Changes in Sri Lankan marriage law expected.

The Sri Lankan government is about to introduce sweeping changes in the marriage laws, the Minister for Home Affairs announced recently. One of the most important changes will be an increase in the minimum age at marriage, from 16 to 18 years for males, and from 12 to 16 years for females. Additionally, the government plans to codify the laws and make them more available to the public. The changes will come into force soon, the Minister stated.

[The increase in cohabitation: changes in related demographic behavior].

"The Dutch period- and age-specific hazard rates of marriages, cohabitation, [and] dissolution of cohabitation are studied. Also, family formation according to living arrangement of the mother is examined. The number of cohabiting persons has risen markedly.... Rates of direct marriage have declined.... The increased period of cohabitation is mainly linked with a delay in marriage among young cohabitors; it does, however, not coincide with a decreasing risk dissolution.... Fertility rates of married women have risen across the birth cohorts, while fertility rates of cohabiting women and women living without partner have remained fairly stable." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[Addition to "Chen Muhua Speaks" at family planning meeting].

The following addition supplied from Beijing Renmin Ribao in Chinese of February 3, 1980 from page 1 should be made to the article "Chen Muhua, Bo Yibo Speak at Family Planning Meeting," published in the February 4 People's Republic of China Daily Report on page L2: Page L2, 1st paragraph, line 3: "...in due course, so that the total population of China will be controlled at about 1.2 billion by the end of this century, in order to insure greater and faster economic development in the country and improvements in the people's living standards, and to raise the cultural level of the Chinese nation." "Chen Muhua made this calculation: If young people marry at age 20, there will be 5 generations in a century; but if they marry at age 25, there will be only 4. The reduction by a whole generation of people is a matter of great importance in controlling population growth. Besides, in his prime a youth should be wholeheartedly devoted to his study and work in order to make greater contributions to the 4 modernizations. For this reason, for both the nation and the indivduals concerned it is profitable for citizens to delay marriages and childbirth and exercise birth control." She was speaking...

[On some characteristics of Tahitian family groups. Standards, behavior, projection].

"[This is a] study of the evolution of the Tahitian family group through systematic analysis of a set of files of candidates for low cost housing. This first showed a set of frequently little-known standards: the normal nature of concubinage, relatively late marriage, the establishment of the family only considered as being effective with the third child, the generalization of adoption, etc. The trend towards nuclear families is then questioned. The nuclear family model is spreading rapidly and even appears to be consciously desired by many young couples. However, the extended family in various forms (with a tendency to favour matrilineal extensions) remains preponderant and conserves an essential social integration function in Tahitian society."
