Lever-assisted two-noise stochastic resonance.

A critical interplay of two correlated noises in a nonlinear symmetrical two-well potential system is experimentally demonstrated. One state can become completely noise free, leading to an infinite Kramers time. If an independent lever breaks the potential symmetry, stochastic resonance is recovered. In this new regime, we obtain a plateau, i.e., a high signal-to-noise ratio even for vanishing forcing signals.

High-speed path-length scanning with a multiple-pass cavity delay line.

Techniques for high-speed delay scanning are important for low-coherence interferometry, optical coherence tomography, pump probe measurements, and other applications. We demonstrate a novel scanning delay line using a multiple-pass cavity. Differential delays are accumulated with each pass so that millimeter delays can be generated with tens of micrometer mirror displacements. With special design criteria, misalignment sensitivity can be dramatically reduced. The system is demonstrated to scan 6 m/s at 2-kHz repetition rates. Real-time optical coherence tomography imaging with 500 pixel images at four frames/s is performed. Using a Cr:forsterite laser source, we obtained axial image resolutions of 6 microm with 92-dB sensitivity.

The thermodynamic water retention capacity of solutions and gels.

The thermodynamic water retention capacity (WRC) has been defined and applied to different heterogeneous phase equilibria. This definition includes others known from the literature for testing heterogeneous systems. For the type of a real solution it is shown that at constant values of temperature and pressure the WRC is related to the difference of the chemical potential of water between the original state and the state after having applied a constraint. The dependence of WRC on concentration of a solute is predicted to be described by an e-function which has been experimentally confirmed in the literature.
