Learning the ropes through mentoring.
Abstract
In the past, students entering the first year of a nursing program were often met by a "big sister." The role of the big sister was to help a new student adjust to residence and hospital life through a friendly attitude and informal conversation. As nursing education moved from hospital schools of nursing to colleges and universities, the strictly regimented life of students living and working in close proximity was eliminated, and the role of big sister was lost.
