Scholastic attainment and employment of drug users in Singapore.

A study of the educational and employment aspects of drug use, which was carried out in 1980 in Singapore, included 100 drug users randomly selected from those who had been, because of drug addiction, registered for treatment and rehabilitation by some major voluntary organizations dealing with drug abuse problems, and 100 non-users individually matched for sex, approximate age, ethnic group, education and neighbourhood. The respondents were interviewed on the basis of a questionnaire designed to collect data for this study. Data on 11 items of the questionnaire were available in official records which were used to check the truthfulness of the responses of the drug users. The agreement between the two sources of data ranged from 83 to 100 per cent. The drug users were found to have significantly lower levels of educational attainment and poorer scholastic results than the non-users. Similarly, significantly more drug users than non-users had a lower career status, higher instability in employment and greater job dissatisfaction. The author suggests that educational and vocational guidance, counselling service, welfare schemes and in-service training should cater to this group of people.

[Social and occupational adaptation of young workers in a workshop].

The young workers adaptation to the workplace depends on a number of psycho-social and professional factors, such as: competences, qualifications, personality, attitude to work, attitude to superiors and co-workers in a social group etc. Furthermore, the psycho-social adaptation depends on the style of life led so far and the impact of the family- and school milieu. The professional adaptation begins when one chooses his future profession. However, it is not easy to choose a profession that would give satisfaction and meet young people's ambitions. A considerable assistance in this area comes from vocational guidance dispensaries and health service, especially for young people suffering from psychophysical defects. In the initial period of professional work it becomes essential to ensure that the young worker is well informed on his workplace, range of duties and all relevant problems inherent in the workplace as well as some guidance as regards possible promotion and improvement of qualifications, and the use of all possible social allowances. A young worker should not in any way feel isolated in his workplace. The person who imparts all the information should not only be a good expert and production organizer, but a good educator as well.

[Diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus, optic nerve atrophy, and deafness--an autosomal recessive syndrome (didmoad-syndrome) (author's transl)].

By reporting a further case attention is drawn to the autosomal recessive inherited DIDMOAD-syndrome. While diabetes mellitus and optic atrophy are easy to recognize, one often has specifically to look for deafness, diabetes insipidus and the frequently associated dilatation of the urinary tract. Awareness of this condition is important for genetic counselling and vocational guidance, and allows to avoid invasive neuroradiological investigations.

[Female veterinary surgeons: a follow up study].

Questionnaires were sent out to 68 registered female veterinary surgeons in South Africa to obtain career information essential to vocational guidance. The 46 respondents represent 51,7% of the 89 female BVSc graduates up to 1981; their average age was 33,3 years, 63% were married, 30,4% were from the Pretoria area, 60,9% were living in the Transvaal, 52,2% had had 6 and more years of veterinary experience. All the comparisons done indicated that the response group was representative of the women who had obtained the BVSc degree from the University of Pretoria. Some of the more important findings were the following: No less than 97,8% of the response group are at present actively engaged in veterinary work--73,9% on a full-time basis. Asked what they would choose now, 84,8% of the respondents declared that they would choose veterinary science once again; 67,4% would like to see their daughters enter the profession. The most important reason for this positive attraction towards veterinary practice was given as "job satisfaction experienced". Respondents indicated the things that they liked about veterinary practice: factors intrinsic to the job like surgery, pathology and research topped the list followed by the opportunity to work with and help animals and also the variety experienced in their work. The most important grievances were firstly the general attitude and actions of the public--callousness of animal-owners and inconsiderate behaviour towards practitioners. Long and irregular hours, administrative red tape and insufficient technical help were also complaints.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Questions of habilitation-rehabilitation in diabetes mellitus].

As a result of the up to date treatment the life quality of diabetic patients is improved, their life span is prolonged. The authors recite the guidelines of vocational guidance and disability evaluation of diabetics. It is generally accepted that patients treated by diet alone may choose any profession, their lifestyle need not differ from that of healthy people. Well educated diabetic patients on oral antidiabetics or insulin, who have near normoglycemic blood sugar levels, can follow the lifestyle of a healthy individual; yet they should avoid occupations where their own or others lives might be put in danger. The authors recite effective departmental orders about the questions that influence the lives of diabetic patients-for example drivers licence, sports facilities for diabetics- and are the most frequently encountered by experts. Problems of rehabilitation that arise during the management of diabetics are also discussed.

[Socioeconomic reality: the context in which vocational and professional guidance have to deal with].

In this work we describe and analyze today's Latin American occupational reality, according to the world economical context we live in. We mention up-to-date data about employment and unemployment rates, from different countries of Latin America, Europe, and also from Japan. Besides that we have taken into account the technological development and the demographic growth, as essential variables in order to understand the labor phenomenon and its possible prospect, as well as the psychosociological consequences or unemployment. We also analyze the future of some professions. We think that all this information gathered from different sources, is essential to the professional who has to guide teen-agers at the time of the Ocupational-Vocational election. This is also necessary to all those who deal with Professional Guidance and with the Planning of Careers that have already been chosen.
