Use of Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) and Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) in toxicity tests on different industrial effluents in Taiwan.

In Taiwan, aquatic toxicity tests for industrial effluents are not required for discharge permits. However, relying on traditional chemical and physical characteristics of an effluent to monitor and regulate such discharges to manage water quality of a receiving water is insufficient. In this study, we used two fish species, Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) and tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), and three toxic endpoints, including acute and subacute toxicity, to determine toxicity of seven different types of industrial effluents. Prior to the study, two reference toxicants were tested on two fish species. The LC50s of CdCl2 for tilapia and medaka juveniles were 29.6 +/- 15.3 mg/L and 2.2 +/- 1.2 mg/L, respectively. The sensitivity of medaka embryo mortality and hatching inhibition to CdCl2 were about the same, with the LC50 and EC50 of 0.3 +/- 0.1 mg/L and 0.1 +/- 0.1 mg/L, respectively. The LC50s for tilapia and medaka juveniles to sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were 19.7 +/- 10.6 mg/L and 12.5 +/- 5.9 mg/L. The medaka embryo was less sensitive to SDS than to CdCl2. The embryo's LC50 for SDS was 5.8 +/- 2.8 mg/L and the hatching inhibition EC50 was 1.3 +/- 1.1 mg/L. Results of toxicity tests on different effluents showed that the electroplating effluent was the most toxic, followed by acrylonitrile manufacturing and pulp/paper mill discharges. The LC50s of the electroplating effluent to different assays were in the range of several percents of the whole effluent. The pulp/paper effluent was toxic only to the medaka embryo. The rest of the industrial effluents tested showed either moderate or no toxicity to the animals.

Development of an automated electroplater and dosimetry system for the electrodeposition and quality control of radioactive stents.

An automated electrodeposition system for the preparation of radioactive stents and an automated dosimetry system based on the Optidos beta-scintillation detector for the quality control of the radioactive stents have been developed. Custom-made application software programmed in Visual Basic was used to control liquid flow and electroplating currents in the electrodeposition system, and to run the dual motion actuator and radiation detector for the automated measurement of the radioactivity distribution. The automation of the electroplating process increased the precision, ease, repeatability, and radiation safety of the process. The radioactive beta-emitting 188Re stents might be useful for the treatment of patients with inoperable lung cancer.

Oxidation behavior of surface-modified titanium for titanium-ceramic restorations.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Titanium-ceramic bonding is an unsolved problem for the current use of titanium-ceramic restorations. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to characterize oxide formation on titanium surfaces at porcelain sintering temperatures and to determine the effect of chromium coating methods on titanium oxide formation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sputter coating and electroplating methods of chromium application were compared and combined. RESULTS: Porous, weak titanium oxide formation on uncoated samples was demonstrated at porcelain sintering temperatures. Groups with chromium coating as an oxygen diffusion barrier exhibited lower oxidation rates, except samples coated by sputtering alone. Temperature effect was found to have the greatest significance on titanium oxidation rate. The overall lowest oxidation rate was located in the group that had chromium coating by the combined coating method and was oxidized at 750 degrees C. CONCLUSION: The electroplating method requires further investigation and development so that a uniform chromium layer can be deposited on titanium.

Comparison of three sampling and analytical methods for the determination of airborne hexavalent chromium.

A field study was conducted with the goal of comparing the performance of three recently developed or modified sampling and analytical methods for the determination of airborne hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The study was carried out in a hard chrome electroplating facility and in a jet engine manufacturing facility where airborne Cr(VI) was expected to be present. The analytical methods evaluated included two laboratory-based procedures (OSHA Method ID-215 and NIOSH Method 7605) and a field-portable method (NIOSH Method 7703). These three methods employ an identical sampling methodology: collection of Cr(VI)-containing aerosol on a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filter housed in a sampling cassette, which is connected to a personal sampling pump calibrated at an appropriate flow rate. The basis of the analytical methods for all three methods involves extraction of the PVC filter in alkaline buffer solution, chemical isolation of the Cr(VI) ion, complexation of the Cr(VI) ion with 1,5-diphenylcarbazide, and spectrometric measurement of the violet chromium diphenylcarbazone complex at 540 nm. However, there are notable specific differences within the sample preparation procedures used in three methods. To assess the comparability of the three measurement protocols, a total of 20 side-by-side air samples were collected, equally divided between a chromic acid electroplating operation and a spray paint operation where water soluble forms of Cr(VI) were used. A range of Cr(VI) concentrations from 0.6 to 960 microg m(-3), with Cr(VI) mass loadings ranging from 0.4 to 32 microg, was measured at the two operations. The equivalence of the means of the log-transformed Cr(VI) concentrations obtained from the different analytical methods was compared. Based on analysis of variance (ANOVA) results, no statistically significant differences were observed between mean values measured using each of the three methods. Small but statistically significant differences were observed between results obtained from performance evaluation samples for the NIOSH field method and the OSHA laboratory method.

Survival and chromate reducing ability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in industrial effluents.

The ability of a chromate-reducing Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain, isolated from tannery effluent, to survive and reduce chromate in the effluent of a tannery and an electroplating unit was evaluated. The test strain survived in the native tannery effluent but numbers fell sharply in the native electroplating effluent. Supplementation with a carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) source supported bacterial multiplication and chromate reduction in both types of effluents with almost equal efficiency. Chromate reduction, however, was not observed in the absence of C, N or P supplement, or in the chromate-reducing strain.

Optimizing cell preparation technique to enhance adsorption capacity of pseudomonas putida 5-x to heavy metal ions.

A heavy metal accumulation bacterium Pseudomonas putida 5-x isolated from electroplating effluent was used as biosorbent for heavy metal removal from wastewater. In order to compete with physical adsorbent, the optimization of the cell preparation technique for further improving its heavy metal adsorption capacity was conducted. Experimental results showed that the variation of medium compositions and cell growth age, and different cell pre-treating technique would result in the variation of the cell surface components and structural, hence the variation of adsorption capacity of the cell to heavy metal ions. With optimum cell culture conditions and pretreatment technique, the Cu2+ adsorption capacity of the cell was obviously increased from 51.2 mg g-1 to 89.6 mg g-1. The optimised P. putida 5-x cell could be reused at least five cycles to remove heavy metal ions from electroplating effluent with about 95% removal efficiency.

Characterization of emission factors related to source activity for trichloroethylene degreasing and chrome plating processes.

A study at an automotive parts fabrication plant evaluated four metal surface treatment processes during production conditions. The evaluation provides examples of how to estimate process emission factors from activity and air concentration data. The processes were open tank and enclosed tank degreasing with trichloroethylene (TCE), chromium conversion coating, and chromium electroplating. Area concentrations of TCE and chromium (Cr) were monitored for 1-hr periods at three distances from each process. Source activities at each process were recorded during each sampling interval. Emission rates were determined by applying appropriate mass balance models to the concentration patterns around each source. The emission factors obtained from regression analysis of the emission rate and activity data were 16.9 g TCE/basket of parts for the open-top degreaser; 1.0 g TCE/1000 parts for the enclosed degreaser; 1.48-1.64 mg Cr/1000 parts processed in the hot CrO3/HNO3 tank for the chrome conversion coating; and 5.35-9.17 mg Cr/rack of parts for chrome electroplating. The factors were also used to determine the efficiency of collection for the local exhaust systems serving each process. Although the number of observations were limited, these factors may be useful for providing initial estimates of emissions from similar processes in other settings.

A new method for promoting adhesion between precious metal alloys and dental adhesives.

A new, simple method of modifying the adherend metal surface by a liquid Ga-Sn alloy (Adlloy) was applied to dental precious and base-metal alloys for adhesion with 4-META adhesive resin. Adhesions of 4-META resin to three other surface states--as-polished, oxidized at high temperature, and electroplated tin--were also performed for comparison with the adhesion on Adlloy-modified surfaces. Bond strength measurements were made, and the durability against water at the adhering interface was evaluated. The Adlloy-modified gold alloys (Type IV and 14 K) and silver-based alloys (Ag-Pd and Ag-Cu) showed not only high bond strengths but also excellent water durability at the adhesion interface. Surface modification by Adlloy, however, did not affect adhesion to Ag-In-Zn and base-metal (SUS, Co-Cr, and Ni-Cr) alloys. Adhesion to the tin-electroplated specimens was comparable with that to the Adlloy-modified specimens.

Evaluation of the amalgamation reaction of experimental Ag-Sn-Cu alloys containing Pd using a mercury plating technique.

A mercury plating technique was used to determine the phases forming on experimental Ag-Sn-Cu alloy powders (with and without Pd) exposed to electrolytically deposited mercury. Four series of alloy powders were made: a) 1.5% Pd with 10-14% Cu (CU series); b) 1.0% Pd with 10-14% Cu (1PD series); c) 1.5% Pd with different ratios of Ag3Sn (gamma) to Ag4Sn (beta) with 12% Cu (AGSN series); and d) 9-13% Cu with no Pd (NOPD series). Each powder was pressed on a freshly prepared amalgam specimen made from the same powder and metallographically polished until cross sections appeared; mercury was electroplated on the alloy particles. Alloy powders, amalgams and electroplated specimens were examined using XRD and SEM/EDS. XRD confirmed the presence of gamma2 in amalgams made from alloys with Cu < 13% or with Ag3Sn/Ag4Sn > 0.8. Specimens with moderately plated Hg showed gamma1 (Ag2Hg3) polyhedra and eta' Cu6Sn5, but not gamma2. This method effectively identifies alloys prone to forming gamma2.

Laboratory scale studies on removal of chromium from industrial wastes.

Chromium being one of the major toxic pollutants is discharged from electroplating and chrome tanning processes and is also found in the effluents of dyes, paint pigments, manufacturing units etc. Chromium exists in aqueous systems in both trivalent (Cr(3+)) and hexavalent (Cr(6+)) forms. The hexavalent form is carcinogenic and toxic to aquatic life, whereas Cr(3+) is however comparatively less toxic. This study was undertaken to investigate the total chromium removal from industrial effluents by chemical means in order to achieve the Pakistan NEQS level of 1 mg/L by the methods of reduction and precipitation. The study was conducted in four phases. In phase I, the optimum pH and cost effective reducing agent among the four popular commercial chemicals was selected. As a result, pH of 2 was found to be most suitable and sodium meta bisulfate was found to be the most cost effective reducing agent respectively. Phase II showed that lower dose of sodium meta bisulfate was sufficient to obtain 100% efficiency in reducing Cr(6+) to Cr(3+), and it was noted that reaction time had no significance in the whole process. A design curve for reduction process was established which can act as a tool for treatment of industrial effluents. Phase III studies indicated the best pH was 8.5 for precipitation of Cr(3+) to chromium hydroxide by using lime. An efficiency of 100% was achievable and a settling time of 30 minutes produced clear effluent. Finally in Phase IV actual waste samples from chrome tanning and electroplating industries, when precipitated at pH of 12 gave 100% efficiency at a settling time of 30 minutes and confined that chemical means of reduction and precipitation is a feasible and viable solution for treating chromium wastes from industries.

Life cycle assessment of mobile phone housing.

The life cycle assessment of the mobile phone housing in Motorola(China) Electronics Ltd. was carried out, in which materials flows and environmental emissions based on a basic production scheme were analyzed and assessed. In the manufacturing stage, such primary processes as polycarbonate molding and surface painting are included, whereas different surface finishing technologies like normal painting, electroplate, IMD and VDM etc. were assessed. The results showed that housing decoration plays a significant role within the housing life cycle. The most significant environmental impact from housing production is the photochemical ozone formation potential. Environmental impacts of different decoration techniques varied widely, for example, the electroplating technique is more environmentally friendly than VDM. VDM consumes much more energy and raw material. In addition, the results of two alternative scenarios of dematerialization showed that material flow analysis and assessment is very important and valuable in selecting an environmentally friendly process.

A novel fiber coating for solid phase microextraction and its application for the extraction of n-alkane from aqueous sample.

Base on the previous work in laboratory, a novel polyaniline doped with polydimethylsiloxane coating was developed on a stainless steel wire for solid phase microextraction(SPME) by electroplating method. This electroplating method not only has advantages of ease preparation and simple equipments required, but also increases the lifetime of the SPME fiber. The composite fiber (polyaniline/ polydimethylsiloxane(PANI/PDMS)) was evaluated by analyzing n-tridecane, n-tetradecane and n-pentadecane in aqueous sample. The new fiber coating showed comprehensive abilities to extract alkanes compounds. The relative standard deviations were found to be 6.8%-10.33%.

Shear bond strength of indirect resin to NiCr with different metal surface preparations.

This study sought to evaluate the shear bond strength of indirect resin to nickel chromium (NiCr) after different surface preparations. Sixty-four metal samples were divided into four groups, according to surface preparation, and two layers of opaque resin and three layers of body resin were applied. Each group was divided into two subgroups based on storage period in distilled water at 37 degrees C. Mechanical shear testing was performed using a universal testing machine with 0.5 mm/minute of cross-head speed. Debonded areas were analyzed and classified according to different failure types, such as cohesive, adhesive, and mixed. The storage periods were compared using a student T-test (alpha = 0.05); Group T (that is, the tin electroplating group) showed the highest average after 24 hours. The macro retentions showed higher shear bond strength than the sandblasted samples (p < 0.05). Tin electroplating did not improve the shear bond strength of metal-resin bonding. The results were not affected by 30-day storage, with the exception of group T (p < 0.05).

A comparison of tensile bond strengths of resin-retained prostheses made using five alloys.

This in vitro study evaluated the bond strength of metal frameworks cast using Ni-Cr, Ni-Cr-Be, Cu-Al, type IV gold, and noble metal ceramic alloy with and without tin electroplating. The castings were luted to human teeth using Panavia Ex resin. It was found that tin electroplating had a negative effect for the Cu-Al and type IV gold alloys and a positive effect for gold for metal ceramic restorations. The best results were obtained using the Ni-Cr alloy.

Advanced biomaterials used for a new telescopic retainer for removable dentures.

Removable dentures supported by cast-metal telescopic crowns often exhibit an unpredictable increase or decrease in retentive force after being in clinical use for some time. The objective of the present in vitro study was to develop a new retainer for removable dentures and to evaluate its tribological properties. The new retainer is based on a tapered crown design and consists of a conical all-ceramic abutment crown and a coping made of electroplated gold. It was compared with conventional telescopic retainers made of cast metal. There were 30 specimens in groups of equal size by material used (abutment crown/coping): Group 1, gold/gold; Group 2, titanium/titanium; Group 3, ceramic/electroplated gold. Each specimen consisted of 2 conical-shaped abutment crowns (alpha =4 degrees; h = 6 mm; O(base) = 4,5 mm); their copings were rigidly connected at 25 mm intervals. Retentive forces were measured with a universal testing machine following axial loading to 5-400 N. Wear was simulated by 500-100, 000 joining and separating cycles in the presence of artificial saliva. Metallographic cross-sections were made to evaluate the specimens' fit and surfaces with an SEM. Retentive forces in Groups 1 and 2 increased with load, exhibiting nondirectional changes after induced wear. Sometimes the alloys' functional surfaces showed considerable tracks of wear. Neither load nor wear had any effect on Group 3 retentive forces (mean(force) = 5.03 N). The functional ceramic and gold surfaces showed no traces of wear and the best fit (median(gap) = 4.9 microm). Replacing cast metals by ceramics and electroplated gold results in retainers with clinically advantageous tribological effects, implying, in particular, high wear resistance.

Nitric oxide and peroxynitrite affect differently acetylcholine release, choline acetyltransferase activity, synthesis, and compartmentation of newly formed acetylcholine in Torpedo marmorata synaptosomes.

Recent reports proposed that nitric oxide was a modulator of cholinergic transmission. Here, we examined the role of NO on cholinergic metabolism in a model of the peripheral cholinergic nervous synapse: synaptosomes from Torpedo electric organ. The presence of NO synthase was immunodetected in the cell bodies, in the nerve ending area of nerve-electroplate tissue and in the electroplates. Exogenous source of NO was provided from SIN1, a donor of NO and O2-., and an end-derivative peroxynitrite (ONOO-). SIN1 increased calcium-dependent acetylcholine (ACh) release induced by KCl depolarization or a calcium ionophore A23187. The formation of ONOO- was continuously followed by a new chemiluminescent assay. The addition of superoxide dismutase, that decreases the formation of ONOO-, did not impair the stimulation of ACh release, suggesting that NO itself was the main stimulating agent. When the endogenous source of NO was blocked by proadifen, an inhibitor of cytochrome P450 activity of NO synthase, both KCl- and A23187-induced ACh release were abolished; nevertheless, the inhibitor Ng-monomethyl-L-arginine did not modify ACh release when applied in a short time duration of action. Both NO synthase inhibitors reduced the synthesis of ACh from the radioactive precursor acetate and its incorporation into synaptic vesicles as did ONOO- chemically synthesized or formed from SIN1. In addition, choline acetyltransferase activity was strongly inhibited by ONOO- and SIN1 but not by the NO donors SNAP and SNP or, by NO synthase inhibitors. Altogether these results indicate that NO and ONOO modulate presynaptic cholinergic metabolism in the micromolar range, NO (up to 100 microM) being a stimulating agent of ACh release and ONOO- being an inhibitor of ACh synthesis and choline acetyltransferase activity.

Application of hydrocyanic acid vapor generation via focused microwave radiation to the preparation of industrial effluent samples prior to free and total cyanide determinations by spectrophotometric flow injection analysis.

A sample preparation procedure for the quantitative determination of free and total cyanides in industrial effluents has been developed that involves hydrocyanic acid vapor generation via focused microwave radiation. Hydrocyanic acid vapor was generated from free cyanides using only 5 min of irradiation time (90 W power) and a purge time of 5 min. The HCN generated was absorbed into an accepting NaOH solution using very simple glassware apparatus that was appropriate for the microwave oven cavity. After that, the cyanide concentration was determined within 90 s using a well-known spectrophotometric flow injection analysis system. Total cyanide analysis required 15 min irradiation time (90 W power), as well as chemical conditions such as the presence of EDTA-acetate buffer solution or ascorbic acid, depending on the effluent to be analyzed (petroleum refinery or electroplating effluents, respectively). The detection limit was 0.018 mg CN l(-1) (quantification limit of 0.05 mg CN l(-1)), and the measured RSD was better than 8% for ten independent analyses of effluent samples (1.4 mg l(-1) cyanide). The accuracy of the procedure was assessed via analyte spiking (with free and complex cyanides) and by performing an independent sample analysis based on the standard methodology recommended by the APHA for comparison. The sample preparation procedure takes only 10 min for free and 20 min for total cyanide, making this procedure much faster than traditional methodologies (conventional heating and distillation), which are time-consuming (they require at least 1 h). Samples from oil (sour and stripping tower bottom waters) and electroplating effluents were analyzed successfully.

Impression materials.. and electrodeposits. Part I: Impression materials.

1. When compared to the master die, all five impression material specimens showed a shrinkage of from 0.07% to 0.23%. When used as substrates for electrodeposition, these dimensions partly predetermined the dimensions of the electrodeposits. (This will be discussed in Part II of this study). 2. When polymerized and maintained at room temperature, both President and Polyjel demonstrated a slight polymerization shrinkage then remained stable during a 3-week bench set. 3. When polymerized at higher temperatures, both President and Polyjel demonstrated considerable dimensional changes during the first hour as they cooled to room temperature then remained stable during the 3-week dry bench set. 4. President was little affected by a 5-hour immersion in an acid electroplating bath. 5. Polyjel, during 5 hours of immersion, tended to expand in both acid and alkaline electroplating baths.
