[The effect of tefestrol on the secretion of luteinizing hormone from the hypophysis].

The effect of tefestrol on the content of luteinising hormone in blood and hypophysis in female and male rats was studied on the basis of the radioimmunological assays. It was shown that administration of tefestrol to the female rats depending on the preparation dose and the time of administration during the estrous cycle can produce an increase and a decrease of luteinising hormone content in the material under study. In the male rats tefestrol induced a stable elevation of blood gonadotropine level. The results obtained suggest that tefestrol may be used as a stimulant of the reproductive function and also as a contraceptive depending on the dose and the functional state of the reproductive system during the treatment.

Stability of prothrombin times in sheep dosed with natural and synthetic anticoagulants.

Sheep were dosed with natural and synthetic anticoagulants to prolong prothrombin time (PT) in the one stage PT test. The stability of subsequent values of PT of up to 40 seconds was measured at various times over a 24 hour period in plasma and whole blood stored at 0, 20 and 30 degrees C, representing ideal to unsuitable conditions of sample preparation and storage. In contrast to cautions in the literature, the various treatments had little influence on PT. These findings should encourage the use of PT in field diagnosis and research in sheep by surmounting the tenet of the difficulty in effectively preserving blood samples for PT determinations.

Effect of Foeniculum vulgare Mill. seed extract on the genital organs of male and female rats.

Following the oral administration of acetone extract of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) seeds for 15 days is male rats, total protein concentration was found to be significantly decreased in testes and vas deferens and increased in seminal vesicles and prostate gland. There was a decrease in activities of acid and alkaline phosphatase in all these regions, except that alkaline phosphatase was unchanged in vasa. In female rats, oral administration of the extract for 10 days led to vaginal cornification and oestrus cycle. While moderate doses caused increase in weight of mammary glands, higher doses increased the weight of oviduct, endometrium, myometrium, cervix and vagina also. The results confirm the oestrogenic activity of the seed extract.
