This work aims at describing and analyzing the concept of fundamental nursing, with the purpose to clarify the constitutive elements that can be applied to understand and expand this termination. In spite of being created in the 1970s at the Anna Nery School of Nursing, this concept was adopted by other Schools of Nursing in the country to designate a teaching program or a department. The author states in favor of this termination as a theoretical abstraction that is maintained in the practice dimension as an essential component of nursing understood in its totality. The author affirms that what is fundamental is not only the basic, but general, including professional actions of providing care to people and human groups. Fundamental is the character of "uniqueness" that transcends nursing in its totality, independently of the several categorizations, sectors and sceneries of professional action. It also represents the consolidation of nurses meeting with their clients in health or disease situations. The personal view is applied to elucidate predicatives and implications regarding the use of this concept in teaching and research.
The author sets out to know the degree of use of the Nursing Treatment Process (NTP) and its possible relationship with these factors: its profile, knowledge about NTP and the Virginia Henderson Model (VHM), nurses case loads and nurses opinions. The subjects in this study have been nurses in the Sant Martí sanitary district in Barcelona. The methodology used consisted in transversal and qualitative descriptive studies performed in 2001; the use of NTP by means of an audit of at home patient visits, NTP-VHM knowledge and profile by means of an anonymous self-administered questionnaire which had 30 theoretical-practical questions; nurses case load study by means of an analysis of the population attended to by nurse per year and nursing activities; and a qualitative study which used opinion questions and interviews.
This study tries to understand the relation between the reality of the nurse's everyday work and the construction process of this identity, using Agnes Heller's sociological theory of everyday life as the main reference. The possibilities of the worker's expression and fulfillment occur through objective and subjective elements of job reality which comes upon the worker as people who put order and tension in their everyday job; these job determinants imprint and produce impacts, giving sense to the work quality and constructing concrete possibilities to the worker to manifest him/herself as Whole being, guiding the construction of his/her identity.
