[Rehabilitation of patients with stomach cancer at health resorts].

The paper deals with the results of treatment of 80 radically operated gastric cancer patients at a rehabilitation gastroenterologic department of a health resort at Morshin. Postresection syndrome frequency in this group was lower than that in controls: loss of weight--15% 27.8% in controls, dumping syndrome--25% 4.6% in controls, reflux-esophagitis--6.3% 9.2% in controls and anemia--11.2% of cases 15.4% in controls. Rehabilitation treatment was particularly effective in cases of gastritis of the stump, anacidity and enterocolitis. Also, it was followed by a greater decrease in the frequency of psychogenic reactions from 65.0 to 15.0% 58.5%--34.1% in controls.

Viral respiratory infections in asthmatic children staying in a mountain resort.

In 32 mainly atopic children (aged 9-16 years) staying in a mountain resort the effects of viral infections on the course of asthma were studied. Daily surveillance was made of respiratory infection symptoms and clinical parameters for asthma, including forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1). Serology for several respiratory viruses. Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia psittaci was done. In 58 symptomatic respiratory infections (SRI) 39 asthmatic exacerbations occurred (67%). Eighteen SRIs of viral origin caused 16 exacerbations (89%). Twenty-one seroconversions with mild or absent symptoms of infection gave six exacerbations (29%). Five flare-ups of asthma in eight episodes of seroconversion (63%) during which patients were not under observation were reported. Streptococcal pharyngitis did not cause asthmatic reactions. Thirteen SRIs due to influenza A all caused asthmatic exacerbations. The similarity of these data to those in children with "intrinsic" asthma suggests that the development of viral excerbations in asthmatics is not determined by whether the patient is allergic or not.

[Experience in rehabilitating cancer patients at sanatoria and health resorts].

The paper discusses the results of a study of the case histories of 90 cancer patients. 48 of these patients received a course of treatment including physical rehabilitative therapy, dietotherapy, mesenchemotherapy (fractionated doses of ACS Bogomoletz, zymosan, splenin), oxygen and iodine-bromine baths, mineralized water and non-specific medication (vitamins, ext. eleutherococci, methonine, cholenzyme) and psychotherapy. It is suggested that non-specific therapy generally provided at health resort establishments is indicated in radically-operated stomach and breast cancer patients who reveal no signs of recurrence or metastases. Such therapy may contribute to social and occupational rehabilitation of cancer patients.

[The effect of radon baths at Khmel'nik health resort on the central hemodynamic indices, on thyroid function and on adrenal glucocorticoid function in hypertension patients].

As many as 63 patients with stage I, II hypertensive disease were examined. Characteristics of central hemodynamics were studied by means of tetrapolar thoracic rheography, the content of thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroxin, triiodothyranine, hydrocortisone were determined by radioimmunologic method. All investigations were done before and after the patients having radon baths. Hypotensive effect of radon baths in hyperkinetic type hemodynamics was manifested by a significant drop in cardiac index and increase in specific peripheral resistance. In hypokinetic type hemodynamics there was a significant fall in average hemodynamic pressure, and improvement of the arteriole patency. The levels of thyroxin and hydrocortisone have raised significantly. The Khmel'nik health resort radon baths have hypotensive effect in HD patients, enhance the function of the thyroid gland and glucocorticoid function of the adrenals.

[The terrain cure under moderate altitude hypoxia in the combined sanatorium-health resort treatment of patients with ischemic heart disease after aortocoronary bypass].

Muscular exercise in the form of terrain walking proved to be a useful component of combined conditioning of coronary heart disease patients after aortocoronary shunt functional class 1 and 2. In conditions of moderate altitude resort such training mobilizes cardiovascular reserves of CHD patients. The outcome of the above sanatorium rehabilitation depends largely on contractility of left ventricular myocardium.

[Results of treatment of patients with chronic glomerulonephritis at different health resorts].

The results of sanatorium treatment were compared for different health resorts (in the Middle Asia, Yalta, Sestroretsk) where 374 patients underwent 455 courses for chronic glomerulonephritis. The results of the treatment were similar except for the Middle Asia and Yalta sanatoria where the condition of the patients aggravated. This suggests a conclusion of an unfavorable effect of hot climate on the course of chronic glomerulonephritis.

[Sanatorium-health resort care in the system of medical service to the population exposed to radiation as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

The analysis of the reports made by 77 local medical administrations in the Russian Federation indicates unsatisfactory employment of sanatorium facilities for improving health of radiation-exposed population. Health resorts and sanatoria of the Russian Middle Zone should extend care for those who suffer from the Chernobyl accident aftereffects.

Interstate measles transmission from a ski resort--Colorado, 1994.

During April 1-May 25, 1994, a chain of measles transmission began in Breckenridge, Colorado, and extended into nine additional states; a total of 247 measles cases were reported, representing 36% of all U.S. measles cases reported to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (excluding those reported from U.S. territories) through July 2 (week 26). The source of exposure was unknown but is believed to have been an out-of-state tourist who probably visited Breckenridge during March because 1) no measles cases had previously been reported in Colorado during 1994, and 2) the only common exposure appeared to have been at a ski resort visited by many out-of-state travelers. Persons associated with spread of measles from Breckenridge were predominantly school- and college-aged. This report summarizes the investigation of this chain of interstate measles transmission.

[Experience in using hyperthermia in combination with the radon pool in the combined treatment of patients with arteriosclerosis obliterans at the Belokurikha health resort].

The patients with atherosclerosis obliterans of the peripheral arteries received sanatorium treatment at Belokurikha health resort. The treatment (thermoradonotherapy) involved hyperthermia in sauna combined with radon pool. The above combination turned out superior to conventional radonotherapy provided the procedures were well tolerated and no balneoreactions arose.

[Eosinophilic reactions in patients with bronchial asthma and possibilities of their neutralization during health resort treatment].

Patients with the eosinophilic variant of bronchial asthma were found to be characterized by a high level of fibrinolytic activity in bronchial secretion and a low level of IgA in it, as was detected in the course of health resort treatment. The said changes were as a rule not corrected by routine spa therapy. Addition of sodium hydrocarbonate and heparin aerosols to the therapeutic complex was conducive to neutralization of cationic proteins and of the major eosinophilic protein in the bronchial lumen. These measures led to normalization of IgA level in the sputum and to reduction of the fibrinolytic activity of the sputum.

[Instead of vacation at shoal resort, a stay in the hospital--aspects of illness during vacation].

Every summer, the number of hospitalizations for acute deterioration of a chronic disease increases in the Southern Northsea holiday region. These patients usually are holiday-makers coming to the region for recreation. This study analyzes the relationships among acute illness, reason for going on holiday, existing chronic disease, mode of transport/arrival, and consultation of general practitioner beforehand. A total of 62 holiday-makers from the region who had been hospitalized for internal illness were included in the study. 80.6% of them knew to be suffering from a chronic disease. In 41 patients, acute deterioration of their chronic condition within a few days after their arrival had resulted in admission to the hospital. Usually, their doctor had not advised against the intended holiday trip. The study findings indicate that chronically ill patients need individualized counselling about potential medical hazards associated with their chronic condition especially in light of the physical and emotional strains involved in an intended holiday. Also, mention should be made of the possibilities for participating in an organized health-resort programme.

[Experience with the early health resort rehabilitation of patients who have undergone a surgical intervention for peptic ulcer].

The present article focuses on the analysis of results of health-resort rehabilitative treatment of 49 patients operated on for gastric and duodenal ulcer, in the early postoperative period (by day 20). The treatments were administered at the health-promotion centre Iuzhnyĭ [correction of "Yuzhny"] (Mirgorod), the Mirgorod mineral water having been taken as a basis of said treatment. A conclusion was reached to the effect that the optimum term for entering the patients into the rehabilitative project and ensuring their complication-free status is day 20 after the operation. This study addresses the issue of the effects Helicobacter pylori has on the inflammatory processes in the remaining portion of the stomach. The presence of Helicobacter pylori in the above portion of the stomach suggests it has no part in the etiology of its inflammatory processes.

[The dynamic clinical manifestations of ischemic heart disease during the rehabilitation at a low-altitude health resort of patients who have undergone surgical myocardial revascularization].

Left ventricular myocardial contractility was found essential in dynamics of clinical IHD picture in patients on rehabilitation treatment at low mountain resorts. All the patients have previously undergone surgical myocardial revascularization. Patients with normal left ventricular myocardial contractility benefited most of all.

[Changes in cardiovascular function of ischemic heart disease patients on the course of rehabilitation at low-mountain health resort after surgical revascularization of myocardium].

Sanatorium treatment at low-mountain resort of IHD-patients subjected to surgical revascularization brought an increase in exercise tolerance, a positive trend in ECG parameters, improvement in left ventricular myocardial contractility. The benefit is especially pronounced in patients with IHD of functional class I, II and normal contractility of the left ventricular myocardium.

[The intensity of cesium-137 elimination in victims of the Chernobyl catastrophe at the balneology health resort of Truskavets].

A clinical study was made of rate of elimination of radiocaesium in 137 adult subjects and 4700 children residing in the territory affected by radioactive contamination caused by the Chernobyl accident, undergoing rehabilitative treatment at the Truskavets health resort. A complex of therapeutic measures involving the use of the mineral water "Naftusia" containing few mineral substances, and, in addition, enterosorbents (Silard-P, Enterosgel, Ferrocin), the concentrated product "Vin-Vita" were associated with moderate stimulation of elimination of 137Cs from the organism. Supplementary ferrocin over six days had the best effect in the above series, with the activity of radiocaesium having been decreased by 40% whereas a complex of therapeutic measures over 20 days with no such supplement led to 17% reduction in 137Cs. It is suggested that ferrocin be included into the complex of therapeutic measures designed to eliminate 137Cs from the organism.
