Reflexology.

Abstract

Reflexology is potentially a very valuable therapeutic nursing skill and could have wide-ranging and cost-effective benefits in health care, from special care baby units through to care of the elderly. Like many other complementary therapies, reflexology seems to restore and maintain health by rebalancing the body. Whilst to many, reflexology may appear a gentle therapy, it is vital that the contraindications are known and that it is only carried out by trained therapists.

[Public health and training for nurses and senior level management].

The teaching of public health has progressively developed within the area of nursing and senior management training, in line with the development of these professions and the population's needs, in order to hold an identifiable place in today's programmes. Its dynamic is closely linked to the educational projects of various institutes. But if training is strengthened to develop this pertinent and significant dimension as an integral part of care providers' functions, then public health as a professional practice remains dependant upon institutional objectives and political and economic trends.

[A concept analysis of autonomy].

Holistic care is the primary focus of today's health care system. Nurses are encouraged to maintain good relationships with their patients and to be sensitive to patient autonomy. Furthermore, patients are increasingly demanding and enjoying the right to join in decision-making processes concerning their treatment plans. The importance of patient autonomy is emphasized in the nursing literature on ethics, but no articles focus on the specific situation in Taiwan. The authors review definitions of and concepts tied to autonomy in the literature, redefine the concept to incorporate additional attributes, and construct example cases. Finally, they list empirical references on the application of the concept and the development of appropriate measures.
