[Home care services: working together of interdependent family and professional assistants' networks].

1. Definition of one population need homecare for instance get assistance by a family's helper. 2. What are the diseases of that population, what about reductions of the mobility, what are the needs in terms of helping or assistance for: --the daily works, --the heavy household activities, --the essential activities in case of illness. 3. If the patients are not able to do one or several works, who help? Are there one or several professionals or/and one or several members of the social environment? 4. Are all the patients helped in the same way by the same helpers, for the same works? What kind of persons help the patients and for what work? 5. Is the situation similarly for the totality of the population? 6. No, there are many differences, for instance according to the patient living alone or not. 7. Evaluation of the cost for the patient of homecare.

[Health care needs, brain functional ability, social behavior and social attendant circumstances of elderly patients in community and institutionalized geriatric care in the city of Zurich].

All aged persons being helped by community nursing-services, the house-helper service, the housekeeper service, or living in a home for the aged or in an apartment for seniors in a representative area of the city of Zurich are compared to all patients in nursing-homes of the city. This study included the size of social network measured by the number of different regular visitors, the number of different medications taken daily, the cognitive abilities measured by the Mini Mental Status, the activities of daily living and the social skills rated by the care-givers as well as the intensity of the care given. The groups were similar in age and sex-distribution but the nursing-home patients differed significantly in all other parameters from the others. In contrast, no significant differences could be found between persons receiving care in their homes and those in institutions for the aged.

ADL-reduction and need for technical aids among 70-year-olds. From the population study of 70-year-olds in Göteborg.

Six hundred and nineteen persons from the population study of 70-year-olds "The intervention study of the elderly in Göteborg" (IVEG) were examined. They were interviewed in their home environment concerning their ability to manage activities of daily living (ADL), and the definition "ADL-reduction" is based on seven of these ADL-measurements. One third of the 70-year-old population had reduced ADL-capability, some only slightly. Joint disorders, paresis and congestive heart failure were the most common problems among the ADL-reduced subjects. Forty-three per cent of the ADL-reduced subjects (19% of total) received help with their personal care and/or housekeeping. One third had technical aid, mostly quite simple and inexpensive. Half were provided with new technical aids. The need for technical aids and home help service was noted and intervention undertaken as and when necessary. The needs were correlated to physical activity and performance in functional tests. The results do not illustrate the occurrence of handicap but are aimed at illustrating the special needs that elderly people may have in their normal surroundings.
