[Study of the injury to the urinary system caused by radiological vascular interventional therapy of obstetrical and gynecological benign diseases].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the injuries to the urinary system caused by uterine artery embolization (UAE) for treatment of obstetrical and gynecological benign diseases, including the classification, aetiology, therapy of the injuries and precaution methods. METHODS: The injuries of the urinary system were reviewed in 960 cases of obstetrical and gynecological benign diseases treated with UAE by our interventional centre. Of all 960 cases, 690 cases were myoma, 244 adenomyosis, 8 cervical pregnancy, 2 cornus pregnancy, 14 postpartum hemorrhage, 2 late postpartum hemorrhage. Meanwhile, the correlative problems of the vascular anatomy, DSA and the embolization technics of microcatheter were analyzed. RESULTS: (1) Different degrees of urinary system injuries occurred in 5 of 960 cases, the rate was 0.5%. None was severe injury, one case (0.1%) was moderate injury, and the patient suffered of hydronephrosis caused by segmental necrosis of unilateral ureter. Mild injury occurred in 4 cases (0.4%), including one case of inflammation of bladder, one case of partial necrosis of bladder mucosa membrane, 2 cases of transient slight unilateral hydronephrosis. Among all the injuries, 4 occurred in myoma patients, and one occurred in adenomyosis patient. The operation procedures of all five cases were bilateral uterine artery embolization, and none used microcatheter. (2) The ureter branch arising from the middle or lower part of the uterine artery supplied the middle or lower part of ureter and the length of this part of ureter is about 4 cm, the bladder branch arising from the middle or lower part of uterine artery supplied the bladder and communicated with the bladder vascular net. Correlative injuries could be caused by the retroflow of embolisms into the above arteries. (3) Placement of the catheter into the upper branch of the uterine artery or the tumor vascular net, using microcatheter if necessary and notation of the retroflow in the embolization process could avoid the embolization of bladder and ureter arteries. (4) Totally 506 cases used microcatheter, the ratio was 52.7%. The 5 cases of injuries did not use microcatheter. CONCLUSIONS: Injuries to the urinary system could occur in UAE for treatment of obstetrical and gynecological benign diseases, which can be prevented by carefully differentiating the vascular communicating branch and the conditions of branches, and embolization of the upper branch of uterine artery can avoid the injury.

Laparoscopic sterilization of the bitch and queen by uterine horn occlusion.

Laparoscopic sterilization techniques, originally developed for use in women, were evaluated in the bitch and queen. In the first study (study I), the uterine horns of 6 bitches and 3 queens were occluded by electrocoagulation or plastic clips. The sites of occlusion were midway along the length of 1 cornus and at the uterotubal junction on the contralateral side. Both procedures effectively occluded the uterine horns, as evidenced by a distinctly visible separation of the reproductive tract. Laparoscopic examination 1 year after surgery revealed an enlarged, thin-walled, and fluid-filled uterine segment cranial to the midcornus occlusion sites in all animals. The contralateral horn was normal in appearance, except for the separation from the ovarian bursa. Three of the bitches developed pyometra (confined to the distended uterine segment) at 24 months, at 53 months, and at 72 months after sterilization, respectively. In a subsequent study (study II), 1 adult and 5 prepubertal bitches were sterilized by laparoscopic electrocoagulation of both uterine horns at the uterotubal junction adjacent to the ovarian bursa. Upon reexamination 1, 2, and 4 years later, the uterine horns of these females were normal in appearance, but were separated from the adjacent ovarian bursae. These females continued to be clinically healthy. Laparoscopic sterilization offers a rapid and safe alternative to ovariohysterectomy and, because of its minor invasive nature, can be performed on young, prepubertal animals. Such a procedure may have particular value as a simple, practical means of sterilizing dogs and cats on a mass basis.

[Studies on the clinical significance of the placental implantation site and the change of placental volume by uterine contraction (author's transl)].

Using ultrasonography, the influence of placental implantation site on the fetal position, duration of gestation, duration of labor, etc. was investigated on 321 patients in the 3rd trimester. Moreover, the change of placental volume in connection with the uterine contraction was also studied and the following results were obtained. 1) As for the placental implantation site, it was found on the posterior uterine wall in 139, on the anterior 97, right lateral 55, and on the left lateral in 30. 2) When the placenta was implanted at the uterine cornus, more fetuses were with breech presentation, and when it was found on the lateral site, the fetuses were with the position facing the placenta. 3) In multiparae, the gestational duration was longer when the placenta was implanted on the right side of uterus than on the left or anterior side. (p less than 0.05) 4) Placental implantation site had no relation with labor duration, fetal weight, placental weight, amount of haemorrhage during labor and cord-coiling. 5) During uterine contraction, the placental volume did not change when the pressure was 30 mmHg. During contraction, when the pressure was 50 mmHg, the placental volume became less by 30 cm3 than during interval. During interval, intraplacental blood volume wa 177 cm3.

Determination of oleanolic acid and ursolic acid in cornel by cyclodextrin-modified micellar electrokinetic chromatography.

A cyclodextrin-modified micellar electrokinetic chromatography (CD-MEKC) method was established for the determination of oleanolic acid and ursolic acid in cornel. The two components were separated in the running buffer of 40 mmol/L sodium borate containing 5% methanol, 25 mmol/L SDS and 15 mmol/L hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD). The applied voltage was 24 kV. The wavelength of detection was 200 nm. The temperature was kept at 25 C. Cinnamic acid was used as the internal standard. The analytical performance of the method was tested with respect to linearity, precision and recovery. The calibration curves were linear in the range of 10.15-243.6 microg/mL, r=0.9993 (oleanolic acid) and 10.07-241.7 microg/mL, r=0.9994 (ursolic acid); the intra-day precision (RSD) was less than 3.7% (oleanolic acid) and 4.1% (ursolic acid); the inter-day precision (RSD) was less than 4.2% (oleanolic acid) and 4.9% (ursolic acid). The limits of detection were 1.6 microg/mL for both components. The method proved to be sensitive, rapid, accurate and suitable for the determination of oleanolic acid and ursolic acid in cornel.

Common multiple dsRNAs are present in populations of the fungus Discula destructiva originating from widely separated geographic locations.

DsRNAs were detected in 85/108 isolates of Discula destructiva, the cause of dogwood anthracnose, collected in South Carolina, Idaho, and Alabama. The eastern isolates contained a greater diversity of dsRNA than did Idaho isolates, but most isolates, irrespective of state of origin, contained two small bands (ca. 1.5-2.5 kb) with sequence homology indicated by Northern hybridization. Differences in the banding patterns suggest that genetic diversity of dsRNA in D. destructiva is generated rapidly and that D. destructiva can be simultaneously infected by multiple dsRNA viruses.

Two-phase seed dispersal: linking the effects of frugivorous birds and seed-caching rodents.

Frugivorous birds disperse the seeds of many fruit-bearing plants, but the fate of seeds after defecation or regurgitation is often unknown. Some rodents gather and scatter hoard seeds, and some of these may be overlooked, germinate, and establish plants. We show that these two disparate modes of seed dispersal are linked in some plants. Rodents removed large (>25 mg) seeds from simulated bird feces (pseudofeces) at rates of 8-50%/day and scatter hoarded them in soil. Ants (Formica sibylla) also harvested some seeds and carried them to their nests. Rodents carried seeds 2.5+/-3.2 m to cache sites (maximum 12 m) and buried seeds at 8+/-7 mm depth. Enclosure studies suggest that yellow pine chipmunks (Tamias amoenus) and deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) made the caches. In spring, some seeds germinated from rodent caches and established seedlings, but no seedlings established directly from pseudofeces. This form of two-phase seed dispersal is important because each phase offers different benefits to plants. Frugivory by birds permits relatively long-range dispersal and potential colonization of new sites, whereas rodent caching moves seeds from exposed, low-quality sites (bird feces on the ground surface) to a soil environment that may help maintain seed viability and promote successful seedling establishment.

Complete sequence of the genome of two dsRNA viruses from Discula destructiva.

Complete nucleotide sequences were determined for the four dsRNA segments present in isolate 247 of Discula destructiva from South Carolina. The largest dsRNA (dsRNA 1) was 1787 bp in length with a single open reading frame (ORF) that coded for a putative RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). The dsRNA 2 was 1585 bp in length with a single ORF that coded for a putative viral coat protein. Both the dsRNA 3 (1178 bp in length) and dsRNA 4 (308 bp) contained single ORFs. However, neither the nucleotide sequence nor the sequence of the putative translation products, showed any similarity with sequences currently available from GenBank. Although distinct, all 4 dsRNAs showed conserved nucleotides at both the 5' and 3' termini. Sequences of the two dsRNAs in an isolate of D. destructiva (331 originating from Idaho) were similar in length to, and shared similarity with, the dsRNA 1 and dsRNA 2 of isolate 247. However, although the putative RdRps of isolates 247 and 331 are closely related, the putative viral coat proteins coded for by the respective dsRNA 2s are distinct. Thus, the dsRNAs in the two fungal isolates appeared to originate from distinct, but related viruses, which we have named D. destructiva virus 1 and D. destructiva virus 2, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the two viruses were most closely related to Fusarium solani virus 1 and should be considered members of the genus Partitivirus. Another isolate of D. destructiva (272.1) contains a 12 kb dsRNA in addition to the 4 dsRNAs found in isolate 247. Partial sequence of this 12 kb molecule showed a relationship to other large dsRNA molecules isolated from plants.

Effects of ursolic acid, betulin and sulfur-containing compounds on mucin release from airway goblet cells.

In this study, we investigated whether ursolic acid, betulin and 2 kinds of sulfur-containing compounds--NAC and MESNA--affect mucin release from airway goblet cells and compared the possible activities of these agents with the inhibitory action on mucin release by PLL and the stimulatory action by ATP. Confluent primary hamster tracheal surface epithelial (HTSE) cells were metabolically radiolabeled using 3H-glucosamine for 24 h and chased for 30 min in the presence of varying concentrations of each agent to assess the effects on 3H-mucin release. The results were as follows: ursolic acid, betulin, MESNA and NAC increased mucin release (40-50 % above control) at the highest concentrations (10(-5) M-10(-3) M). We conclude that ursolic acid and betulin can stimulate mucin release by directly acting on airway mucin-secreting cells and suggest that these agents be further investigated for the possible use as mucoregulators in the treatment of chronic airway diseases.

A perception-action coupling type of control in long jumping.

The authors' goal was to identify the control mechanisms used by long jumpers (N = 6) to precisely position their foot at the board. In addition to the intertrial method usually used in previous research, an original method based on a trial-by-trial analysis was also implemented. If the approach to the board in long jumping encompasses two distinct sequences separated by a key step that marks the initiation of visual control, then a trial-by-trial analysis should reveal those sequences, regardless of the amount of adjustment: The step number at which regulation is initiated should be the same irrespective of the amount of adjustment. If, in contrast, a perception-action coupling mechanism operates, then the step number at which regulation is initiated should be a function of the amount of adjustment: A linear relation between those 2 variables should emerge. The results of the present study are compatible with continuous control mechanisms based on a perception-action coupling.

Corni fructus scavenges hydroxy radicals and decreases oxidative stress in endothelial cells.

Corni fructus has been used as a tonic, analgesic, and diuretic in Korean herbal medicine. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the antioxidative effect of corni fructus and its capacity to protect cells against oxidative damage. The radical scavenging activity of corni fructus extracts was measured using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and the antioxidant activity was determined by measuring the peroxide value in a linoleic acid emulsion system. In addition, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were treated with corni fructus extracts and incubated with H(2)O(2) to investigate protection against apoptosis induction. Both ethanol and water extracts of corni fructus produced higher DPPH radical scavenging activity than hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate extracts. Strong antioxidative activities of both water and ethanol extracts were observed in an emulsion system containing linoleic acid and phosphate buffer. The incubation of HUVECs with the addition of ethanol extract significantly decreased H(2)O(2)-initiated damage of endothelial cells, but the water extract did not. The pretreatment with ethanol extract, but not with water extract, significantly decreased apoptotic damage of the H(2)O(2)-treated HUVECs and kept the morphological normality. This study demonstrates that corni fructus is a potent antioxidant substance, and suggests that further investigation is needed to characterize the difference between extract types and to identify its antioxidant compounds.

Short-term light and leaf photosynthetic dynamics affect estimates of daily understory photosynthesis in four tree species.

Instantaneous measurements of photosynthesis are often implicitly or explicitly scaled to longer time frames to provide an understanding of plant performance in a given environment. For plants growing in a forest understory, results from photosynthetic light response curves in conjunction with diurnal light data are frequently extrapolated to daily photosynthesis (A(day)), ignoring dynamic photosynthetic responses to light. In this study, we evaluated the importance of two factors on A(day) estimates: dynamic physiological responses to photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD); and time-resolution of the PPFD data used for modeling. We used a dynamic photosynthesis model to investigate how these factors interact with species-specific photosynthetic traits, forest type, and sky conditions to affect the accuracy of A(day) predictions. Increasing time-averaging of PPFD significantly increased the relative overestimation of A(day) similarly for all study species because of the nonlinear response of photosynthesis to PPFD (15% with 5-min PPFD means). Depending on the light environment characteristics and species-specific dynamic responses to PPFD, understory tree A(day) can be overestimated by 6-42% for the study species by ignoring these dynamics. Although these overestimates decrease under cloudy conditions where direct sunlight and consequently understory sunfleck radiation is reduced, they are still significant. Within a species, overestimation of A(day) as a result of ignoring dynamic responses was highly dependent on daily sunfleck PPFD and the frequency and irradiance of sunflecks. Overall, large overestimates of A(day) in understory trees may cause misleading inferences concerning species growth and competition in forest understories with < 2% full sunlight. We conclude that comparisons of A(day) among co-occurring understory species in deep shade will be enhanced by consideration of sunflecks by using high-resolution PPFD data and understanding the physiological responses to sunfleck variation.

Variations in transpiration rate and leaf cell turgor maintenance in saplings of deciduous broad-leaved tree species common in cool temperate forests in Japan.

To clarify mechanisms underlying variation in transpiration rate among deciduous broad-leaved tree species, we measured diurnal changes in stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf water potential, and calculated the maximum transpiration rate (Emax), leaf-specific hydraulic conductance (K(s-l)) and difference between the soil water potential and the daily minimum leaf water potential (Psis - Psi(l,min)). Pressure-volume (P-V) measurements were made on leaves. Saplings of eight broad-leaved tree species that are common in Japanese cool temperate forests were studied. Maximum transpiration rate varied significantly among species. There was a statistically significant difference in Psis - Psi(l,min), but not in K(s-l). Species with large Emax also had large Psis - Psi(l,min) and gs. The results of the P-V analyses showed that species with a large Psis - Psi(l,min) maintained turgor even at low leaf water potentials. The similar daily minimum leaf pressure potentials (Psip) across all eight species indicate that Psip values below this minimum are critical. Based on these results, we suggest that the leaf cell capacity for turgor maintenance strongly affects Psis - Psi(l,min) and consequently Emax via stomatal regulation.
