In a prospective study we examined the diagnostic value of MRI and MR cholangiography (MRC) in patients suffering from hepatobiliary disease. By using hepatobiliary contrast media (Mn-DPDP, Gd-BOPTA), sensitivity and specificity of MRI were significantly increased. In 65 patients we comparatively analyzed the diagnostic results of MRI and MRC versus ultrasound, CT and invasive techniques such as ERCP. We conclude that the use of MRI and MRC improves the diagnostic evaluation of patients with hepatobiliary disease.
After giving the highlights on the few surgical indications of biliary cysts, the authors present a film of the resection of the protruding dome with celioscopy for an 80-mm cyst of the 3rd segment of the liver, in association with cholecystectomy for lithiasis. The simple technique and uncomplicated postoperative period emphasize the merits of this procedure, although this should not lead to inappropriate indications.
With the advent of ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, hepatobiliary imaging is changing. The advantages and disadvantages of each new imaging modality will be reviewed. The radiographic approach of a child who presents with a mass or jaundice will be discussed. The role of duplex Doppler ultrasound in the preoperative and postoperative management of liver transplantation patients will be presented.
