Between 1962 and 1994, 32 isolates of Trichophyton verrucosum from cases of tinea corporis, tinea faciei and tinea capitis were referred to the Mycology Reference Laboratory of the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit at The University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Patients had presented at clinics in metropolitan Melbourne and country towns in the State of Victoria, Australia. They included dairy and cattle farmers, a slaughterman who worked in an abattoir, a veterinary tutor and children who lived on farms. Many patients lived in one of the three dairy farming areas of Victoria. A few lived in the outer suburbs of Melbourne. One cattle farmer came from south-east New South Wales. Specimens were not received for examination from animal contacts of the patients. The only patient from overseas was a boy from Lebanon. The literature recording human infections due to T. verrucosum in Australia is reviewed.

In this study we have measured the mean hyphal length as a function of the density of infection in skin surface biopsies from patients suffering from infection with different species of dermatophyte. The tissue response in the epidermis and dermis of these patients was evaluated for the degree of eczematization (epidermal thickening, spongiosis and dermal infiltrate) in periodic acid Schiff stained histological sections, employing visual analogue scales. There was no correlation between mean hyphal density and the degree of eczematization.

A 10-year-old boy with a past medical history significant for chicken pox at 7 years of age was referred to our eye center by an outside ophthalmologist for a 15-day history of worsening right-sided preseptal cellulitis. The patient reported photophobia, pruritus, and pain in the eyelid region. There appeared to be vesicular lesions on the eyelids. Empiric therapy with oral antibacterial and antiviral medications failed to resolve the preseptal cellulitis. Lid cultures revealed coagulase negative Staphylococcus, Streptococcal viridans, and a Trichophyton species of fungus. The infection was successfully treated with two courses of oral itraconazole. This is the first case of preseptal cellulitis caused by this dermatophyte that we could find in the literature.
