Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The scant references in the literature on the use of the appendix in ureteral substitution prompted us to describe the present case in whom this technique was utilized. METHODS: The surgical technique of appendiceal interposition to repair a defect approximately 10 cm long in the right ureter is described. Following excision of a mass arising from the adnexa that entrapped the ureter at the level of the pelvis, the defect was repaired with the appendix. RESULTS: At two years follow-up, the patient is well and right excretory system function is normal. CONCLUSION: Ureteral repair with the appendix is simple and easy to perform. However, the indications for appendiceal interposition are more limited than those of the classical surgical techniques.

Appendiceal and appendiceal-ileocolic intussusception: sonographic and radiographic evaluation.

The sonographic appearances of two children with appendiceal intussusception and two others with appendiceal-intestinal intussusception are described. All the cases were documented by barium enema and surgically confirmed.

Nonrotation of the midgut with appendiceal mucocele in an adult.

Nonrotation of the midgut in adults and appendiceal mucocele are both rare pathological conditions. We report here the first case of nonrotation of the midgut associated with appendiceal mucocele. The patient was a 51-year-old man admitted to hospital with ileus. An upper gastrointestinal series and a barium enema revealed nonrotation of the midgut without midgut volvulus and with a mass in the ileocecal area. Laparotomy revealed an appendiceal mucocele adhering to the urinary bladder and the rectum. The mucocele had partly ruptured; yellowish mucinous material had entered the abdominal cavity, resulting in pseudomyxoma peritonei. Histological examination revealed a mucinous tumor of the appendix with borderline malignancy. In this patient, the ileus was caused by the appendiceal mucocele rather than being caused by nonrotation of the midgut.

[Treatment of ureteral stenosis with vermiform appendix].

Contribution of one case of iatrogenic ureteral stenosis, successfully managed in a single-kidney patient by substitution with a vermiform appendage. Description of the technique used and brief review of open surgery techniques used in repair of ureteral defects. After a two-year follow-up, the correct functioning of the appendicular graft with preserved renal morphological function is confirmed. Ureteral substitution with an appendage is a good indication for extensive ureteral defects with right mid-ureter location.
