Hydridotris(thioxotriazolyl)borate (Tt), an ambidentate (N(3)/S(3)) tripodal ligand. X-ray crystal structures of sodium, bismuth(III), tin(IV), and manganese(I) complexes.

Treatment of the heterocycle 5-thioxo-4,5-dihydro-3,4-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazole (thioxotriazole) with sodium tetrahydroborate at 210 degrees C provides the new [N(3)/S(3)] ambidentate tripod ligand hydridotris(thioxotriazolyl)borate (Tt) as its sodium complex salt. Complexes of this ligand with sodium, bismuth(III), tin(IV), and manganese(I) have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The structures of these complexes illustrate the ambidentate character of the ligand with the softer metals bismuth and tin exhibiting sulfur coordination, while sodium and manganese(I) bond via the ligand nitrogen donors. In the [S(3)] coordination mode the ligand creates eight-membered chelate rings with the metal with the consequence that the metal ligand unit adopts a propeller-type conformation with C(3)-symmetry. However, in the [N(3)] mode six-membered chelate rings are formed analogous to the familiar hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate (Tp) ligand.

Tetrakis(imidazolyl)borate-based coordination polymers: group II network solids, M[B(Im)4]2(H2O)2 (M = Mg, Ca, Sr).

We are using the coordinating anion tetrakis(imidazolyl)borate to construct new metal-organic framework structures. In this report, we present three alkaline earth metal network solids incorporating this anion. All three compounds have the same formula, M[B(Im)(4)](2)(H(2)O)(2) (M = Mg, Ca, Sr), and the same coordination environment about the metal. However, the three compounds have different network structures with different degrees of hydrogen bonding; the Mg material forms a two-dimensional network and the Ca and Sr compounds form one-dimensional chains. In addition, we present the structure of the protonated anion B(HIm)(Im)(3) as a model for the default structure of this anion and discuss how the conformation of tetrakis(imidazolyl)borate can affect the structure of network solids.

Bis(phosphino)borates: a new family of monoanionic chelating phosphine ligands.

The reaction of dimethyldiaryltin reagents Me(2)SnR(2) (R = Ph (1), p-MePh (2), m,m-Me(2)Ph (3), p-(t)BuPh (4), p-MeOPh (5), p-CF(3)Ph (6)) with BCl(3) provided a high-yielding, simple preparative route to the corresponding diarylchloroboranes R(2)BCl (R = Ph (10), p-MePh (11), m,m-Me(2)Ph (12), p-(t)BuPh (13), p-MeOPh (14), p-CF(3)Ph (15)). In some cases, the desired diarylchloroborane was not formed from an appropriate tin reagent Me(2)SnR(2) (R = o-MeOPh (7), o,o-(MeO)(2)Ph (8), o-CF(3)Ph (9)). The reaction of lithiated methyldiaryl- or methyldialkylphosphines with diarylchloroboranes or dialkylchloroboranes is discussed. Specifically, several new monoanionic bis(phosphino)borates are detailed: [Ph(2)B(CH(2)PPh(2))(2)] (25); [(p-MePh)(2)B(CH(2)PPh(2))(2)] (26); [(p-(t)BuPh)(2)B(CH(2)PPh(2))(2)] (27); [(p-MeOPh)(2)B(CH(2)PPh(2))(2)] (28); [(p-CF(3)Ph)(2)B(CH(2)PPh(2))(2)] (29); [Cy(2)B(CH(2)PPh(2))(2)] (30); [Ph(2)B(CH(2)P[p-(t)BuPh](2))(2)] (31); [(p-MeOPh)(2)B(CH(2)P[p-(t)BuPh](2))(2)] (32); [Ph(2)B(CH(2)P[p-CF(3)Ph](2))(2)] (33); [Ph(2)B(CH(2)P(BH(3))(Me)(2))(2)] (34); [Ph(2)B(CH(2)P(S)(Me)(2))(2)] (35); [Ph(2)B(CH(2)P(i)Pr(2))(2)] (36); [Ph(2)B(CH(2)P(t)Bu(2))(2)] (37); [(m,m-Me(2)Ph)(2)B(CH(2)P(t)Bu(2))(2)] (38). The chelation of diarylphosphine derivatives 25-33 and 36 to platinum was examined by generation of a series of platinum dimethyl complexes. The electronic effects of substituted bis(phosphino)borates on the carbonyl stretching frequency of neutral platinum alkyl carbonyl complexes were studied by infrared spectroscopy. Substituents remote from the metal center (i.e. on boron) have minimal effect on the electronic nature of the metal center, whereas substitution close to the metal center (on phosphorus) has a greater effect on the electronic nature of the metal center.

Syntheses of aluminum and zinc alkyl complexes of a highly fluorinated tris(pyrazolyl)borate using [HB(3,5-(CF3)2Pz)3]Ag(THF) as the ligand transfer agent.

Dimethylaluminum or ethylzinc complexes of highly fluorinated tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligand [HB(3,5-(CF(3))(2)Pz)(3)](-) can be obtained in excellent yield from the reaction between the silver adduct [HB(3,5-(CF(3))(2)Pz)(3)]Ag(THF) and the metal alkyl reagent Me(3)Al or Et(2)Zn. The X-ray crystal structure of [HB(3,5-(CF(3))(2)Pz)(3)]AlMe(2) shows that the tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligand coordinates to the aluminum center in kappa(2)-fashion. [HB(3,5-(CF(3))(2)Pz)(3)]ZnEt features the typical kappa(3)-bonded ligand.

Bis(pyrazolyl)(thioimidazolyl)borate ligands: the missing member in the N3...S3 scorpionate series.

The anionic bis(pyrazolyl)(thioimidazolyl)borate ligands BpMt(R) with R = tert-butyl and isopropyl were obtained as their potassium salts by reacting potassium tris(pyrazolyl)borate with the corresponding thioimidazoles in the melt at 150 degrees C. They were applied to form some tetrahedral zinc complexes and identified by the crystal structures of (BpMt(t-Bu))ZnCl and (BpMt(i-Pr))Zn-SC(6)H(4)-p-Cl.

Bismuth borates: two new polymorphs of BiB3O6.

Two new polymorphs of BiB3O6 were identified at low temperatures using boric acid as a flux. Unlike alpha-BiB3O6, which crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric space group and, thus, shows exceptional nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, beta-BiB3O6 (I) and gamma-BiB3O6 (II) crystallize in the centrosymmetric space group P2(1)/n with the following lattice parameters: a = 14.1664(1), b = 6.7514(1), c = 4.4290(1) angstroms, beta = 102.125(1) degrees for I; and a = 8.4992(1), b = 11.7093(1), c = 4.2596(1) angstroms, beta = 121.141(1) degrees for II. However, from the structural point of view, the three polymorphs of BiB3O6 are closely related. The structure of beta-BiB3O6 (I) contains a 2-dimensional borate layer, which could be considered to be an intralayered additive product of alpha-BiB3O6. On the other hand, the 3-dimensional borate framework in gamma-BiB3O6 (II) could be considered to be an interlayered additive product of beta-BiB3O6 (I). According to the synthesis experiments and calculated density, it is proposed that compounds I and II should be the low-temperature (high-pressure) polymorphs of BiB3O6.

Poly(2-thienyl)borates: An Investigation into the Coordination of Thiophene and Its Derivatives.

The synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a new sulfur-rich tridentate ligand, tetrakis(2-thienyl)borate (1(-)()), are reported along with a molecular orbital analysis of its coordination to a metal center. Unlike the analogous tetrakis((methylthio)methyl)borate (2(-)()), 1(-)() does not coordinate Mo(CO)(3) when reacted with (C(7)H(8))Mo(CO)(3). The sulfur atoms in both ligands are oriented to coordinate the metal in a pyramidal eta(1) sulfur-bound mode. Approximate molecular orbital calculations are used to compare the metal-ligand interactions in these related species, and the results indicate that the magnitude and polarizability of the electronic charge density of the lone pairs on the sulfur atoms dictate the coordination strength of the ligands. Simple Mulliken atomic charges and orbital occupation numbers are used to determine the extent of charge delocalization. While the conjugation of the sulfur lone pair electrons with adjacent pi bonds in the ligands decreases the corresponding Lewis basicity, the contribution from the aromaticity in the thienyl groups is negligible. During the course of these studies, the structure of K[1] was determined by X-ray diffraction. K[1]: monoclinic space group C2/c, with a = 16.00(2) Å, b = 7.680(7) Å, c = 16.22(2) Å, beta = 118.520(7) degrees, V = 1750(3) Å(3), Z = 4, R(F) = 0.0494, and R(w)(F(2)()) = 0.122. The crystal lattice contains one-dimensional chains of 1(-)() bridged by K ions.

Spin Crossover in Novel Dihydrobis(1-pyrazolyl)borate [H(2)B(pz)(2)]-Containing Iron(II) Complexes. Synthesis, X-ray Structure, and Magnetic Properties of [FeL{H(2)B(pz)(2)}(2)] (L = 1,10-Phenanthroline and 2,2'-Bipyridine).

The first example of spin crossover iron(II) complexes based on dihydrobis(1-pyrazolyl)borate are presented here. The complexes {Fe[H(2)B(Pz)(2)](2)(phen)} (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), 1, and {Fe[H(2)B(Pz)(2)](2)(bipy)} (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine), 2, have been synthesized and their structures determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Crystals 1 and 2 are monoclinic, space group C2/c, Z = 4 with a = 17.448(4) Å, b = 16.101(4) Å, c = 10.611(2) Å, and beta = 112.47(2) degrees for 1 and a = 16.307(2) Å, b = 15.075(4) Å, c = 11.024(4) Å, and beta = 114.95(5) degrees for 2 at 293 K. The crystal structure of 2 was also determined at 139 K in order to detect the structural changes associated with the S = 0 <--> S = 2 spin conversion. 2 retains the same space group upon spin conversion with a = 16.086(6) Å, b = 14.855(6) Å, c = 10.812(2) Å, and beta = 114.18(3) degrees. The structures of 1 and 2 are made up of mononuclear neutral species where the positive charge of iron(II) is neutralized through the coordination of two chelate bidentate dihydrobis(pyrazolyl)borate anions, and phen or bipy neutral ligands are used to fill the iron(II) coordination sphere. The molecular structures for both compounds are very similar, with Fe-N bond lengths in the 2.212-2.158 Å range for the high-spin phase. The structural modifications associated with the spin change in 2 mainly consist of a large reorganization of the metal environment: the Fe-N decreases by 0.15 Å (mean value) when the temperature is lowered from 290 to 139 K and a more regular shape of the [FeN(6)] octahedron is achieved through a slight modification of the trigonal deformation angle from 5.3 degrees to 3.2 degrees along with remarkable variations of the N-Fe-N angles. The thermodynamic model of Slichter and Drickamer was applied to account for the magnetic data. The intermolecular interaction parameter and the enthapy and entropy changes associated with the spin transition were estimated as Gamma = 3.3 kJ mol(-)(1), DeltaH = 13.4 kJ mol(-)(1), and DeltaS = 81.9 J mol(-)(1) K(-)(1) for 1 and Gamma = 1.7 kJ mol(-)(1), DeltaH = 13.4 kJ mol(-)(1), and DeltaS = 83.9 J mol(-)(1) K(-)(1) for 2, respectively.

Fluoride Reactions with Hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate Rhenium Oxo Complexes: Re-F vs B-F Bond Formation.

Rhenium-oxo-fluoride complexes are readily prepared using hydrotris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate [HB(3,5-Me(2)pz)(3)(-), Tp] as a supporting ligand. For instance, treatment of TpRe(O)(OH)Cl with concentrated aqueous HF cleanly forms the chloro-fluoride complex TpRe(O)(F)Cl. Related fluoro-iodide, fluoro-triflate, and difluoride complexes are also described. In contrast, a variety of reactions of analogous compounds with the unsubstituted hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate ligand [HB(pz)(3)(-), Tp] have failed to produce fluoro complexes. Extended refluxing of TpRe(O)I(2) with an excess of NaF in acetonitrile in the air gives a modest yield of an unusual rhenium &mgr;-pyrazolyl &mgr;-oxo dimer, {[kappa(2)-H(F)Bpz(2)]Re(O)}(2)(&mgr;-pz)(2)(&mgr;-O) (5) (pz = pyrazolyl). The X-ray crystal structure of 5 shows that one pyrazolyl of each Tp ligand has been substituted for fluoride. The different reactivity of the Tp and Tp complexes is apparently due to the greater steric protection of the boron afforded by the Tp() ligand. Crystallographic data for 5: monoclinic; space group Cc; a = 19.103(4) Å, b = 10.482(2) Å, c = 14.240(3) Å, beta = 114.82(3) degrees; Z = 4; R = 3.73%, R(w) (observed data) = 4.73%; GOF = 1.20.

A non-cryogenic method for the preparation of 2-(indolyl) borates, silanes, and silanols.

2-Indolyl borates are prepared via addition of LDA to a mixture of N-Boc-indole and triisopropyl borate at 0-5 degrees C. Following acidic hydrolysis, the boronic acids are isolated by crystallization in good to excellent yield (73-99%). The method is quite general, tolerating a wide range of functional groups, and also provides access to 2-silyl derivatives (80-91%).

Refinement of borate structures from 11B MAS NMR spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations of 11B electric field gradients.

The refinement of borate structures using DFT calculations combined with experimental (11)B quadrupole coupling parameters from solid-state NMR spectroscopy is presented. The (11)B electric field gradient (EFG) tensors, calculated using the WIEN2k software for trigonal and tetrahedral boron sites in a series of model compounds, exhibit a convincing linear correlation with the quadrupole coupling tensor elements, determined from (11)B MAS NMR spectra of the central or satellite transitions. The model compounds include Li(2)B(4)O(7), Mg(2)B(2)O(5), Mg(3)B(2)O(6), NH(4)B(C(6)H(5))(4), and colemanite (CaB(3)O(4)(OH)(3).H(2)O). The (11)B quadrupole moment, Q = 0.0409 +/- 0.0002 barn, derived from the linear correlation, is in excellent agreement with the accepted value for Q((11)B). This demonstrates that DFT (WIEN2k) calculations can provide precise (11)B quadrupole coupling parameters on an absolute scale. On the other hand, DFT calculations based on the reported crystal structures for datolite (CaBSiO(4)(OH)) and danburite (CaB(2)Si(2)O(8)) cannot reproduce the experimental (11)B quadrupole coupling parameters to the same high precision. However, optimization of these structures by minimization of the forces between the atoms (obtained by DFT) results in a significant improvement between the calculated and experimental (11)B quadrupole coupling parameters, which indicates that reliable refinements of the borate structures are obtained by this method. Finally, the DFT calculations also provide important structural information about the sign and orientation of the EFG tensor elements in the crystal frame, a kind of information that cannot be achieved from (11)B NMR experiments on powdered samples.

High-aspect-ratio aluminum borate nanowire bundles supported by sucrose.

High-aspect-ratio and single-crystal aluminum borate (Al(18)B(4)O(33)) nanowire bundles with an ordered orientation were synthesized by using an innovative sucrose-assisted growth process. The process involves the dehydration and polycondensation of aluminum borate-sucrose solution to form a highly viscous precursor. The sucrose plays a crucial role in the growth of the nanowire bundles by supporting as a polymeric substrate and a type of adhesive template. Electron microscopy was used to characterize the high-aspect-ratio nanowire bundles. A possible growth mechanism for the nanowire bundles is proposed.

Coupling reactions of alpha-bromoalkenyl phosphonates with aryl boronic acids and alkenyl borates.

[reaction: see text] Transition metal-catalyzed arylation and alkenylation of the alpha-bromoalkenyl phosphonates were investigated with organoboranes and -borates. Arylation was successful with the aryl boronic acids and a palladium catalyst, while alkenylation was found to proceed with alkenyl borates and a nickel catalyst. In addition, an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of the diene prepared by the alkenylation afforded the corresponding adduct.

Palladium pincer-complex catalyzed allylation of tosylimines by potassium trifluoro(allyl)borates.

Palladium pincer complex 1 catalyzes the reaction of trifluoro(allyl)borate 2 with a wide range of tosylimines (3) under mild and neutral reaction conditions. This catalytic transformation affords homoallylic amines (4) in good to excellent yield. Mechanistic studies suggest that a transmetalation reaction between complex 1 and the borate salt 2 provides an eta(1)-allylpalladium complex, which subsequently reacts with the imine substrate. Photophysical properties of Pr(III) and Er(III) complexes of poly(pyrazolyl)borates.

The complexes [M(L(1))(2)(NO(3))] and [M(L(2))(NO(3))(2)](M = Pr, Er; L(1)= the tetradentate ligand dihydrobis-[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazolyl]borate; L(2)= the hexadentate ligand hydrotris-[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazolyl]borate) were prepared and their structural and photophysical properties studied. All complexes are 10-coordinate. Crystallographic analysis of [M(L(1))(2)(NO(3))](M = Pr, Er) showed that for the smaller Er(iii) ions steric congestion at the metal centre results in two of the Er-N(pyridyl) distances being particularly long, which does not occur with the larger Pr(iii) ion that is better able to accommodate 10-fold coordination. On UV irradiation, both Pr(iii) complexes show, in the visible region of their luminescence spectra, transitions originating from both the (3)P(0) level (at ca. 21,000 cm(-1)) and the (1)D(2) level (at ca. 17,000 cm(-1)), a consequence of the fact that the lowest triplet state of the coordinated pyrazolylborate ligands lies at ca. 24,000 cm(-1) in each case so is high enough in energy to populate both levels. This contrasts with Pr(iii) complexes based on diketonate ligands in which the lower triplet energies of the ligands result in emission from the (1)D(2) level only. At longer wavelengths, near-infrared luminescence arising from the (1)D(2) emissive level is observed with lifetimes (in both the solid state and solution) being in the range 50-110 ns. For both Er(iii) complexes, luminescence at 1530 nm occurs following UV excitation of ligand-centred transitions. In CH(2)Cl(2) both complexes gave dual-exponential luminescence, with the major component having a lifetime characteristic of an intact Er(iii) complex (approximately 1.5 micros) and the minor component being much shorter lived (0.2-0.5 micros), suggestive of a species in which a ligand is partially detached and the metal is solvated, with the two forms interconverting slowly. This behaviour is consistent with the steric congestion and long M-N(pyridyl) bonds that were observed in [Er(L(1))(2)(NO(3))]. In the solid state both Er(iii) complexes gave very weak luminescence, which could be fitted to a single exponential decay with a lifetime similar to the longer-lived of the solution components.

The relative stabilities of 11-vertex nido- and 12-vertex closo-heteroboranes and -borates: facile estimation by structural or connection increments.

The relative thermodynamic stabilities of ortho-, meta- and para-isomers of 12-vertex closo-heteroboranes and -borates with different p-block heteroatoms were determined using density functional theory. More electronegative (smaller) heteroatoms tend to occupy non-adjacent, whereas less electronegative (larger) heteroatoms tend to occupy adjacent vertices in the thermodynamically most stable closo-diheterododecaborane isomers. The computed relative stabilities agree perfectly with experimental observations. The energy differences of para- and meta- relative to ortho-isomers of 12-vertex closo-heteroboranes generally depend on the extent of electron localization by a given heteroatom and show highly periodic trends, i.e. increase along the period and decrease down the group. The energy penalties for the HetHet structural feature (two heteroatoms adjacent to each other) for the 12-vertex closo-cluster are apparently significantly different from those for the 11-vertex nido-cluster. Reformulating two 11-vertex nido-structural features, i.e. Het(5k)(2) and HetHet, in terms of connection increments along with the additional structural feature HetHet(m) give the relative stabilities of various isomeric 11-vertex nido- as well as 12-vertex closo-heteroboranes and -borates, using one unique set of increments.

Cyclosporin A-insensitive permeability transition in brain mitochondria: inhibition by 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate.

The mitochondrial permeability transition pore (PTP) may operate as a physiological Ca2+ release mechanism and also contribute to mitochondrial deenergization and release of proapoptotic proteins after pathological stress, e.g. ischemia/reperfusion. Brain mitochondria exhibit unique PTP characteristics, including relative resistance to inhibition by cyclosporin A. In this study, we report that 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate blocks Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release in isolated, non-synaptosomal rat brain mitochondria in the presence of physiological concentrations of ATP and Mg2+. Ca2+ release was not mediated by the mitochondrial Na+/Ca2+ exchanger or by reversal of the uniporter responsible for energy-dependent Ca2+ uptake. Loss of mitochondrial Ca2+ was accompanied by release of cytochrome c and pyridine nucleotides, indicating an increase in permeability of both the inner and outer mitochondrial membranes. Under these conditions, Ca2+-induced opening of the PTP was not blocked by cyclosporin A, antioxidants, or inhibitors of phospholipase A2 or nitric-oxide synthase but was abolished by pretreatment with bongkrekic acid. These findings indicate that in the presence of adenine nucleotides and Mg2+,Ca2+-induced PTP in non-synaptosomal brain mitochondria exhibits a unique pattern of sensitivity to inhibitors and is particularly responsive to 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate.
