The foster care clinic: a community program to identify treatment needs of children in foster care.

A community-based multiagency and multidisciplinary clinic was developed to perform comprehensive evaluations of preschool children in foster care. One hundred thirteen children, ages 1 month to 6 years old, were seen during the first 2 years. Forty-seven percent of the children were known to the social service agency from birth; however, the mean age at placement was 19 months. Fifty-seven percent of the children were in their first foster home at the time of their initial evaluation, but 17% has already been placed in three or more homes. Behavioral problems were found in 39% of the children, and chronic medical problems in 35%. Sixty-one percent of the children were delayed in one or more portions of the developmental assessment. Developmental delay was associated with older age. Sixty percent of the children with developmental delays were not involved in any community educational or therapeutic program, although they had been in foster care for a mean of 6 months. Because of the high mobility of this population, continuity of care by social workers, foster parents, and physicians is hard to achieve. The evaluation model developed by the clinic appears to facilitate the identification of children in need of additional services, enhances cooperation between various community agencies, and provides a constant site for monitoring the status and progress of children in foster care.

Determinants for the use of psychotropics among nursing home residents.

PURPOSE: To characterise the prescription pattern of psychotropics in Danish nursing homes and to identify diagnostic, behavioural, cognitive and performance characteristics associated with prevalent psychotropic drug use. METHODS: Prescribed daily medication was recorded from nurses' files. Based on the Anatomical Therapeutical Chemical (ATC) classification index, psychotropics were categorised into neuroleptics, benzodiazepines and antidepressants. Two hundred and eighty-eight residents were diagnosed using the GMS-AGECAT. One hundred and eighteen staff members were interviewed about the residents's Activities of Daily Living (ADL), behavioural problems (Nursing Home Behavior Problem Scale), orientation, communication skills and if the resident had any psychiatric disorder. Multiple logistic regression was used to select the items that determined the use of psychotropics. RESULTS: Fifty-six percent of the residents received a psychotropic, 21% received neuroleptics, 38% received benzodiazepines and 24% received antidepressants. In the multivariate analysis, staff assessment of the resident's mental health was a determinant for the use of all types of specific psychotropics, whereas a GMS-AGECAT diagnosis only determined the use of neuroleptics. Behavioural problems were a determinant for the use of neuroleptics and the use of benzodiazepines irrespective of the psychiatric diagnosis of the resident. Use of antidepressants was associated with male gender and increasing age. CONCLUSIONS: Staff perceptions of psychiatric morbidity and norms have a greater impact on the prescription of psychotropics than standardised clinical criteria.

Scent marking strategies of New World primates.

This paper reviews recent findings on scent-marking behavior in wild New World primates. These findings are used to examine three functional hypotheses: territoriality, regulation of social and reproductive dominance, and mating competition/mate attraction. Available data provide little evidence for a territorial function of scent-marking behavior in New World primates. Evidence for a function in the regulation of social and reproductive dominance is ambiguous. The patterns of scent marking found so far (i.e., rates of scent marking according to sex and social or reproductive status, and the spatial distribution of scent marks), and the sparse information on responses to scent marks are consistent with a hypothesized function in intrasexual competition and intersexual mate choice. Suggestions for future research are made.

Ecological distinctions between sympatric species of Saguinus and Sciurus.

Tamarins are small New World monkeys that have been described as "squirrellike." Squirrels, along with bats and birds, are the taxa most likely to utilize resources similar to those used by primates in the tropical forest canopy. In this paper we compare differences in ecology, diet, locomotion, and habitat utilization between sympatric populations of tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) and tree squirrels (Sciurus granatensis) in Panama. Data presented indicate that although there is some degree of resource overlap, patterns of habitat utilization differ significantly. Rather than being "squirrellike," the Panamanian tamarin exhibits a pattern of locomotor and feeding behavior consistent with that found in other arboreal primates.

Impact of aerobic training on fitness and quality of life in multiple sclerosis.

Fifty-four multiple sclerosis (MS) patients were randomly assigned to exercise (EX) or nonexercise (NEX) groups. Before and after 15 weeks of aerobic training, aspects of fitness including maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max), isometric strength, body composition, and blood lipids were measured. Daily activities, mood, fatigue, and disease status were measured by the Profile of Mood States (POMS), Sickness Impact Profile (SIP), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and neurological examination. Training consisted of 3 x 40-minute sessions per week of combined arm and leg ergometry. Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores were unchanged, except for improved bowel and bladder function in the EX group. Compared with baseline, the EX group demonstrated significant increases in VO2max, upper and lower extremity strength, and significant decreases in skinfolds, triglyceride, and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). For the EX group, POMS depression and anger scores were significantly reduced at weeks 5 and 10, and fatigue was reduced at week 10. The EX group improved significantly on all components of the physical dimension of the SIP and showed significant improvements for social interaction, emotional behavior, home management, total SIP score, and recreation and past times. No changes were observed for EX or NEX groups on the FSS. Exercise training resulted in improved fitness and had a positive impact on factors related to quality of life.

Phenotypic discrimination between thymic and extrathymic CD4-CD8- and CD4+CD8+ porcine T lymphocytes.

The composition of the T lymphocyte population in swine is special in that in addition to the CD4-CD8+ subpopulations, CD4-CD8- and CD4+CD8- and CD4+CD8+ subpopulations are prominent in the peripheral circulating as well as in the resident T lymphocyte pools. Since the same phenotypes are characteristic of thymic populations, it was asked whether the unusual distribution in swine may result from an emigration of thymic precursor phenotypes to the periphery. This explanation was refuted, as all thymic subpopulations were found to express CD1, albeit with differences in antigen density, whereas all extrathymic subpopulations lack CD1. The cellular distribution of CD2 in swine is without precedent among all species studied. Whereas in sheep and cattle the extrathymic CD4-CD8- subpopulation is known to entirely lack CD2 and to have a low propensity for homing to lymphoid tissues, the CD4-CD8- subpopulation in swine splits into CD2+ and CD2- subsets, both of which do reside in lymphoid tissues. While CD2+CD4-CD8- T lymphocytes are rare in the circulating pool, this subset accumulates in spleen and lymph nodes. This may indicate a role for CD2 in homing. Thus the species swine is immunologically unique, not only because of having CD1-CD2+CD4+CD8+ T lymphocytes in the periphery, but also with regard to subdivision and homing behavior of its CD4-CD8- T lymphocyte subpopulation.

CD73 mediates lymphocyte binding to vascular endothelium in inflamed human skin.

Inflammatory diseases of the skin are characterized by abundant lymphocytic infiltrates at the site of inflammation, which are critical for the perpetuation of chronic disease. Lymphocytes gain entry to the site of inflammation by the use of adhesion molecules, which recognize their counterparts on vascular endothelial cells. CD73 is a lymphocyte differentiation antigen, which has recently been shown to mediate lymphocyte binding to cultured endothelial cells. Here, we have examined its expression and function in inflammatory situations using inflammatory skin diseases as a model. In several idiopathic and allergic disorders of the skin, a vast majority of the skin-infiltrating lymphocytes were found to express CD73. However, on the circulating lymphocytes of these patients the expression of CD73 does not differ from that of healthy individuals. Of the peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of patients, 13 % are CD73+; of these, 9 % express the cutaneous lymphocyte antigen (CLA), 32 % express CD45RO, and 86 % are L-selectin+. Only 1% of PBL express both CLA and CD73. In contrast, most skin-infiltrating lymphocytes express both molecules, which led us to investigate the role of CD73 in the skin-homing behavior of these cells. In the frozen-section adhesion assay, when PBL were treated with the anti-CD73 monoclonal antibody 4G4, their binding to the vascular endothelium in inflamed skin was inhibited by 70 %. Taken together, our results demonstrate that CD73+ lymphocytes preferentially accumulate into inflamed skin and, most importantly, that CD73 is involved in lymphocyte binding to vessels in inflamed skin. In the future, these findings may offer new means to treat inflammatory disorders of the skin.

Siblings of autistic children: their adjustment and performance at home and in school.

The research examined the adjustment of siblings of autistic children. The relationship between sex and family size of the siblings and the sibling's performance on achievement, self-concept, home behavior, and school behavior was examined. Six 2 x 2 analyses of variance were completed. Results indicated that there was little variance as a function of sex or family size. Overall the sibling's performance was not suggestive of needing special intervention. These results are discussed in terms of how they relate to previous findings and implications for clinical intervention and future research.

Thorax vibrations of a stingless bee ( Melipona seminigra). I. No influence of visual flow.

An important question in stingless bee communication is whether the thorax vibrations produced by foragers of the genus Melipona upon their return to the nest contain spatial information about food sources or not. As previously shown M. seminigra is able to use visual flow to estimate flight distances. The present study investigated whether foraging bees encode the visually measured distance in their thorax vibrations. Bees were trained to collect food in flight tunnels lined with a black-and-white pattern on their side walls and floor, which substantially influenced the image motion they experienced. When the bees had collected inside the tunnels the temporal pattern of their vibrations differed significantly from the pattern after collecting in a natural environment. These changes, however, were not associated with the visual flow experienced inside the tunnel. Bees collecting in tunnels offering little visual flow (stripes parallel to flight direction) modified their vibrations similarly to bees collecting in tunnels with high image motion (cross stripes). A higher energy expenditure due to drastically reduced flight velocities inside the tunnel is suggested to be responsible for changes in the thorax vibrations. The bees' vibrations would thus reflect the overall energetic budget of a foraging trip.

Thorax vibrations of a stingless bee ( Melipona seminigra). II. Dependence on sugar concentration.

Using a laser vibrometer we studied the influence of the food's sugar concentration on different parameters of the thorax vibrations produced by foragers of Melipona seminigra during trophallaxis in the nest. The concentrations tested (20-70% sugar w/w) were within the biologically relevant range. They substantially influenced different parameters of the thorax vibrations. An increase of energy gains at the food source due to an increased sugar concentration was followed by an increase of both the pulse duration and the duty cycle and by a decrease of the pause duration between two subsequent pulses. These findings further support the hypothesis that the temporal pattern of the thorax vibrations reflects the energy budget of a foraging trip rather than food source distance. Likewise, the steep increase of pulse duration variability with sugar concentration is hard to reconcile with the assumption that pulse duration conveys reliable information about food source distance when bees collect at high-quality food sources.

Ant navigation en route to the goal: signature routes facilitate way-finding of Gigantiops destructor.

We investigated in laboratory conditions how foragers of the tropical ant Gigantiops destructor develop individually distinctive landmark routes. Way-finding along a familiar route involved the recognition of at least two locations, nest and feeding site, and the representation of spatial relations between these places. Familiar visual landmarks were important both at the beginning and at the end of the foraging journey. A motor routine guided the ants at the start of their foraging path towards the first landmarks, which they learnt to pass consistently on the same side, before taking the next direction. At the last stage of the route, landmark recognition allowed them to pinpoint their preferred feeding site without using distant cues or odometric information. By contrast, ants en route to the goal were not systematically guided by a stereotyped sequence of snapshots recalled at each corresponding stage of the route. Each ant slalomed in an idiosyncratic distinctive way around different midway landmarks from a foraging excursion to the next, which induced a variability of the path shapes in their intermediate parts. By reducing the number of landmark recognition-triggered responses, this economical visuomotor strategy may be helpful in the Amazonian forest where many prominent landmarks are alike.

Experimental confirmation of aggressive mimicry by a coral reef fish.

A number of potential mimetic relationships between coral reef fishes have been described, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Similarities in colour between species have often been attributed to aggressive mimicry (where predators resemble models in order to deceive prey), however this has not been tested. The fang blenny, Plagiotremus rhinorhynchos is a specialized predator that feeds on tissues of other fishes. Some individuals appear to mimic the harmless cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus in order to deceive fish visiting cleaning stations, thereby increasing access to food. In this study, the ecological relationship between the mimic and model was examined at Kimbe Bay (Papua New Guinea) and the hypothesis that colour similarities represent facultative aggressive mimicry was experimentally evaluated. Some juveniles exhibited a striking resemblance to the juvenile colouration of the cleaner wrasse, but only when in close proximity to the wrasse and only when similar in size. As predicted for mimics, P. rhinorhynchos co-occurred with L. dimidiatus, but was rare relative to the model. Among site comparisons showed that the abundance of mimetic type blennies was positively correlated with the abundance of juvenile cleaner wrasses. Approximately 50% of all P. rhinorhynchos were found </=1 m from the nearest L. dimidiatus, a distance significantly shorter than expected if they were not associated. A cleaner wrasse removal experiment was carried out to test whether the colour displayed by the blenny and its foraging success were contingent upon the presence of a model. In all cases, removal of the model prompted a rapid colour change to a general non-mimetic colouration in P. rhinorhynchos. Removal of L. dimidiatus also resulted in a approximately 20% reduction in the average foraging success of the blenny compared to controls, supporting the hypothesis that the blenny is a facultative aggressive mimic of the cleaner wrasse.

School-based mental health services for children living in high poverty urban communities.

Studied the effectiveness of a school-based mental health service model, PALS (Positive Attitudes toward Learning in School), focused on increasing initial and ongoing access to services, and promoting improved classroom and home behavior for children referred for Disruptive Behavior Disorder (DBD) from three high poverty urban elementary schools. Classrooms were randomly assigned to PALS or referral to a neighborhood mental health clinic, with children identified by teacher referral and follow-up parent andeher ratings. Results indicated significant service engagement and retention for PALS (n=60) versus families referred to clinic (n=30), with over 80% of PALS families retained in services for 12 months. PALS services were correlated with positive changes in children's behavior as rated by parents, and with improvements in children's academic performance as rated by teachers. Implications for the design and delivery of mental health services for children and families living in high-poverty urban communities are discussed.

Substrate soiled by an unfamiliar conspecific modifies opioid activity in mice placed in novel environments.

Naloxone induces behavioural changes in rodents exposed to novel environments, indicating the involvement of endogenous opioid mechanisms in these situations. The present study investigated whether soiled sawdust substrate from the cage of an unfamiliar, isolated, male conspecific modifies the effect of naloxone (0.5 or 12.5 mg/kg) upon behaviour of mice in an open field test situation. There was little difference between the effects of naloxone upon the frequency of acts or postures shown in the soiled and unsoiled environments. Cluster analysis of the activities according to their position and frequency in behavioural sequences, revealed variations in behavioural organisation in these two situations in control animals, and differential responses to naloxone administration. The data are discussed in terms of an involvement in behaviour of opioid mechanisms which can be modified by non-painful, biologically-relevant, aversive stimuli such as unfamiliar, conspecific-soiled substrates.

Effects of opiate agonists and antagonists on aggressive encounters and subsequent opioid-induced analgesia, activity and feeding responses in male mice.

The effects of peripheral administration of the mu, kappa and sigma opiate agonists, levorphanol (1.0 mg/kg), U-50,488 (1.0 and 10.0 mg/kg), (+/-) SKF-10,047 (10.0 and 30.0 mg/kg), respectively, as well as the delta opiate antagonists, ICI-154,129 (10.0 mg/kg), and the prototypic antagonist, naloxone (1.0 mg/kg), on the agonistic behaviors and subsequent analgesic, locomotory and ingestive responses of subordinate mice were examined in a "resident-intruder" paradigm. The latter behaviors were examined in both defeated and nondefeated mice that had received an equivalent level of aggression. The mu and delta opiate antagonists decreased, while the mu, kappa, and sigma opiate agonists selectively increased aggressive behavior (number of bouts of aggressive interactions, number of bites to defeat, time to defeat). Both naloxone and the delta antagonist suppressed defeat- and aggression-induced activity and feeding, while only naloxone blocked the analgesic response. Levorphanol enhanced, U-50,488 had variable dose related effects, and SKF-10,047 decreased the defeat and aggressive-induced responses. These results indicate that various opioid systems and opiate receptors are differentially involved in the mediation of various components of the agonistic encounters and in the expression of the consequences of social conflict and defeat-induced opioid activation.
