Quantitative structural differences within the normal term hum;an placenta: a pilot study.

Abstract

The macroscopic and microscopic structure of four normal term placentae was studied quantitatively using a point counting technique. Different horizontal and vertical zones of the placentae were measured in order to establish a method for sampling placetae which takes into account zonal morphological differences. It was concluded that in order to get a representative estimate of placental microscopic components, if 10 blocks are to be cut, two of them should be from the outer 2 cm zone.

[Purpura pigmentosa progressiva in type III cryoglobulinemia and tartrazine intolerance. A follow-up over 20 years].

A 58 year old patient with hepatitis virus C (HCV) infection had a secondary polyclonal IgG-IgM cryoglobulinemia with a benign 20 year course. Clinically the patient suffered from progressive pigmented purpura (PPP). Histologic evaluation revealed a lymphocytic vasculitis. Food containing tartrazine triggered flares of the PPP, as demonstrated with controlled oral provocation testing. In most of the previously described cases of HCV and type III cryoglobulinemia, the typical cutaneous finding was palpable purpura with leukocytoclastic vasculitis.

[Atrial myxoma: cutaneous manifestations].

INTRODUCTION: Atrial myxomas may have variable misleading symptoms, explaining frequent delays in diagnosis. Multiple embolisms with irreversible consequences may occur. The dermatologist has a prominent role to play, as the clinical picture includes cutaneous signs. CASE REPORT: A 60 year old woman, with previous history of joint pain and Raynaud's phenomenon suffered a sudden neurological transitory ischemic event. The cutaneous manifestations associated left forearm erythematous macules, distal ischemia of the left fourth and fifth fingers and livedo of both lower limbs. Cardiac echography confirmed the clinical diagnosis of atrial myxoma. Surgical excision was followed by rapid and complete cure. DISCUSSION: Atrial myxoma is a rare benign tumor usually revealed by prominent cardiac and embolic manifestations. Systemic and cutaneous signs may however be the sole symptoms, warranting the dermatologist's attention.
