Preliminary steps to computerization.

Abstract

Selecting a computer system for a dental office is a complicated process and the author recommends that this be preceded by a careful practice analysis. Examples of the practicality of computerization are typified in several examples and many common pre-purchase suggestions and guidelines are provided. The need for staff involvement and adequate product review prior to purchase is discussed.

Hospital evacuations due to hazardous materials incidents.

In a previous study 12 Washington State hospitals reported evacuations due to hazardous materials incidents. A telephone survey was conducted to further describe these incidents. Ten hospitals responded to the survey, including one institution reporting two incidents. The incidents included threatened explosions or releases in three cases and actual chemical exposures in eight cases. The actual exposures included irritant gases from mixtures of cleaners in two cases, an unknown exposure in one case, and a variety of other chemicals or products in the remaining cases. Seven of the 11 incidents resulted in emergency department (ED) evacuation. Two incidents involved secondary contamination of ED staff from treatment of patients with chemical exposures who were not decontaminated prior to arrival. Fire department personnel assisted in the majority of incidents. Review of these cases provides useful information for planning drills to test emergency preparedness as required under Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations standards.

RN participation in organizational decision making and improvements in resident outcomes.

In the study on which this article is based, nursing homes with the most improvements in resident outcomes had greater registered nurse (RN) participation in decision making than did homes with the least improvements. The results suggest that nursing homes that want to improve quality can use RN participation to make improvements without significantly increasing costs. Complexity theory served as a framework for the study.

Hospital consolidation. Applying stakeholder analysis to merger life-cycle.

Nearly three of every five hospitals in the United States have been involved in some form of consolidation during the past 5 years. Within this turbulent hospital merger environment, nurse executives are confronted with organizational, professional, and personal decisions. Stakeholder analysis is offered as one strategy to facilitate effectiveness throughout the hospitals' merger life-cycle.
