Computer-based patient education.

Abstract

The computer can be a powerful ally in clinicians efforts to empower their patients to make the right individual decisions. The Internet, in particular, is an extremely valuable resource that enables patients to quickly obtain the latest information on support groups, therapeutic modalities, late-breaking research, and individual coping strategies. The technology is now mature enough that every provider should consider incorporating some type of computer-based patient education into his or her practice.

A review of evaluative studies of computer-based learning in nursing education.

Although there have been numerous attempts to evaluate the learning benefits of computer-based learning (CBL) packages in nursing education, the results obtained have been equivocal. A literature search conducted for this review found 25 reports of the evaluation of nursing CBL packages since 1966. Detailed analysis of the evaluation methods used in these reports revealed that most had significant design flaws, including the use of too small a sample group, the lack of a control group, etc. Because of this, the conclusions reached were not always valid. More effort is required in the design of future evaluation studies of nursing CBL packages.

Online educational resources - will more information make us wiser?

Although the Internet is still primarily an information resource, there is increasing emphasis on its instructional potential. Practitioners can receive Internet-based information and education from a variety of sources around the world. However, they must learn to assess this information and to assimilate it into knowledge that will help them in their practices. They must also be given the opportunity to interact with colleagues to discuss issues pertinent to practice. This article describes the advantages of online education and provides resources to help practitioners evaluate the quality of online information and courses.
