Are HMOs ready for risk-based capital requirements? A startling 22% of those responding to the NAIC's test run of the formula reported insufficient capital to avoid triggering corrective action.

Mechanisms for nonprofit hospitals to acquire new equipment.

The expense of new technologies and current high costs of capital financing have combined to encourage hospitals to acquire the use of new equipment by having a group of private investors purchase the equipment and make it available for use by the hospital. However, tax exempt healthcare providers are inhibited from pursuing this alternative because of current Internal Revenue Service policies prohibiting Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for property used by tax exempt organizations. This article discusses some approaches a nonprofit hospital and a group of potential investors can take to enable the investors to claim ITC.

Integrating advanced practice nurses in home care. Recommendations for a teaching home care program.

MUCH, if not all, of the health service needs of the frail elderly can, and will, be provided in the community and at home. To be cared for at home is the overwhelming preference of the growing number of older people with chronic illness and those who are physically dependent-persons "aging in place" in their own domiciles, in naturally occurring retirement communities, and in public or privately funded adult housing residences and assisted living facilities. Medicare and Medicaid capitated financing is increasingly directed at programmatic and reimbursement initiatives that promote "independent living."

Building home care into managed long-term care: the VNS CHOICE model.

New approaches to home and community-centered long term care offer strategic opportunities for home health providers to thrive by providing expanded service options for the growing population of chronically ill, frail elders. The traditional expertise of home health providers makes a powerful combination with the flexibility of capitation financing to successfully meet both the needs of dually eligible older adults and government mandates to reduce overall expenditures. VNS CHOICE, a home-centered, managed long-term care program, is built on the principles and delivery system of home health care. By understanding the VNS CHOICE service delivery model and lessons learned from its first two years of operating experience, home care providers across the country may identify innovations to incorporate into their agency product lines.

[The research and development for dental office information system].

OBJECTIVE: To study how to use the technology of information management, data-base and graphics to develop the dental clinic information system. METHODS: Base on the expert's demonstration and investigation, we made up the operative cord of the dental clinic. The PowerBuilder and SQL Anywhere Tools V6.0 was used to develop the information system. RESULTS: There are 7 different sub-functional models in our system, and they are about patients, workers, finance, capital, expandable, technician lab., and maintenance. The system has been used in 8 dental clinics, and about 1,100 cases history were managed. The result showed us that the system has a strong and perfect function for clinical service, and it is easy to be used. CONCLUSION: The system could enhance the user's management level and benefit to patients and clinical service.
