After two terms as president of the American Nurses Association (ANA), Lucille A. Joel, EdD, RN, FAAN, keynote speaker for ANNA's 23rd National Symposium in Chicago, will share her thoughts on nursing's future role in health care. In this interview, conducted by ANNA President Marilyn L. Neff, MBA, RN, CNN, Dr. Joel discussed current and future issues such as unity among nursing, Nursing's Agenda for Health Care Reform, collective bargaining, equity in workplace settings, community nursing organizations, and nursing faculty shortages.

A surgeon and a soldier--an interview with Booker King, MD, FACS. Interview by George Dawson.

Periodically, for the past two years, the editorial staff of the Journal of the National Association has attempted to-for history's sake--highlight physicians of color. In this vein, and in light of the current hostile activities in the Persian Gulf, we felt it important we our bring readers, in this issue, the background and views of an African-American physician/soldier who served in the Iraqi theater of operations during the initial combat. Notwithstanding the current political machinations regarding the legitimacy of the conflict, his story is both insightful and inspiring because, in the end, it is soldiers and their families who bear the psychological and physical burden of armed conflicts. Finally, because of the history of privation that persons of African ancestry have had to endure in these lands, we feel it important that we, in these times, tell our story, on our terms. And Dr. Booker's story is one we feel truly proud to present. This interview was conducted by George Dawson, MD. He serves as editor of the Art in Medicine, History and Health Tidbit sections of the Journal of the National Medical Association.

Carolyn C. Roberts--researcher, health care administrator, American Hospital Association board member--is a role model for women health care executives. As president of Copley Hospital in Morrisville, Vermont, Carolyn has provided national leadership on health care reform and the management of small and rural hospitals. Her creative and positive approach to life coupled with her sensitivity to serving patients and the community with quality service provides inspiration to many health administrators, physicians, and community leaders. The following interview is a tribute to a dear friend and a great lady.

An unusual odyssey as a physician: an interview with Darrell Pone, MD. Interview by George Dawson.

This issue of the Journal of the National Medical Association highlights an interview with Dr. D. Pone. It reveals his journey in becoming a physician. It is both inspiring and quite troubling. It shows the remarkable effort he put into him becoming a practicing physician, from his undergraduate studies to his residency training and, ultimately, his initial practice opportunity. But it also reveals the concerns and travails he experienced while doing so, such as having to change his place of study as an undergraduate and his experience in the OR as a medical student, to name two.

An interview with J. Jarrett Clinton. Interview by Carmella A. Bacchino.

Medical effectiveness initiatives, outcomes research, and practice guidelines--the new buzz words for the 90s--will change the way health care services are delivered and allocated. The focal point for medical effectiveness and health services research for the federal government is the Public Health Service's newest agency, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. The agency is headed by J. Jarrett Clinton, MD, MPH, administrator, who also served as acting administrator since the creation of the agency in December 1989 until April 1991. In this interview, Dr. Clinton discusses the agency's responsibilities, his perspective on the agency's work, and the effect of health services research on the U.S. health care delivery system.

A unique dialysis quality management experience: an interview with novelist James A. Michener. Interview by Alex Rosenblum.

As a renal quality management nurse, I am always looking for new and interesting ways to share information and comparative data to educate and motivate fellow renal professionals. The intent of the sharing of the information is to stimulate quality activity. As a quality improvement project this interview with novelist James Michener, a patient with end stage renal disease, provides ANNA Journal readers with an increased understanding of the importance of providing quality care to the lives of people we care for. Recently, Michener provided an excellent opportunity to share his own experience in dealing with renal failure and dialysis therapy. His celebrity status and openness in discussing many issues related to his renal failure furnished a unique quality improvement opportunity.
