Once-daily intravenous busulfan and fludarabine: clinical and pharmacokinetic results of a myeloablative, reduced-toxicity conditioning regimen for allogeneic stem cell transplantation in AML and MDS.

Postulating favorable antileukemic effect with improved safety, we used intravenous busulfan and fludarabine as conditioning therapy for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Fludarabine 40 mg/m2 and intravenous busulfan 130 mg/m2 were given once daily for 4 days, with tacrolimus-methotrexate as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis. We treated 74 patients with AML and 22 patients with MDS; patients had a median age of 45 years (range, 19-66 years). Only 20% of the patients were in first complete remission (CR) at transplantation. Donors were HLA-compatible related (n = 60) or matched unrelated (n = 36). The CR rate for 54 patients with active disease was 85%. At a median follow-up of 12 months, 1-year regimen-related and treatment-related mortalities were 1% and 3%, respectively. Two patients had reversible hepatic veno-occlusive disease. Actuarial 1-year overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) were 65% and 52% for all patients, and 81% and 75% for patients receiving transplants in CR. Recipient age and donor type did not influence OS or EFS. Median busulfan clearance was 109 mL/min/m2 and median daily area-under-the-plasma-concentration-versus-time-curve was 4871 micromol-min, with negligible interdose variability in pharmacokinetic parameters. The results suggest that intravenous busulfan-fludarabine is an efficacious, reduced-toxicity, myeloablative-conditioning regimen for patients with AML or MDS undergoing HSCT.

Effects of LH and PGF2alpha in equine dominant follicles observed by MDS.

Microdialysis System (MDS) is a novel technique used for investigation of molecule secretion between different cell populations. Local hormonal secretion at follicular wall has been still unclear. This MDS study was used to determine progesterone (P4), androstenedione (A4), estradiol-17beta (E2) and Prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) release in mare pre-ovulatory follicles. Follicles larger than 30 mm were isolated from the ovary and follicular fluid aspirated for hormone assay. Follicular fluid collected from small, middle and large follicles were analyzed by EIA. The concentrations of P4 and PGF2alpha were similar among the different sizes of follicles. The release of A4 was observed in middle and large follicles. E2 concentration was observed in middle follicles and was higher in large follicles compared with middle follicles. Follicular wall was cut and incubated for MDS and when LH was infused, there was an increase in P4 and A4 release. PGF2alpha release was considerably high after LH infusion compared to the control group. Infusion of PGF2alpha increased P4 and A4 release but there was no change in E2 release. This results suggest that in pre-ovulatory follicles, LH stimulates theca interna cells and also PGF2alpha seemed to have a mediator role to induce steroid hormone production and luteinization of follicular cells. The nature of the mechanisms involved in selection of large follicles is still a perplexing research problem in reproduction.

DNA hypermethylation of myeloid cells, a novel therapeutic target in MDS and AML.

Differential methylation of CpG islands is a regulatory mechanism for promoter activity of different classes of genes, including tissue-specific genes. These CpG islands are targets for transformation-associated, aberrant hypermethylation activity during leukemogenesis. Therefore the pharmacological reversion of this methylator phenotype (e.g. by reactivation of tumor suppressor gene expression) is an important rationale for development of inhibitors of DNA methyltransferase activity. In vitro, inhibition of methylation using azanucleosides results in modest differentiation of transformed myeloid cell lines. In vivo, low doses of these agents induce DNA demethylation of malignant myeloid cells. Indeed, the first drug specifically approved for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) was the azanucleoside 5-azacytidine (Vidaza). The most potent DNA demethylating agent available, 5-aza-2' deoxycytidine (Decitabine, Dacogen) also has recently been approved by the U.S.A. FDA for treatment of MDS of all subtypes. About 30 % of MDS patients with an abnormal karyotype have normalization of their karyotype after receiving the drug. This activity is especially relevant in patients with high-risk karyotypic abnormalities (complex karyotype and/or abnormalities of chromosome 7) compared to patients with intermediate-risk karyotype. Both drugs offer a novel, non-intensive therapeutic approach, particularly in the older patient population who due to comorbidities and/or reduced performance status are ineligible for aggressive chemotherapies. Target genes being particularly prone to demethylation by these drugs in the aberrant cells (e.g. p15/INK4b) are under active investigation. Future translational and clinical studies will be aimed at improving the response rate and duration of response to non-intensive treatment with demethylating agents, by studying rational drug combinations e.g. with inhibitors of histone deacetylase activity.

Excessive apoptosis in low risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).

The paradox of peripheral cytopenias despite a normo/hypercellular marrow in MDS has been ascribed to excessive intramedullary hematopoietic cell apoptosis. Programmed cell death (PCD) in early disease might be triggered by the BM microenvironment, mediated either through inhibitory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) or fas/fas ligand signaling or through a relative deficiency in hematopoietic growth factors. Intrinsic cellular defects giving rise to abnormalities in cell-cell or cell-stromal interaction, cell signaling or cell cycling may also underlie hematopoietic progenitor apoptosis. Alternatively, an early 'hit' in the multistep pathogenesis of MDS may result in a higher proliferative rate of the neoplastic clone. Increased apoptosis may thus represent a homeostatic process to control cell numbers. This paper shall summarize current evidence implicating a role for increased PCD in low risk MDS, outline possible etiologic factors and suggest potential therapeutic mechanisms whereby excessive hematopoietic progenitor cell apoptosis might be circumvented.

Idarubicin in combination with cytarabine and VP-16 in the treatment of post myelodysplastic syndrome acute myeloblastic leukemia (MDS-AML).

Fifteen patients with a primary myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) transformed into acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) were treated with an intensive chemotherapy regimen containing idarubicin. A complete response (CR) was obtained in 10 patients (66.6%). In five of them this was achieved after a single course of chemotherapy. The median time to achieve a CR was 32 days (range 16-42). A partial remission (PR) was obtained in 2 patients after two induction courses of chemotherapy. One patient died during the first induction course following acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) complication, whereas the chemotherapy regimen failed in 2 patients. A short interval between MDS and transformation into AML was associated with a better chance of achieving a CR. Age, karyotype, type of MDS, peripheral blood or bone marrow findings appeared to have no influence on the response to treatment. The median event free survival for patients who achieved CR was 15 months and the median actuarial survival 18 months. These preliminary results need to be confirmed in a multicentre prospective study comparing idarubicin with other anthracyclines.

[Evaluation and improvement of medical and nursing service and caregiving for the elderly using MDS. 2. Diagnosis and symptoms, especially diseases causing care-requiring conditions].

Diagnoses recorded in the chapter E of Minimum Data Set (MDS) were analyzed in patients requiring care admitted in a geriatric hospital in Sapporo, Japan. They were classified as: A-diseases causing care-requiring conditions, B-their symptoms, and C-coexisting diseases requiring no care. Orthopedic diseases were not analyzed because they were not adequately recorded in MDS system. Class A diagnoses varied, but only five diagnoses were responsible for 3% or more of the total patients who required care. They were 1) Alzheimer's disease (AD), 2) Parkinson's disease, 3) dementia other than AD without neurological symptoms, 4) dementia other than AD with sequelae of stroke, and 5) sequelae of stroke without dementia. These diagnoses pooled represented over 90% of all patients. "Diagnoses and symptoms" in MDS were useful to 1) describe medical problems briefly in a predetermined format, 2) evaluate urgent or unstable conditions separately from stable diagnoses and symptoms, and 3) use common information by various professions, but have difficulties because 1) preselected diagnoses were few and unsuited to practices in Japan, 2) it is impossible to record a previous disease in the past that initiated the process leading to the present disabilities, and 3) it is also impossible to record the severities of the diseases and symptoms.

Coagulation activation is associated with genomic-instability-related features in TP53-mutated AML and MDS: routine laboratory patterns beyond classical disseminated intravascular coagulation.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a serious complication of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) associated with poor prognosis. In TP53-mutated AML and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), however, the classical ISTH criteria rarely identify overt DIC, although bleeding and thrombotic complications are well documented in acute leukaemia. We hypothesized that these patients exhibit a lower-grade, subclinical coagulation activation that is associated with the underlying genomic-instability-related features of TP53-mutant disease. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 107 consecutive patients with TP53-mutated AML (n = 52) or high-risk MDS (MDS, n = 55), median age 65 years, diagnosed and initially evaluated at our centre between 2018 and 2025. Seven routine coagulation markers and 46 co-mutated genes were evaluated for associations with overall survival (OS) using univariate and multivariable Cox regression, continuous dose-response modeling, and unsupervised k-means clustering. Internal validity was assessed by 1000 bootstrap resamples. RESULTS: Overt DIC according to ISTH criteria was rare (15%). Subclinical activation was common: 50% of patients had a D-dimer ≥1 μg/mL, 41% a fibrinogen ≥4 g/L, and 29% an INR ≥1.2. In univariate analysis, D-dimer, fibrinogen, INR, prothrombin time, and activated partial thromboplastin time were each associated with OS (HR 1.33-1.38 per SD; all p < 0.05). Complex karyotype correlated with higher D-dimer (median 1.39 vs. 0.60 μg/mL, p = 0.022) and fibrinogen (3.91 vs. 2.53 g/L, p = 0.007), while TP53 variant allele frequency (VAF) showed modest positive correlations with D-dimer (ρ = 0.21), INR (ρ = 0.27), and PT (ρ = 0.27; all p < 0.05). Clustering identified three coagulation phenotypes: Silent (51%), Thrombo-inflammatory (31%), and Consumption-like (18%), showing a graded but statistically non-significant gradient in molecular features and a stepwise decline in median OS (14, 10 and 8 months; log-rank p = 0.041). After adjustment for complex karyotype, TP53 VAF, and favorable co-mutation count, the Consumption-like phenotype was associated with a non-significant increased risk (HR 1.83, 95% CI 0.92-3.65, p = 0.084), whereas favorable co-mutation pathways remained independently protective (HR 0.56, 95% CI 0.35-0.90, p = 0.016). CONCLUSION: In TP53-mutated AML/MDS, coagulation activation intensity is associated with the degree of genomic instability. The three phenotypes may add biological resolution beyond classical DIC and cytogenetic risk groups, but represent laboratory patterns rather than validated bleeding or thrombosis prediction tools. However, after accounting for genomic features, phenotypes were not independent predictors of outcome, with complex karyotype, TP53 VAF, and favorable co-mutation count driving prognosis. Because treatment intensity and other clinical confounders were not available, these survival associations are hypothesis-generating. Coagulation profiling remains inexpensive, widely accessible, and offers a practical window into disease biology that warrants prospective validation.

Risk of abnormal pregnancy outcome in carriers of balanced reciprocal translocations involving the Miller-Dieker syndrome (MDS) critical region in chromosome 17p13.3.

We studied the pedigrees of 14 families segregating a reciprocal translocation with one breakpoint in chromosome 17p13 and the other in the distal region of another autosome. All 14 were ascertained on the basis of an affected index case: 13 had Miller-Dieker syndrome (MDS) and one had dup(17p). In these 14 families, 38 balanced translocation carriers had 127 pregnancies, corrected for ascertainment bias by the exclusion of all index cases and carriers in the line of descent to the index cases. An abnormal phentotype, unbalanced chromosome constitution, or both, were found in 33 of 127 (26%) pregnancies: 15 of 127 (12%) had MDS and an unbalanced karyotype with del (17p); 9 of 127 (7%) had a less severe phenotype with dup(17p); and 9 were unstudied, although MDS with der(17) was usually suspected based on early death and multiple congenital anomalies. When unexplained pregnancy losses, including miscarriages and stillbirths, were excluded from the total, 33 of 99 (33%) pregnancies were phenotypically or genotypically abnormal. The overall risk of abnormal pregnancy outcome of 26% is in the upper range of the reported risk for unbalanced offspring of carrier parents assessed through liveborn aneuploid offspring [Gardner and Sutherland (1996), Oxford Univ. Press]. The risk increases to 33% when unexplained pregnancy losses are excluded from the total. These results are consistent with Daniel's model of risk based on the size of the unbalanced fragments [Daniel (1985) Clin Genet 28:216-224, Daniel et al. (1989) Am J Med Genet 31:14-53]. Pregnancy losses included 26 miscarriages (20%) and two stillbirths (2%) among the 127 pregnancies, similar to the respective population frequencies of 10-20% and 1%.

[Results of the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)obtained by the Polish Paediatric Leukaemia /Lymphoma Study Group].

Sixty children with MDS treated in six centres of the Polish Paediatric Leukaemia/Lymphoma Study Group in the period 1975-1999 were included in the study. In 20 children RAEB-T, in 13 RA, in 21 RAEB and in 6 CMML were diagnosed. Our own and literature data showed that BMT is the best therapy for children with MDS. We need a new comprehensive protocol for the diagnosis and treatment of children with MDS in Poland.

Nucleolar abnormalities--a defect of the nucleolar preribosome assembly--in ringed sideroblasts in refractory anaemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS) of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). An electron microscopic study.

Ringed sideroblasts were studied by means of transmission electron microscopy in patients suffering from refractory anaemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS) of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) to provide more information on the structural organization of nucleoli in these abnormal erythroblasts. For control of the electron microscopic observations nucleoli in erythroblasts were also visualized by two widely used cytochemical procedures for the demonstration of RNA and AgNOR proteins. In contrast to previously described ultrastructure of nucleoli in "normal" erythroblasts, nucleoli of ringed erythroblasts in RARS of MDS were frequently characterized by a reduced incidence or lack of dense ribonucleic acid (RNA) containing granular components. Since the dense RNA containing granular components represent preribosomes, such sideroblasts in RARS of MDS exhibit a further nucleolar abnormality, which reflects a severe alteration of the nucleolar ribosome assembly in these abnormal cells. On the other hand, the alteration of the preribosome assembly was not noted in early developmental stages of ringed sideroblasts such as proerythroblasts. In addition, nucleoli in advanced or terminal stages of few ringed sideroblasts also did not exhibit such nucleolar abnormality and thus confirm a great structural and functional variability of these cells. The defect of RNA containing structures in nucleoli of advanced and terminal stages of erythroblasts are in a hormony with the light microscopic cytochemistry, which demonstrated a significantly smaller incidence of micronucleoli in specimens stained for RNA than in those stained for AgNOR (silver stained nucleolus organizer region) proteins.

Occurrence of a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) during first-line 2-chloro-deoxyadenosine (2-CDA) treatment of a low-grade gastrointestinal MALT lymphoma. Case report and review of the literature.

While myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute leukemia (AL) are well-known secondary diseases after administration of chemotherapy, particularly alkylating agents, they have only rarely been reported in the context of purine analog treatment. In all cases there was an interval of several months before onset of the secondary disease and cytogenetic analyses showed typical chromosomal aberrations. We report the case of a 68-year old male Caucasian with low-grade lymphoma who developed a MDS during ongoing first-line treatment with the purine analog 2-CDA (Cladribine). Furthermore, a normal karyotype was present initially and at all consecutive control evaluations. Thus, this case represents another rare report of an evolution of purine analog treatment-associated MDS; the absence of cytogenetic aberrations might suggest a different mechanism in the pathogenesis of this secondary disease.

[A case of organizing pneumonia associated with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)].

A 53-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of atypical cells in the peripheral blood. Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) was diagnosed by bone marrow examination. Since he had a continuous dry cough, high fever, and air space consolidation in both lower lung fields, he was admitted to our hospital for further examination. Infectious disease, autoimmune disease, vasculitis and neoplasms were excluded. A transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) was performed at the right S(10), and histopathological examination of the specimen thus obtained suggested an organizing pneumonia (OP) associated with MDS. Oral prednisolone 30 mg was administered daily, and the symptoms and radiographic findings immediately improved. Accurate diagnosis of the pulmonary involvement associated with patients with MDS is sometimes difficult to make. However, either BOOP or OP should be considered as a differential diagnosis in case the patient presents with continuous coughing, high fever, and air space consolidation. Interventional examinations such as TBLB should be conducted to make a histological diagnosis if the patient's condition allows it.

[Coexistence of myeloma and primary myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)].

Coexistence of myeloma and MDS was noted in a patient without history of exposure to cytotoxic drugs. A 73-year-old man was admitted because of fever and dyspnea on exertion. A complete blood count revealed macrocytic anemia with hemoglobin 7.1 g/dl, RBC 191 x 10(4)/microliters and MCV 111.2 fl. WBC was 6,000/microliters, with normal differentials. Bone marrow showed erythroid hyperplasia with M/E ratio of 1.36. There were marked tri-lineage cellular abnormalities, which included megaloblastic changes, multinucleated erythroblasts, hypersegmentation of neutrophils, giant neutrophils, and giant platelets. Ringed-sideroblasts were demonstrated in 20% of the erythroblasts. These findings were compatible with MDS. Although plasma cells accounted for only 9.7% of the nucleated marrow cells, there were many immature plasma cells with inclusion bodies, and the patient showed lambda-light chain type monoclonal gammopathy with corresponding Bence Jones protein. Immuno-histochemical staining of the bone marrow biopsy specimen revealed monoclonal growth of lambda-positive plasma cells. A punched-out lesion of the skull eventually developed. These findings suggest existence of myeloma. There have been some reports of coexistence of MDS and myeloma; supporting the idea of pluripotent stem cell origin of the disease. This is the first documentation of such a case in Japan.

GM-CSF and low-dose cytosine arabinoside in high-risk, elderly patients with AML or MDS.

Priming of leukemic cells with cytokines may enhance the efficacy of cell-cycle chemotherapy. In this study, we utilized these synergistic effects of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF, sargramostim [Leukine]), hydroxyurea, and low-dose cytosine arabinoside to treat elderly patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). In a single-institution, retrospective study, we evaluated 94 treatments with concomitant hydroxyurea, cytosine arabinoside, and GM-CSF between the years of 1997 and 2003 in high-risk elderly patients with AML or MDS. A total of 80% of patients received all of the GM-CSF doses; 78% of patients received all of the cytosine arabinoside doses. Adverse events were minimal. No patient developed mucositis or alopecia. The most common adverse event was neutropenic fever, which was noted in 57% of patients. Twenty-one percent of patients remained neutropenic after treatment until death or relapse. Sixty-eight percent of patients reached an absolute neutrophil count of greater than 1000 microL in a median of 33.5 days. Our data show an overall response rate of 52%, with a complete response rate of 39% and a partial response rate of 13%. Overall, our study showed that low-dose cytosine arabinoside given by continuous infusion together with continuous infusion GM-CSF and hydroxyurea was well-tolerated and effective in treating elderly AML and MDS patients who were not eligible for standard induction therapy.

[Retrospective observation of curative effects on MDS refractory anemia with combination of all-trans retinoic acid, 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 and androgen].

This study was aimed to examine whether a combination of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) and androgen possesses the therapeutic value for the MDS-refractory anemia (MDS-RA), and to analyze the mechanisms in detail. 62 cases receiving a scheme of combination of ATRA, 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) and androgen (group A) were monitored. The remaining 33 cases (group B) were provided with vitamin supplementation, chalybeate drugs, and one or two of the combination. Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy were performed for collecting the specimens at the baseline and afterwards. The conditions of the patients were monitored by means of weekly complete blood counts and the monthly examination, including toxicity test, physical examination, electrocardiography, and biochemistry panel. The results showed that after treating for 8 weeks in group A, 4 out of 62 patients showed complete remission and 12 patients showed partial remission according to the defined response criteria, and 43 patients (69.35%) showed hematological improvement (HI). The further treatment for 16 out of 62 patients (25.81%), 13 failures (10 deaths, 2 RAEB and 1 RAEB-T) and 3 transformations (M(2), M(3), M(5)) with a median survival interval of 26.25 months, were observed and interrupted for some reasons. However, partial remission was observed only in 3 patients in group B, and HI amounted to 51.51%. Furthermore, the disease progression was observed in 12 out of 33 patients (36.36%) with a median survival interval of 16 months, 9 failures (including 6 deaths, 2 RAEB and 1 RAEB-T) and 3 transformations (M(2), M(3), M(4)). The overall ratios of survival for 3 and 5 years in group A, which received the combination, reached to 69.24% and 53.72% respectively, in comparison with 52.23% and 31.34% in the patients of group B (log-rank, P = 0.016). The following requirements, if were met, would be significant for prognosis: the combination regiment, no transformation, children, no complication, female, 90-120 g/L of hemoglobin concentration, normal cellular bone marrow and uni-cytopenias (P < 0.05). Moreover, Cox regression showed that therapy, transformation and age are all the independent factors (P < 0.05). It is concluded that the combination of above mentioned 3 drugs may be effective and safe treatment for the patients with MDS-RA. Its relevant mechanisms can be involved in the combination, that elicits a wide range of pharmacological effects, such as differentiation, anti-tumor-promotion, anti-apoptosis, anti-angiogenesis, anti-cachexia and immunoregulation.

[Altered expression of protooncogenes during clinical course in an AML case transformed from MDS].

The changes of expression of oncogenes in the mononuclear cells of MDS case was studied during his clinical course, in series. His bone marrow was considered to maintain its function partly in initial stage, since both peripheral blood and bone marrow responded to clinical episodes. However, his hematopoietic function was gradually impaired with the disease evolution to AML. We examined the expression of four oncogenes in the mononuclear cells of his three clinical stages, early RAEB-t, RAEB-t and AML, to study the cause of transformation from MDS to AML. Early RAEB-t cells expressed all oncogenes studied other than c-myb, while only c-myc was weakly observed in RAEB-t. AML cells expressed c-myc, c-jun and c-myb, except for c-fms. The expression of c-fms and c-jun of early RAEB-t was considered to reflect the monocytosis induced by infections, and the expressions of c-myb and c-myc of AML cells were regarded as one of malignant signs of tumor transformation. These findings suggest that the evolutional transformation of MDS to AML was affected by the altered expression of oncogenes.

[Serum adenosine deaminase and its isozyme activity in leukemia and MDS].

We studied the activity of serum adenosine deaminase (ADA) and its isozyme in 36 leukemic patients (16 ANLL, 11 ALL, and 9 CML) and 8 MDS. Isozyme was measured by erythro-9-(2-hydroxy-3-nonyl) adenine (EHNA) inhibitory assay. This assay was simple and reliable. The appearance rate of abnormally high ADA value were 81.24% for ANLL, 100% for ALL, 77.8% for CML and 37.5% for MDS. The ADA level became high when MDS turned into overt leukemia. In isozyme pattern, there was a clear difference between ANLL and ALL. The isozyme I/II ratio was significantly higher (p less than 0.001) in ALL than ANLL. Lymphoblastic crisis of CML also had a high isozyme I/II ratio. There was a correlation between isozyme I and absolute number of peripheral blasts in ALL (r = 0.768). When observed time sequentially, ADA and isozyme changed correlatively with the number of blasts counts. Serum ADA and its isozyme are useful parameters both for leukemic diagnosis and treatment.

Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).

In the literature 63 patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are reported who were treated with syngeneic or allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. 62 patients were prepared for BMT with TBI containing regimens or Busulfan/Cyclophosphamide. GvHD prophylaxis was heterogenous. 33/63 patients are alive and well between 4 and 132 months after BMT. 23/63 patients died due to GvHD (n = 6), interstitial pneumonitis (n = 6), other infections (n = 4), toxicity of the preparative regimen (n = 5) or graft failure (n = 2). 9/63 patients relapsed between 2 and 98 (in median 6) months after BMT. There seems to be a correlation between the subtype of the MDS and the relapse rate: only 1/18 patients with RA/RARS relapsed compared to 7/42 patients with RAEB/RAEB-T. These results indicate that marrow transplantation can induce long term survival and may result in cure of patients with MDS.
