Radiative transfer implies a modified reciprocity relation.

Abstract

The usual reciprocity relations of radiative transfer do not hold two points located in regions of different index of refraction. Modified reciprocity relations that involve the relative index are derived. The result has computational as well as theoretical consequences.

Short-cut method for the correction of light attenuation influences in the experimental data obtained from confocal laser scanning microscopy.

Based on Lambert-Beer law and the light attenuation model, a new method will be introduced in this work in order to eliminate the disturbances caused by signal attenuation in the experimental data measured by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). This new method considers the attenuation effects which depend on concentration of fluorophore-labelled protein as well as attenuation effects which are independent from protein concentration. Furthermore, no solvent additive is required in order to match the refraction index of solvent to bead material. The determination of correction factors is, thus, easily done using the currently investigated chromatographic phase system, so that the validity of the correction factors in the current system can be guaranteed. The introduced correction method has been applied for the investigation of intraparticle protein distribution inside an HIC (hydrophobic interaction chromatography) particle.

Mode-dependent enhancement of photodissociation and photoionization in a seven atom molecule.

We report the first experimental demonstration of vibrational mode-dependent enhancement in photodissociation and photoionization of a seven atom molecule, methylamine (CH(3)NH(2)). The fundamental C-H stretches and the overtones or combinations of CH(3) bends were prepared via stimulated Raman excitation (SRE) prior to their 243.135 nm one-photon dissociation or two-photon ionization. The photodissociation or photoionization of the vibrationally excited molecules was achieved via 10 ns delayed or temporally overlapping SRE and UV pulses, respectively. It is shown that bending modes are more effective than stretches in promoting photodissociation and photoionization, since their UV excitation is favored by larger Franck Condon factors. This behavior provides clear evidence for vibrational mode-dependence in a relatively large molecule with a torsional degree of freedom, indicating that these modes survive intramolecular vibrational redistribution on a time scale considerably longer than hitherto inferred from previous studies.

Dynamics of photosynthesis in fluctuating light.

Our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of plant photosynthesis is expanding from insights into static fluxes in constant irradiance to an understanding of complex dynamic patterns in fluctuating light. Knowledge about regulatory interactions, information about relevant biological features that emerge in fluctuating light, and the new standards for sharing biological models allow world-wide consortia aimed at the comprehensive modeling of photosynthetic dynamics.
