Optimized acquisition parameters and statistical detection limit in quantitative EELS.

Abstract

Optimizing the acquisition parameters for EELS recording has to be accomplished simultaneously from the physical and the statistical points of view; the statistical aspect of the question is covered here. Approximate probability density functions of the variables of interest are derived, which provide a global measure of signal-to-noise ratio taking into account every step of the EELS edge area estimation process. Qualitative and quantitative advice is given regarding the critical choice of the estimation and integration energy regions. The notion of visual contrast is presented; it permits the introduction of the concept of statistical detection limit. It is found that for typical experimental conditions, when other factors are equal, the required analysis time for the sample varies approximately as the inverse square of the concentration.

SIMS investigation of CrN sputtercoatings.

Chromium nitride layers produced by reactive sputtering with different process parameters were characterized with EPMA, SIMS depth profiling, and three-dimensional SIMS imaging. EPMA results are used to quantify the major components of the films while SIMS is used to gather information about the distribution of the elements chromium, silicon, nitrogen, and oxygen. For all measurements a Cs+ primary ion beam was applied to sputter the sample. Positive MCs+ (M represents the element to be analyzed) secondary ions were detected. SIMS depth profiling shows an even distribution of all major elements except oxygen, which shows significant differences in concentration and distribution depending on the process parameters. CrN layers produced at low sputter power have much higher concentration of oxygen than layers produced with high sputter power. Heating the silicon substrate during the process results in an enrichment of oxygen at the interface.

Low pressure plasma treatment of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate): toward tailored polymer surfaces for tissue engineering scaffolds.

Thin films of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) were modified by microwave ammonia plasma treatment. The results of the modification were studied by means of contact angle goniometry, ellipsometry, Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflection spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To prove the presence of amino groups on the poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) surface, chemical labeling with 4-trifluoromethyl benzaldehyde was performed before X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Under the applied plasma conditions, a hydrophilic surface with a good long-term stability was obtained.

Chemi-refiner mechanical pulping of flax shives: refining energy and fiber properties.

Oil-seed flax shive has been promoted as a raw material for low-end paper making because of its overall cost benefit over hardwood and groundwood pulp and increasing demand for low-cost pulp in rigid packaging applications. We have made refiner mechanical pulp from oil-seed shives by using a 300 mm Sprout-Bauer pilot refiner. The factors controlled during refining were: consistency, multi-pass refining, temperature, spacing between the plates and polyol-anhydride reactant concentration. Based on the results in this study it is apparent that unmodified shives develop low mechanical strength, shorter fibers and large amount of fines. Chemical modification of shives with a pre-reacted mixture of polyol-anhydride reduces refining energy consumption, improves strength performance but decreases scattering coefficient. From the results of investigation it is suggested that chemically modified refiner pulp from shives cannot be used for high-grade paper manufacture but it can be used as a low-cost filler for low-end applications in packaging or low-performance decorative papers.
