Practical computer applications for endoscopy.

Abstract

A computer can facilitate a nurse's administrative tasks, resulting in increased time to spend with patients. Data can easily be organized and retrieved. Forms can be created when there is no ready-made form at hand. Document revision is easy and cost-effective because the form is not typeset until it has been tried and is ready for permanent adoption. The outcome will be a nursing practice that is more efficient, effective, and professionally rewarding.

'LABNOTE', a laboratory notebook system designed for academic genomics groups.

We have developed a relational laboratory database system, adapted to the daily book-keeping needs of laboratories that must keep track of information acquired on hundreds or thousands of clones in an effective and user-friendly fashion. Data, whether final or related to experiments in progress, can be accessed in many different ways, e.g. by clone name, by gene, by experiment or through DNA sequence. Updating, import and export of results is made easier by specially developed tools. This system, in network version, serves several groups in our Institute and (over the Internet) elsewhere, and is instrumental in collaborative studies based on expression profiling. It can be used in many similar situations involving progressiveaccumulation of information on sets of clones or related objects.

The development cycle of a pharmaceutical discovery chemi-informatics system.

The rate at which we now produce, test, and warehouse new compound structures in the Discovery process strains our ability to evaluate and comprehend the information that results [Fayyad U. Database Programming and Design 1998;11(3):24]. With the advent of robotic systems and specialized software tools, the profusion of data yielded by the pharmaceutical discovery process is testing the manageability and usefulness of the information resource. Clearly, the challenge faced by Discovery today lies not in the generation of data, but in the generation of software tools that provide the means to store, extract, analyze, and display the data contained within the this expanding resource, and thereby meet the needs of the disciplines participating in the Discovery process. In this review a schematic of a chemi-informatics system, that aids our adaptation to the evolving Discovery process and the expanded flow of pharmaceutical data, is discussed.

Enhancing perioperative nursing effectiveness through informatics.

The science of nursing informatics is becoming increasingly important to delivering quality nursing care to all patient populations. Perioperative nursing informatics skills are practiced within the context of powerful and complex information systems that enhance nurses' ability to view and report clinical data in a manner that has never before been possible. This article explores how the analysis of several examples of two typical system indicators (i.e., the unplanned returns to surgery rate within the same admission event, surgical site infection rate) can result in improved patient outcomes. Nursing informatics is an invaluable tool for identifying trends and communicating them to perioperative nurses in a way that can positively influence the delivery of perioperative care and patient outcomes.
