Beyond eclecticism.

Abstract

Biopsychosocial eclecticism is incomplete because it does not address the important issues of differential causation and treatment staging. Psychiatric serialism goes beyond eclecticism to consider biological, psychosocial, and existential-moral parameters as equipotential and hierarchical. What this means in practice is that, after forming a treatment alliance, the therapist must always assess the evidence for a biological substrate of disorder and, where feasible, administer the appropriate biological treatments. On a stable biological platform, psychosocial interventions can then be utilized to promote the goals of lieben and arbeiten, and an existential therapy relationship can be forged to promote personal integrity.

Transcultural nursing: a perspective derived from Jean-Paul Sartre.

Transcultural nursing care is a well-established theoretical framework. This theory, developed by Madeleine Leininger, can have an impact on clinical practice, academic preparation and nursing research. The heightened interest in applying transcultural care and the increased need to espouse this framework have been triggered by constant population changes. This paper defines transcultural nursing care and expands its definition further by comparing and contrasting it with Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialist perspective. The two modes of existence as defined by Sartre are closely examined. Concrete examples are offered as cultural phenomena and the components of a cultural assessment are discussed and applied. The philosophical thesis is approached from a transcultural nursing perspective and existentialism is shown to serve as a foundation for transcultural nursing. The advantages and disadvantages of transcultural nursing practice and the preparation of transcultural nurses are finally addressed.

Existentialism

[The triad configuration, humanist-existential-personal: a theoretical and methodological approach to psychiatric and mental health nursing].

The author establishes a research line based on a theoretical-methodological referential for the qualitative investigation of psychiatric nursing and mental health. Aspects of humanist and existential philosophies and personalism were evaluated integrating them in a unique perspective. In order to maintain the scientific method of research in this referential the categorization process which will be adopted in this kind of investigation was explained.
