with travel and using a mobile app were collected. The 5-level EuroQol 5-Dimension (EQ-5D-5L), a preference-weighted measure of health-related quality of life (HRQOL), was administered at baseline, after the intervention period, and 3 and 6 months later. Medicare payments were used to value medical resource use and therapist time to deliver mPCST. Patient time was valued using the average US wage. RESULTS: Medical resource utilization was similar for both groups, but hospitalizations trended higher in the mPCST group. EQ-5D-5L preference weights were higher by an average of 0.066 (p = 0.04) with mPCST across the follow-up period, representing an incremental gain of 0.04 quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) (95% CI: 0.00-0.08). When including the base-case cost of mPCST of \$500 vs. \$0 for the control group, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was \$12,725 per QALY (95% CI: 5,566-69,343). Including the value of patient time added \$303 to mPCST costs resulting in an ICER of \$20,438 per QALY (95% CI: 9,051-111,403). SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS: mPCST is a cost-effective program that improves HRQOL for women with cancer living in medically underserved areas.

The psychosocial supports and interventions accessed by family members of patients with developmental and epileptic encephalopathies: A systematic review.

AIM: Family members of patients with developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) face profound emotional, social and practical challenges, yet little is known about how they access psychosocial support. We synthesised the literature on the psychosocial support accessed by family members of patients with DEEs, including evidence-based interventions. METHOD: Four databases were searched. Two reviewers independently screened and extracted data, appraised study quality (QualSyst Tool), and determined certainty of evidence (GRADE-CERQual Framework). Data were synthesised using inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: 28 papers comprising 27 unique studies were included and methodological quality was high overall (median = 0.91, IQR = 0.85-1.00). Most studies focused on parent experiences; only two included siblings' perspectives. Families reported high psychological needs which were rarely met by psychological support. Clinicians rarely provided adequate information, quality communication or addressed mental health. Families valued respite care, but experienced barriers to access. Peer support was the most common and valued resource. Three studies tested interventions and appeared feasible and acceptable for parents. However, evidence for intervention effectiveness is preliminary and limited to small, uncontrolled pilot studies. INTERPRETATION: Gaps exist in psychosocial support provision for families of patients with DEEs, including insufficient research on siblings' and grandparents' needs, and lack of evidence-based interventions. We propose evidence-informed research and implementation strategies to address these gaps.

Sleep stage-dependent distribution of interictal epileptiform discharges in epilepsy: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Sleep and epilepsy interact through complex bidirectional mechanisms. Although NREM sleep facilitates interictal epileptiform discharges (IED), the diagnostic contribution of individual sleep stages remains uncertain. In particular, it is unclear whether deeper sleep stages such as N3 provide an advantage over N2 for spike detection or localization in clinical (electroencephalography) EEG practice. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed and Web of Science were searched for studies reporting quantitative IED measures across sleep stages in patients with epilepsy. Eligible studies included scalp EEG, video-EEG, polysomnography, or intracranial recordings. Mean IED rates per minute were derived when possible. Comparisons between NREM and REM sleep and between N2 and N3 stages were performed using study level non-parametric tests. Risk of bias was assessed with the ROBINS-I tool. RESULTS: Ten observational studies including 266 patients (mean age 30.1 years) were analyzed. IED rates were significantly higher during NREM than REM sleep (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, W = 0, p = 0.0019, r = 0.87). No significant difference was observed between N2 and N3 sleep, although median spike rates were slightly higher during N3 than N2 (0.99 vs 0.86 IED/min). REM showed the lowest activity. CONCLUSIONS: NREM sleep consistently exhibited higher IED rates than REM sleep, reinforcing the neurophysiological association between sleep stage and epileptiform activity without establishing diagnostic superiority.

Complement component C4 and neuroimaging in psychiatry: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic studies suggest that the complement system contributes to the pathophysiology of various psychiatric disorders partly through neurodevelopmental effects linked to C4A protein levels variations. We conducted a systematic review to characterize how brain micro- and macrostructure and connectivity vary with proxies of in vivo brain C4A protein levels in both psychiatric and general-population cohorts. METHODS: We used Medline, Web of Science, and Embase, and included all studies published before April 14, 2025. Inclusion criteria were: (1) inclusion of healthy controls and/or individuals with psychiatric disorders assessed according to recognized diagnostic manuals (DSM or ICD); (2) use of MRI-based neuroimaging; and (3) use of genomic, transcriptomic and/or proteomic approaches as proxies of in vivo brain C4A proteins levels. RESULTS: From 317 identified articles, 11 were included. Associations between C4A levels and brain structure were heterogeneous across regions. Only the mOFC, dlPFC, and entorhinal cortex were implicated in more than one study. Findings for the mOFC and dlPFC varied by the type of metrics and clinical status, whereas higher C4A levels were more consistently associated with smaller entorhinal cortex surface area and cortical thickness in pediatric, middle-aged, and older general-population cohorts. In addition, one study found higher genetically predicted C4A expression to be associated with higher TSPO levels. CONCLUSION: The limited number of available studies and their methodological heterogeneity make synthesis challenging. However, biological hypotheses such as excessive synaptic pruning or broader inflammatory effects on the brain may provide plausible explanatory frameworks for the reported associations.

Frequent readmissions after hospitalization for alcohol withdrawal: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder and alcohol withdrawal syndrome impose substantial clinical and economic burdens, with repeated hospitalizations being common. We aimed to systematically review readmission rates following inpatient detoxification, assess variation across study designs and hospital settings, and identify key risk and protective factors. METHODS: We performed a literature search in Embase and Pubmed on 10/04/2026 focusing on studies assessing in hospital alcohol detoxification. Exclusion criteria included studies on substance use other than alcohol and outpatient or residential treatment. Main outcome was rehospitalization, and meta-analysis was performed to estimate pooled readmission proportions. Secondary outcomes were risk factors and protective factors influencing the rate of rehospitalization. RESULTS: Twenty-five studies were included. The pooled proportion of readmissions following alcohol detoxification was estimated at 17% (95% CI: 14%-21%; 13 studies, n = 287,896) within 1 month, increasing to 44% (95% CI: 36%-52%; 8 studies, n = 2,877) at 1 year. Substantial between-study heterogeneity was observed. Subgroup analyses found no significant differences by hospital setting or time period. Findings for study aim and study design were mixed and based on limited data A small number of studies suggested associations with housing stability, employment, and treatment engagement. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis suggests that approximately one in six patients are readmitted within 1 month and nearly half within 1 year after inpatient alcohol detoxification. However, readmission rates varied considerably across settings and populations. Future research should evaluate targeted interventions to reduce readmissions among high-risk patient groups.

Sex- and development-specific transcriptomic profiling of venom and silk genes in the wolf spider Pardosa astrigera provides insights into ecological adaptation and predatory strategies.

Spider venom and silk glands are two major secretory systems that contribute to prey capture, defense, and reproduction, but their sex- and development-specific molecular regulation in wandering wolf spiders remains poorly understood. Here, the transcriptome of Pardosa astrigera, an important agricultural natural enemy in China, revealed significant sex- and development-associated molecular differentiation among adult females, adult males, and spiderlings. A total of 100,025 unigenes were obtained, of which 23,852 were functionally annotated, providing a comprehensive transcriptomic resource for this species. Differential expression patterns showed marked variation among groups, with 531, 1792, and 832 DEGs detected in PAF vs PAS, PAM vs PAS, and PAF vs PAM, respectively. These genes were mainly associated with metabolic, oxidation-reduction, cuticle development, MAPK signaling, and lysosome pathways. Fifteen co-expression modules revealed distinct expression patterns. The turquoise, pink, yellow, and red modules were development-related, whereas the blue module was male-biased. Venom- and spidroin-related genes were distributed across multiple modules, suggesting coordinated regulation. Overall, 42 venom peptides, 21 venom proteins, and 11 spidroins were identified. Representative genes showed strongly biased expression, including spiderling-biased U3_Pp1a and U5_Pp1e, female-biased U4_Pp1a, and male-biased SMase D_108750 and PaTuSp_108466. These findings reveal sex- and development-biased expression patterns of venom- and silk-related candidate genes in P. astrigera and may provide molecular insights into ecological adaptation and predatory strategies in wandering wolf spiders.

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) of polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) dental implants: A systematic review of the effect of printing parameters on mechanical behaviour and surface quality.

PURPOSE: This systematic review evaluated how FDM printing parameters influence mechanical behaviour and surface characteristics of 3D-printed PEEK and identified parameter combinations linked to the most favourable mechanical performance and surface quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An electronic search was conducted in: MEDLINE (Ovid), PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Compendex (last update: January 2025). Studies that evaluated the effect of FDM printing parameters on mechanical and surface properties of PEEK were included. Outcomes comprised compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths, elastic modulus, fracture toughness, surface hardness, roughness, and wettability. RESULTS: Of 4005 reports screened, 54 manuscripts were included. 92.6% (n = 50) of articles showed low risk-of-bias, while 7.4% (n = 4) showed medium risk-of-bias. Tensile strength was the most investigated mechanical parameter (78%), followed by elastic modulus (41%), flexural strength (30%), compressive strength (20%), and fracture toughness (6%). Surface roughness was the most evaluated surface property (30%), followed by hardness (17%) and wettability (6%). Across studies, higher printing temperatures, lower printing speed, thinner layer thickness, and maximum infill ratio in a horizontal printing orientation were associated with higher strengths, less warpage, increased accuracy, and improved surface quality. CONCLUSION: Specific combinations of FDM printing parameters can significantly improve the mechanical and surface properties of PEEK. However, it is difficult to meet all the optimal conditions simultaneously. Thus, balancing between different parameters must be considered in practical production.

Self-selected goals outperform assigned goals in reducing mobile phone usage: Evidence from a randomized controlled trial.

Excessive smartphone use is increasingly recognized as a public-health concern, yet scalable approaches to help individuals regulate daily use remain limited. We examine whether allowing individuals to self-select reduction goals improves behavioral and psychological outcomes when incentives and average goal levels are held constant across conditions. In a twelve-week randomized controlled trial, (N = 149; over 9000 person-day observations), participants were assigned to (i) a self-selected condition (choosing a 10%, 20%, or 30% reduction in daily phone use), (ii) an assigned condition (assigned a 14% reduction goal), or (iii) a no-goal control condition. Participants who selected their own goals reduced phone use by 26 min more per day (73% larger reduction) and achieved their goals 11 percentage points more often than those assigned goals, despite identical incentives and average goal levels. Reductions in phone use and higher goal achievement were associated with improvements in perceived addiction, depressive, and anxiety symptoms. These psychological outcomes were secondary endpoints. Although the between-group estimates generally followed the same directional pattern as the behavioral outcomes, the sample size for these analyses was limited and the between-group differences were not statistically significant. These findings should therefore be interpreted with caution. Overall, the results provide causal field evidence that self-selection under this goal-setting design can improve behavioral outcomes. Allowing individuals to choose their own goals may strengthen engagement and support healthier digital behavior. Incorporating opportunities for goal-selection may represent a simple addition to digital-health and public-health interventions aimed at helping individuals moderate smartphone use and improve well-being.

Transformation of antibiotics mediated by iron-bearing minerals: A review.

Iron-bearing minerals are ubiquitous in water, sediments and soil, where their surface chemical properties and redox activity can play an important role in degradation of trace antibiotics. This review systematically summarizes the roles of various iron-bearing minerals in chemical transformation and microbial degradation of antibiotics and reaction mechanisms involved, and refines the critical idea for iron-driven control of antibiotics with trace level in natural environment. Overall, antibiotics removal in the presence of iron-bearing minerals involves combination of adsorption, surface oxidative degradation, photo-induced degradation, Fenton-like reaction and microbial degradation. Adsorption of antibiotics by Fe(III)-minerals involves electrostatic interaction, complexation, H-bonding, π-π interaction and hydrophobic interaction. Adsorbed antibiotics form complexes with Fe(III)-minerals, undergoing electron transfer to generate radical intermediates, subsequently generating final products through hydroxylation, dealkylation, and deamination. Additionally, Fe(III)-minerals can be excited to produce electrons and holes under sunlight and to produce antibiotics-degrading hydroxyl radical through O2 reduction, H2O oxidation and ligand-to-metal charge transfer. Reduced iron minerals can activate oxygen to participate in Fenton-like degradation reactions. Finally, antibiotics are mainly removed by bio-driven Fenton reaction and direct enzyme biodegradation. The presence of iron-bearing minerals can promote antibiotics microbial degradation by providing nutrients for microorganisms or by changing microbial activity and microbial community structure. Existing problems and future research directions are identified. New insights for application of iron-bearing minerals in transformation of antibiotics are proposed. The work aims to suggest new methods and insights for pollution control and remediation of emerging contaminants including trace antibiotics in the natural environment.

Brain network alterations underlying cue reactivity and craving in abstinent methamphetamine users: a systematic review of functional MRI findings.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) is marked by intense craving and high relapse risk, often triggered by drug-related cues. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provides key insight into the neural basis of this cue reactivity, implicating large-scale brain networks for reward, motivation, and control. Yet, findings remain inconsistent across studies due to differences in task design, abstinence duration, and participant characteristics. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review synthesises evidence on how abstinence influences brain network alterations underlying cue reactivity and craving in methamphetamine users, integrating task-based and resting-state fMRI findings within leading neurobiological models of addiction. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Ovid was conducted up to August 10, 2025, following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Eligible fMRI studies examined cue reactivity or craving in abstinent methamphetamine users. Data were extracted on activation, connectivity, and brain-behaviour associations, and synthesised narratively. RESULTS: Task-based studies revealed heightened activation across reward, salience, and control networks during cue exposure, which diminished as parietal and executive control systems re-engaged with longer abstinence. Resting-state findings showed disrupted intrinsic connectivity among default mode, salience, and frontoparietal networks, reflecting persistent imbalances linked to craving and use severity. CONCLUSION: fMRI evidence shows that MUD is marked by network-level disruption linking reward, salience, and control systems. Task-based findings reveal strong cue reactivity in reward circuits, while resting-state data show persistent imbalance among default mode and control networks. With abstinence, partial restoration of network integrity emerges, highlighting both vulnerability and opportunities for targeted, recovery-based interventions.

Infant Dietary Patterns and Early Childhood Weight Outcomes: A Secondary Analysis from the Starting Early Program Trial.

BACKGROUND: The Starting Early Program (StEP) promotes healthy nutrition during early life and leads to healthier child weight, but whether dietary patterns contribute to weight or mediate StEP weight outcomes has not been studied. OBJECTIVES: This secondary analysis identified infant dietary patterns in StEP, determined associations between dietary patterns and child weight outcomes, and examined whether dietary patterns mediated the relationship between StEP and child weight. METHODS: Data were from 377 mother-infant dyads in a randomized trial testing the efficacy of StEP. Dietary patterns at 10 months were identified using latent class analysis. Child weights were abstracted from medical records at 12, 24, and 36 months. Associations between infant dietary patterns and weight-for-age z-score (WFAz) and likelihood of being classified as overweight (WFA ≥85th percentile) were assessed using linear and logistic multivariable regression models. Mediation was used to assess intervention effects on WFAz via impacts on infant dietary patterns. RESULTS: Four classes of infant dietary patterns were identified: Breastfed-High variety, Formula fed-High variety, Formula fed-Low variety, and Mixed fed-Low variety. Compared to the Breastfed-High variety class, infants in the Formula fed-Low variety class had higher WFAz and were more likely to be classified as overweight at 24 and 36 months. Participation in StEP increased membership in Breastfed-High variety, which mediated the association between StEP and lower WFAz at 24 months. CONCLUSIONS: Infant dietary patterns were identified, and some were associated with child overweight. StEP was associated with a dietary pattern most consistent with guidelines, which mediated intervention effects on child weight.

Eating Experiences During Cancer Treatment in Adolescents and Young Adults: A Systematic Literature Review and Meta-Synthesis.

Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 15-39 with cancer face distinct challenges during treatment, with eating consistently emerging as one of the most distressing and underrecognized concerns. At a critical life stage, AYAs must navigate illness-related consequences that profoundly affect well-being. Eating reflects these broader challenges and is identified as a key issue requiring health care attention. To address this, we synthesized evidence on AYAs' eating experiences and well-being during mealtime-related activities to inform health care practice. Qualitative and mixed-method studies were identified through searches across CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for studies published up to May 2025, supplemented by snowball searches. Of 3214 records, 74 full-text articles were reviewed, and 18 met the inclusion criteria. These represented 302 AYAs, 73 relatives, and 88 health care professionals. Studies were analyzed using Joanna Briggs Institute review methods and GRADE-CERQual to support clinical interpretability. The meta-synthesis identified one core theme: "Eating as an embodied struggle and act of agency," with three subthemes: (a) living through physical and sensory disruption, (b) carrying the weight of new emotions and shifting relations, and (c) finding ways through gaps in support. Eating emerged as a disrupted, emotionally charged, yet agentic act requiring sensitive, individualized approaches. Thirteen evidence-informed recommendations were developed to guide clinical application. These emphasize early nutritional screening, dietetic support, flexible meal options, respectful family involvement, and psychosocially attuned care. Future research should codevelop and evaluate tailored interventions that address AYAs' embodied, emotional, and social needs to improve eating-related quality of life during cancer treatment.
