Application of a multi-dentate amphiphilic compound to transfer silver nanoparticles into an organic solvent.

A multi-dentate amphiphilic compound, 3,3'-(dodecylazanediyl)-bis-[N-(2-aminoethyl)propanamide] (12C-2NH2) has been synthesized. The molecular structure was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, and fast atom bombardment mass (FAB-MS) spectra. 12C-2NH2 was employed to stabilize silver nanoparticles. Surface properties and stability of silver nanoparticles were controlled by adjusting the 12C-2NH2 to silver (0) molar ratio. 12C-2NH2 was also applied to transfer silver nanoparticles from an aqueous to an organic phase. The transfer efficiency depends on 12C-2NH2 concentration. When 12C-2NH2 to silver (0) molar ratio was 2:1, the highest efficiency of phase transfer to toluene was obtained. These 12C-2NH2 stabilized silver nanoparticles are very stable over a period of four days in toluene.

Disinfection of sludge with high pathogenic content using silver and other compounds.

A physicochemical sludge with high microbial content (10(2)-10(4) FPU/g TS bacteriophages, 10(6)-10(7) MPN/g TS faecal coliforms, 10(4) MPN/g TS Salmonella spp., 10(4) MPN/g TS Shigella spp., 10(3) MPN/g TS Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 10(2) MPN/g TS Vibrio cholerae, 10(2)-10(3) cysts/g TS Giardia sp., 10(2)-10(4) oocyts/g TS Cryptosporidium sp., 168-215 viable helminth ova/g TS) was disinfected using silver, silver-copper, and silver-copper plus a synergistic agent (SA). Twenty milligrams Ag/g TS inactivated 4.8 log of faecal coliforms in 1 h; however, 40 mg Ag/g TS are needed to reduce helminth ova viability from 84 to 38.4% in the same period of time. Combinations of Ag-Cu (60:600 mg Ag-Cu/g TS) and Ag-SA (60:24 mg Ag-SA/g TS) inactivated 7.8 log of faecal coliforms and around 90% of helminth ova in 60 min. To produce USEPA class A biosolids, 10:100:8 and 5:50:13.3 mg Ag-Cu-SA/gTS are needed. Bacterial regrowth was not observed for all conditions producing <1000 MPN/gTS faecal coliforms, suggesting a residual disinfection effect. Recommended doses to produce class A biosolids inactivated 2-4 log of bacteriophages, 4 log of Salmonella spp., 4 log of Shigella spp., 3 log of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 2 log of Vibrio cholerae, 87-99.9% of Giardia sp., and 75-99.9% of Cryptosporidium sp.

Synthesis of open and closed metallacages using novel tripodal ligands: unusually stable silver(I) inclusion compound.

The tripodal ligand 1,3,5-(CH3)3C6[CH2OCH2C(pz)3]3 (L1, pz=pyrazolyl ring) reacts with AgBF4 to yield ([L12Ag3(CH3CN)](BF4)3).(CH3CN)4, an inclusion complex in which the encapsulated acetonitrile cannot escape the triangular cage unit in either the solid or solution phase. The analogous hexatopic ligand C6[CH2OCH2C(pz)3]6 forms a 2-dimensional polymer composed of similar triangular cage units, again with the encapsulation of one acetonitrile molecule, linked by the additional tris(pyrazolyl)methane units. In contrast, the complex formed with L1 and Cd2+ has a double, open cage structure holding two diethyl ether molecules.

Mechanism of irreversible inactivation of phosphomannose isomerases by silver ions and flamazine.

Silver ions and silver-containing compounds have been used as topical antimicrobial agents in a variety of clinical situations. We have previously shown that the enzyme phosphomannose isomerase (PMI) is essential for the biosynthesis of Candida albicans cell walls. In this study, we find that PMI can be inhibited by silver ions. This process is shown to be irreversible, and is a two-step process, involving an intermediate complex with a dissociation constant, Ki, of 59 +/- 8 microM, and a maximum rate of inactivation of 0.25 +/- 0.04 min-1 in 50 mM Hepes buffer, pH 8.0 at 37 degrees C. The enzyme can be protected against this inactivation by the substrate mannose 6-phosphate, with a dissociation constant of 0.31 +/- 0.04 mM, close to its Km value. Flamazine (silver sulfadiazine) is a silver-containing antibiotic which is used clinically as a topical antimicrobial and antifungal agent. We compared the ability of silver sulfadiazine and two other silver-containing compounds to irreversibly inactivate C. albicans PMI. The addition of the organic moiety increased the affinity of the compounds, with silver sulfadiazine showing a Ki of 190 +/- 30 nM. In all cases, the maximum inhibition rate was similar, implying a similar rate-determining step. Silver sulfadiazine does not inhibit Escherichia coli PMI, and this suggests a role of the only free cysteine, Cys-150, in the inactivation process. To confirm this, we mutated this residue to alanine in C. albicans PMI. The resultant Cys150 --> Ala mutant protein showed similar Vm and Km values to the wild-type enzyme.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A comparative study of third-order nonlinear optical properties of silver phenylacetylide and related compounds via ultrafast optical Kerr effect measurements.

A comparative study of the third-order nonlinear optical properties, via the newly developed heterodyned optical Kerr effect (OHD-OKE) measurements, of silver phenylacetylide and related compounds is reported. [AgC[triple bond]CC(6)H(5)](n) (1) was found to exhibit efficient third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility chi((3)) of 2.4 x 10(-14) esu, and second hyperpolarizability gamma of 9.07 x 10(-32) esu. These results are compared with those of two related silver phenylacetylide compounds, namely, a double salt, (silver phenylacetylide).(silver tert-butylthiolate) [AgC[triple bond]CC(6)H(5).AgS(t-C(4)H(9))](n) complex (2), and a cluster, triphenylphosphine silver phenylacetylide tetramer, [(C(6)H(5))(3)PAgC[triple bond]CC(6)H(5)](4) (3), as well as that of the related organic polymer polyphenylacetylene (4). These four compounds represent different types of phenylacetylide derivatives: 1 is an organometallic polymer, 2 a polymeric double salt, 3 a discrete metal cluster, and 4 an organic polymer. It was found that the third-order optical nonlinear response was enhanced by the incorporation of silver d electrons into the delocalized conjugated organic pi system, and its magnitude is highly dependent upon the extent of the pi delocalization. Specifically, the relative magnitudes of chi((3)) and gamma follow the order silver phenylacetylide polymer (1) > (silver phenylacetylide).(silver tert-butylthiolate) double salt (2) > polyphenylacetylene polymer (4) > tetrameric (triphenylphosphine silver phenylacetylide)(4) cluster (3). The observed trend may be attributed to the decreasing length of pi conjugation. It is interesting to note that the incorporation of Ag(I) into the polymeric framework of polyphenylacetylene enhances the chi((3)) by 25-fold for the same degree of polymerization (n = 7). The signs of chi((3)) and gamma, which are related to the response mechanisms, were found to be solvent dependent.

Effects of four anticaries agents on lesion depth progression in an in vitro caries model.

PURPOSE: This study compares four chemotherapeutic regimens used for inhibiting carious lesion progression: silver nitrate (AgNO3); silver fluoride/stannous fluoride (AgF/SnF2); silver diammine fluoride (SDF); and chlorhexidine (CHX). METHODS: For this study, a bacterial model system containing Mutans streptococci (MS) and Lactobacilli casei (L) was used to generate carious lesions on 85 extracted sound permanent third molars which were randomly assigned to four test groups and one control group. At week two, the four treatment regimens were applied to the lesions (one treatment per test group). RESULTS: Six weeks later, lesions treated with a single AgF/SnF2 or AgNO3 application demonstrated 29% and 19% less lesion progression, respectively, than did the control group (P < 0.05). SDF and CHX did not differ significantly from the control. CONCLUSION: AgF/SnF2 and AgNO3 may be useful in slowing down carious lesion depth progression.

Spontaneous formation of core/shell bimetallic nanoparticles: a calorimetric study.

We showed recently that low entropy core/shell structured nanoparticles form spontaneously from the physical mixture of a dispersion of Ag nanoparticles and that of another noble metal (Rh, Pd, or Pt) at room temperature. Here we use isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and show that the initial step of such a spontaneous process is strongly exothermic. When the alcohol dispersion of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP)-protected Rh nanoparticles (average diameter 2.3 nm) was titrated into the alcoholic dispersion of PVP-protected Ag nanoparticles, a strong exothermic enthalpy change, DeltaH, was observed: DeltaH = -908 kJ/mol for Ag(S) nanoparticle (average diameter 10.8 nm) and -963 kJ/mol for Ag(L) nanoparticles (average diameter 22.5 nm). The strength of interaction increases in the order of Rh/Ag > Pd/Ag > Pt/Ag. This strong exothermic interaction is considered as a driving force to from low entropy bimetallic nanoparticles by simple mixing of two kinds of monometallic nanoparticles. We show also that exothermic interactions occur between a pair of noble metal nanoparticles themselves by using ITC.

Intercalation of gaseous thiols and sulfides into Ag+ ion-exchanged aluminum dihydrogen triphosphate.

Ag(+) ion-exchanged layered aluminum dihydrogen triphosphate (AlP) with the interlayer distance of 0.85 nm was synthesized by the ion-exchange of proton in triphosphate with Ag(+) ion. The amount of exchanged Ag(+) ion depended on the concentration of AgNO(3) aqueous solution. Ag(+) ion-exchanged AlP adsorbed gaseous thiols and sulfides into the interlayer region. The adsorption amounts of thiols were more than those of sulfides, thiols with one mercapto group > thiol with two mercapto groups > sulfides, and depended on the amount of exchanged Ag(+) ion in the interlayer region. The thiols with one mercapto group were intercalated to expand the interlayer distance of Ag(+) ion-exchanged AlP, whereas there was no expansion in the adsorption of sulfide. In the case of thiol with two mercapto groups, there was observed contraction of the interlayer distance through the bridging with Ag(+) ions of the upper and lower sides of the interlayer region.
