Pop-the-cork strategy in synthetic utilization of imines: stabilization by complexation and activation via liberation of the ligated species.

Treatment of trans-[PtCl(4)(RCN)(2)] (R = Me, Et) with ethanol allowed the isolation of trans-[PtCl(4)[E-NH[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)]. The latter were reduced selectively, by the ylide Ph(3)P[double bond]CHCO(2)Me, to trans-[PtCl(2)[E-NH[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)]. The complexed imino esters NH[double bond]C(R)OEt were liberated from the platinum(II) complexes by reaction with 2 equiv of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) in chloroform; the cationic complex [Pt(dppe)(2)]Cl(2) precipitates almost quantitatively from the reaction mixture and can be easily separated by filtration to give a solution of NH[double bond]C(R)OEt with a known concentration of the imino ester. The imino esters efficiently couple with the coordinated nitriles in trans-[PtCl(4)(EtCN)(2)] to give, as the dominant product, [PtCl(4)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)] containing a previously unknown linkage, i.e., ligated N-(1-imino-propyl)-alkylimidic acid ethyl esters. In addition to [PtCl(4)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(Et)OEt](2)], another compound was generated as the minor product, i.e., [PtCl(4)(EtCN)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(Et)OEt]], which was reduced to [PtCl(2)(EtCN)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(Et)OEt]], and this complex was characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The platinum(IV) complexes [PtCl(4)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)] are unstable toward hydrolysis and give EtOH and the acylamidine complexes trans-[PtCl(4)[Z-NH[double bond]C(Et)NHC(R)[double bond]O](2)], where the coordination to the Pt center results in the predominant stabilization of the imino tautomer NH[double bond]C(Et)NHC(R)[double bond]O over the other form, i.e., NH(2)C(Et)[double bond]NC(R)[double bond]O, which is the major one for free acylamidines. The structures of trans-[PtCl(4)[Z-NH[double bond]C(Et)NHC(R)[double bond]O](2)] (R = Me, Et) were determined by X-ray studies. The complexes [PtCl(4)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)] were reduced to the appropriate platinum(II) compounds [PtCl(2)[NH[double bond]C(Et)N[double bond]C(R)OEt](2)], which, similarly to the appropriate Pt(IV) compounds, rapidly hydrolyze to yield the acylamidine complexes [PtCl(2)[NH[double bond]C(Et)NHC(R)[double bond]O](2)] and EtOH. The latter acylamidine compounds were also prepared by an alternative route upon reduction of the corresponding platinum(IV) complexes. Besides the first observation of the platinum(IV)-mediated nitrile-imine ester integration, this work demonstrates that the application of metal complexes gives new opportunities for the generation of a great variety of imines (sometimes unreachable in pure organic chemistry) in metal-mediated conversions of organonitriles, the "storage" of imino species in the complexed form, and their synthetic utilization after liberation.

CD spectra of d-f heterobimetallic helicates with segmental di-imine ligands.

We have investigated the CD spectra of a series of enantiomerically pure heterobimetallic helicates, Lambda,Lambda-[LnCr(1)(3)](6+) (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb), which contain segmental di-imine ligands. For the mononuclear precursor of these helicates, Lambda-[Cr(1)(3)](3+), a positive exciton couplet was observed around 330 nm, as expected for a tris(di-imine) complex with this absolute configuration. The titration of Ln(III) ions into a solution of this complex leads to the formation of Lambda,Lambda-[LnCr(1)(3)](6+). During this process, the CD signal was observed to invert to give a signal which was negative at lower energies. We investigated the observed changes in the CD spectra using a ZINDO-based computational method which we have previously developed. We were able to show that the exciton coupling of the chromophores coordinated to the Cr and Ln ions give rise to CD signals of opposite phase, despite having the same nominal absolute configuration. Exciton coupling between chromophores located on different metal centers ("internuclear" exciton coupling) is also predicted to have a significant impact on the observed spectrum. We were able to "deconstruct" the observed CD spectra into a set of competing exciton coupling effects and show that the sign of these spectra does not correlate with the absolute configuration of the individual metal centers.

Diastereospecific and diastereoselective syntheses of Ruthenium(II) complexes using N,N' bidentate ligands aryl-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-amine ArNH-CH2-2-C5H4N and their oxidation to imine ligands.

Coordination of N,N' bidentate ligands aryl-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-amine ArNH-CH2-2-C5H4N 1 (Ar = 4-CH3-C6H4, 1a; 4-CH3O-C6H4, 1b; 2,6-(CH3)2-C6H3, 1c; 4-CF3-C6H4, 1d) to the moieties [Ru(bipy)2]2+, [Ru(eta5-C5H5)L]+ (L = CH3CN, CO), or [Ru(eta6-arene)Cl]2+ (arene = benzene, p-cymene) occurs under diastereoselective or diastereospecific conditions. Detailed stereochemical analysis of the new complexes is included. The coordination of these secondary amine ligands activates their oxidation to imines by molecular oxygen in a base-catalyzed reaction and hydrogen peroxide was detected as byproduct. The amine-to-imine oxidation was also observed under the experimental conditions of cyclic voltammetry measurements. Deprotonation of the coordinated amine ligands afforded isolatable amido complexes only for the ligand (1-methyl-1-pyridin-2-yl-ethyl)-p-tolyl-amine, 1e, which doesn't contain hydrogen atoms in a beta position relative to the N-H bond. The structures of [Ru(2,2'-bipyridine)2(1b)](PF6)2, 2b; [Ru(2,2'-bipyridine)(2)(1c)](PF6)2, 2c; trans-[RuCl2(COD)(1a)], 3; and [RuCl2(eta6-C6H6)(1a)]PF6, 4a, have been confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies.

A Search for pi/sigma Equilibria in Chiral Rhenium Imine Complexes of the Formula [(eta(5)-C(5)H(5))Re(NO)(PPh(3))(N(H)=C(CF(3))X)](+)TfO(-): Investigation of Electronic Effects upon the Binding Mode.

Reaction of the amido complex (eta(5)-C(5)H(5))Re(NO)(PPh(3))(&Numl;H(2)) (2) and hexafluoroacetone gives the methyleneamido complex (eta(5)-C(5)H(5))Re(NO)(PPh(3))(&Numl;=C(CF(3))(2)) (3, 58%). Addition of TfOH to 3 yields the sigma-imine complex [(eta(5)-C(5)H(5))Re(NO)(PPh(3))(eta(1)-N(H)=C(CF(3))(2))](+)TfO(-) (4, 96%). Similar reactions of 2 with trifluoroacetaldehyde and then TfOH give the sigma-imine complex [(eta(5)-C(5)H(5))Re(NO)(PPh(3))(eta(1)-N(H)=C(CF(3))H)](+)TfO(-) (5, 78%) and sometimes small amounts of the corresponding pi-trifluoroacetaldehyde complex. Reaction of 5 and t-BuO(-)K(+) gives the methyleneamido complex (eta(5)-C(5)H(5))Re(NO)(PPh(3))(&Numl;=C(CF(3))H) (6, 82%). The IR and NMR properties of 3-6 are studied in detail. The (13)C NMR spectra show C=N signals (157-142 ppm) diagnostic of sigma-binding modes. No evidence is observed for pi isomers of 4 or 5. Analogous O=C(CF(3))X complexes give exclusively pi isomers, and rationales are discussed. Reactions of 3or 6 with MeOTf and heteroatom electrophiles are also described.

Transition metal-catalyzed hetero-[5 + 2] cycloadditions of cyclopropyl imines and alkynes: dihydroazepines from simple, readily available starting materials.

The first example of a transition metal-catalyzed hetero-[5 + 2] cycloaddition reaction is described. Use of cyclopropyl imines as five-atom components, an alkyne as a two-carbon component, and a Rh(I) catalyst enables a new route to dihydroazepines. This new hetero-[5 + 2] cycloaddition works well with aldimines, ketimines, and with substituted cyclopropanes and affords the desired dihydroazepines in excellent yields as single regioisomers. Use of serial imine formation/aza-[5 + 2] cycloaddition generates the desired dihydroazepines in one operation from three commercially available starting materials. The reaction has been scaled to give gram quantities of dihydroazepine.

Chiral phosphine lewis bases catalyzed asymmetric aza-Baylis-Hillman reaction of N-sulfonated imines with activated olefins.

In the aza-Baylis-Hillman reaction of N-sulfonated imines (N-arylmethylidene-4-methylbenzenesulfonamides and others) with methyl vinyl ketone, ethyl vinyl ketone, and acrolein, we found that, in the presence of a catalytic amount of chiral phosphine Lewis base such as (R)-2'-diphenylphosphanyl-[1,1']binaphthalenyl-2-ol LB1 (10 mol %) and molecular sieve 4A, the corresponding aza-Baylis-Hillman adducts could be obtained in good yields with good to high ee (70-95% ee) at low temperature (approximately -30 to -20 degrees C) or at room temperature in THF, respectively. In CH2Cl2 upon heating at 40 degrees C, the aza-Baylis-Hillman reaction of N-sulfonated imines with phenyl acrylate or naphthyl acrylate gave the adducts in good to high yields (60-97%) with moderate ee (52-77%). The mechanistic insight has been investigated by 31P and 1H NMR spectroscopic measurements. The key enolate intermediate, which has been stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding, has been observed by 31P and 1H NMR spectroscopy. An effective bifunctional Lewis base and Bronsted acid phosphine Lewis base system has been disclosed in this catalytic, asymmetric aza-Baylis-Hillman reaction.

Kinetic resolutions of azomethine imines via copper-catalyzed [3 + 2] cycloadditions.

An effective method has been developed for the kinetic resolution of racemic azomethine imines via [3 + 2] cycloadditions with alkynes catalyzed by a chiral copper complex. Efficient kinetic resolution is observed for a variety of N1 and C5 substituents on the dipole, thereby furnishing a wide array of useful enantioenriched azomethine imines, which can readily be transformed into monocyclic and bicyclic pyrazolidinones.

Brønsted acid-catalyzed imine amidation.

A new method for the Brønsted acid-catalyzed addition of amide nucleophiles to imines to produce protected aminal products is described. Simple Brønsted acids (phenyl phosphinic acid and trifluoromethanesulfonimide) were shown to be excellent catalysts, providing high yields of the aminal product. A catalytic asymmetric imine amidation using sulfonamides as nucleophiles was successful when a hindered biaryl phosphoric acid catalyst derived from 2,2'-diphenyl-[3,3'-biphenanthrene]-4,4'-diol (VAPOL) was used. Excellent yields and enantioselectivities were found in these additions (up to 99% ee).

Condensation of laterally lithiated o-methyl and o-ethyl benzamides with imines mediated by (-)-sparteine. Enantioselective synthesis of tetrahydroisoquinolin-1-ones.

The first asymmetric synthesis of tetrahydroisoquinolin-1-ones using a (-)-sparteine-mediated lateral metalation-imine addition sequence to furnish 3-phenyl tetrahydroisoquinolinones 3a with enantioselectivities up to 81% ee is described (Scheme 4). For amide 7b, imine addition products 10 and 11 have been obtained with high diastereoselectivities (91-97% de) and enantioselectivities (91-98% ee) (Scheme 8).

A theoretical study of the reaction between cyclopentadiene and protonated imine derivatives: a shift from a concerted to a stepwise molecular mechanism.

The reaction between cyclopentadiene and protonated pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde imine derivatives has been studied by using Hartree-Fock (HF) and B3LYP methods together with the 6-31G basis set. The molecular mechanism is stepwise along an inverted energy profile. This results from the protonation on both nitrogen atoms of the imine group and the pyridine framework. The first step corresponds to the nucleophilic attack of cyclopentadiene on the electron-poor carbon atom of the iminium cation group to give an acyclic cation intermediate, and the second step is associated with the ring closure of this intermediate via the formation of a C-N single bond yielding the final cycloadduct. Two reactive channels have been characterized corresponding to the endo and exo approach modes of the cyclopentadiene to the iminium cation. The role of the pyridium cation substituent and the nitrogen position (ortho, meta, and para) along the reaction pathway has been also considered. Solvent effects (dichloromethane) by means of a continuum model have been taken into account to model the experimental environment.

Synthesis of thiadiazole, dithietane, and imine derivatives of the [1,2]dithiolo[1,4]thiazine ring system.

We report the synthesis of some new polysulfur-nitrogen heterocyclics by cycloaddition reactions to the thioketo group of readily available tricyclic 1,2-dithiole-3-thiones. Thus treatment of bis[1,2]dithiolo[1,4]thiazine ketothione 1 with diaryl nitrile imines generated from hydrazonoyl chlorides 2a-g gave [1,3,4]thiadiazolylidenyl[1,2]dithiolo[1,4]thiazines 4a-g in high yield. Compounds 4a-f, bearing the same substituents in both aryl groups, were stable but the analogous 4g,h with a p-nitrophenyl group on carbon gave the bis[1,2]dithiolo[1,4]thiazine dione 9, probably by cycloreversion and hydrolysis during chromatography. Treatment of 1, the bis[1,2]dithiolopyrrole ketothione 13, and dithione 12 with ethoxycarbonyl azide 11 gave imines 12 and 15 and bisimine 16, respectively, by an alternative fragmentation of the initial cycloadduct in which the 1,2-dithiole ring is retained. Reaction of 1 with TosMIC gave the imino-1,3-dithietane 17.

Direct synthesis of imines from gem-dibromomethylaryl derivatives: application to unsymmetrically substituted bipyridine frameworks.

An efficient methodology for the one-pot synthesis of imines is described starting from gem-dibromomethylaryl compounds and primary amines. The synthesis was applied to various aliphatic mono- and polyamines as well as to electron-rich anilines. The protocol was extended to 6-bromo-5'-dibromomethyl-2,2'-bipyridine to afford the corresponding imines. With n-propyl- and n-decylamine, further conversion, in three steps, to the corresponding 6-carboxy-5'-alkylaminomethyl-2,2'-bipyridine derivatives was selectively achieved, providing new tridentate ligands that may find interesting applications for the complexation of lanthanide(III) cations in their anionic or zwitterionic form.

Synthesis of octahydroquinolines through the Lewis acid catalyzed reaction of vinyl allenes and imines.

The reaction of vinyl allenes with imines under Lewis acid catalysis has been explored. Vinyl allenes in which the allenic portion of the molecule is tri- or tetrasubstituted gave octahydroquinoline derivatives as single isomers together with a minor compound formed by an ene reaction of the imine with the allene. Compounds in which the allene is 1,3-disubstituted do not react under the conditions assayed.

Novel synthesis of gem-dichloroaziridines from imines via the KF/Al2O3-promoted generation of dichlorocarbene from chloroform.

KF/Al(2)O(3) was found to be an efficient base for the reaction of imines with chloroform in acetonitrile to give gem-dichloroaziridines 2 in moderate to high yields. The KF/Al(2)O(3)-promoted dichloroaziridination can be carried out with simple workup, tolerates a variety of functional groups present in the imines, and proceeds smoothly with a smaller amount of carbene source.

Highly Enantioselective Synthesis of 1,3-Oxazolidin-2-imine Derivatives by Asymmetric Cycloaddition Reactions of Vinyloxiranes with Unsymmetrical Carbodiimides Catalyzed by Palladium(0) Complexes.

4-Vinyl-1,3-oxazoilidin-2-imine derivatives have been synthesized by cycloaddition reactions of 2-vinyloxiranes with unsymmetrical carbodiimides catalyzed by palladium(0) complexes in excellent total isolated yields. After reaction two compounds were always formed, one of which was isolated as the major product. A bulky alkyl group on one of the nitrogen atoms of the carbodiimide enhanced the product ratio in favor of the N-aryl-3-alkyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2-imine. Highly enantioselective cycloadducts (up to >99% ee) were formed by using TolBINAP as the chiral phosphine ligand, in THF at ambient temperatures. The enantiodetermination is believed to be dependent on nucleophilic attack of the anionic nitrogen of the carbodiimide due to the steric interaction of the carbodiimide substituents with the chiral phosphine ligand.

Origins of the Stereodivergent Outcome in the Staudinger Reaction between Acyl Chlorides and Imines.

Calculations using density functional theory (DFT, B3LYP/6-31G level) provide an explanation for the stereodivergent outcome observed in the Staudinger reaction between acyl chlorides and imines to form 2-azetidinones (beta-lactams). When the ketene is formed prior to the cycloaddition stages, preferential or exclusive formation of cis stereomers is predicted. When the imine reacts directly with the acyl chloride, the step that determines the stereochemical outcome of the reaction is an intramolecular S(N)2 displacement. Under these conditions, preferential or exclusive formation of trans stereomers is predicted, in good agreement with the experimental evidence available. It is found that both competitive processes are subjected to torquoelectronic effects. In addition, the reported calculations suggest that in both cases the polarity of the solvent enhances the diastereomeric excess of the reaction.
