An improved model for loudness coding during auditory adaptation.

Abstract

A comparison of loudness adaptation measured at four baseline intensities and at test values 10 and 20 dB above the baseline intensities revealed an orderly decline. The magnitude of the decline in loudness adaptation with the increasing difference between the test values and the baseline was shown to agree with earlier theories. A method for closely estimating the change in loudness adaptation is presented in convenient graphic form and in algebraic equations.

Neural song preference during vocal learning in the zebra finch depends on age and state.

The zebra finch acquires its song by first memorizing a model song from a tutor and then matching its own vocalizations to the memory trace of the tutor song, called a template. Neural mechanisms underlying this process require a link between the neural memory trace and the premotor song circuitry, which drives singing. We now report that a premotor song nucleus responds more to the tutor song model than to every other stimulus examined, including the bird's own song (BOS). Neural tuning to the song model occurred only during waking and peaked during the template-matching period of development, when the vocal motor output is sculpted to match the tutor song. During the same developmental phase, the BOS was the most effective excitatory stimulus during sleep. The preference for BOS compared to tutor song inverted with sleep/wake state. Thus, song preference shifts with development and state.

Hippocampal involvement in detection of deviant auditory and visual stimuli.

Recent models of hippocampal function have emphasized its role in processing sequences of events. In this study, we used an oddball task to investigate hippocampal responses to the detection of deviant "target" stimuli that were embedded in a sequence of repetitive "standard" stimuli. Evidence from intracranial event-related potential studies has suggested a critical role for the hippocampus in oddball tasks. However, functional neuroimaging experiments have failed to detect activation in the hippocampus in response to deviant stimuli. Our study aimed to resolve this discrepancy by using a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technique that drastically improves signal detection in the hippocampus. Significant hippocampal activation was observed during both auditory and visual oddball tasks. Although there was no difference in the overall level of hippocampal activation in the two modalities, significant modality differences in the profile of activation along the long axis of the hippocampus were observed. In both left and right hippocampi, an anterior-to-posterior gradient in the activation (anterior to posterior) was observed during the auditory oddball task, whereas a posterior-to-anterior gradient (posterior to anterior) was observed during the visual oddball task. These results indicate that the hippocampus is involved in the detection of deviant stimuli regardless of stimulus modality, and that there are prominent modality differences along the long axis of the hippocampus. The implications of our findings for understanding hippocampal involvement in processing sequences of events are discussed.

Evidence for a disorder of locomotor timing in Huntington's disease.

Disturbances of walking have been described in people with Huntington's disease (HD), although the nature of the deficits have not yet been well defined. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether people with HD have a deficit in the regulation of footstep timing during walking. The footstep patterns of 30 people with HD and 30 matched comparisons were measured at self-selected slow, preferred, and fast speeds. Subjects were also instructed to match their footsteps to auditory metronome cues set at 80 and 120 beats per minute. Gait speed, cadence, stride length, and double limb support as a percentage of the gait cycle were measured using a computerized foot-switch system. People with HD demonstrated a disorder in their ability to regulate cadence, manifest as a reduced step frequency when walking at preferred speed and when required to increase their speed. For all walking conditions, people with HD had increased variability of footstep cadence. They also had difficulty synchronizing their footstep timing to an auditory cue. For all walking conditions, people with HD had reduced stride length. Thus, in HD, there is a disorder in the regulation of footstep timing, with increased variability, a restricted cadence range, difficulty synchronizing footsteps to an auditory cue and reduced stride length. The exact neural correlates of this timing disorder are yet to be determined.
