Some data concerning a sensorimotor versus semiotic processing in a form-recognition task.

Abstract

This study investigated how sensorimotor activities interact with the geometric characteristics and the meaning of an object during development of writing. These changes were studied in 4- to 7-yr.-old girls. Analysis showed that visuo-spatial activities play a role in denomination and graphic activities, especially during critical periods of development. These activities have varying effects at different stages of development. The spatial factors studied here act differently in a verbal task (denomination) and in a perceptual-motor activity (graphic activity).

Cataract blindness--challenges for the 21st century.

Cataract prevalence increases with age. As the world's population ages, cataract-induced visual dysfunction and blindness is on the increase. This is a significant global problem. The challenges are to prevent or delay cataract formation, and treat that which does occur. Genetic and environmental factors contribute to cataract formation. However, reducing ocular exposure to UV-B radiation and stopping smoking are the only interventions that can reduce factors that affect the risk of cataract. The cure for cataract is surgery, but this is not equally available to all, and the surgery which is available does not produce equal outcomes. Readily available surgical services capable of delivering good vision rehabilitation must be acceptable and accessible to all in need, no matter what their circumstances. To establish and sustain these services requires comprehensive strategies that go beyond a narrow focus on surgical technique. There must be changes in government priorities, population education, and an integrated approach to surgical and management training. This approach must include supply of start-up capital equipment, establishment of surgical audit, resupply of consumables, and cost-recovery mechanisms. Considerable innovation is required. Nowhere is this more evident than in the pursuit of secure funding for ongoing services.

Dynamical study of tyrosine hydroxylase expression and its correlation with vasopressin turnover in the magnocellular neurons of the supraoptico-posthypophysial system under long-term salt loading of adult rats.

Using immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridization and image analysis, we attempted to compare the dynamical expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and vasopressin (VP) mRNAs and proteins in the magnocellular neurons of the supraoptic nucleus in rats drinking 2% NaCl for 1, 2 and 3 weeks. Three stages in the reaction of VPergic neurons have been distinguished. The initial stage (first week) showed a synchronous activation of TH and VP mRNAs and protein expression as well as an increased number of TH-immunoreactive neurons. The next stage (second week) was characterized by a further increase in the number of TH-immunoreactive neurons. The number of VPergic neurons also increased significantly. Although the TH and VP mRNAs levels fell during the second week of osmotic stimulation, the TH content increased significantly, and the VP content remained at the same level. During the last stage (third week), TH-immunoreactive neurons increased in number and were as numerous as VP-immunoreactive neurons in intact rats. These data suggest that, finally, all the VPergic neurons begin to synthesize TH. The concentrations of VP and TH mRNAs did not change during the third week of osmotic stimulation, while the VP and TH contents increased. Thus, our study shows that there is a correlation between TH expression and VP expression and suggests similar mechanisms for the regulation of VP and TH gene expression and synthesis during long-term osmotic stimulation.

Prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs from São Paulo State, Brazil.

The prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in stray dogs, and dogs with owners was investigated by fecal examinations from 271 dogs employing sedimentation, simple flotation and centrifugation-flotation methods. The centrifugation-flotation method, when compared to simple flotation or sedimentation methods was generally more accurate in the diagnosis of all intestinal parasites, but statistical differences were detected only in relation to Giardia spp. and Cystoisospora spp. (synonym Isospora spp.). The following parasites, with their respective prevalence, were diagnosed in the fecal samples: Ancylostoma spp. (23.6%); Toxocara canis (5.5%); Trichuris vulpis (4.8%); Spirocerca lupi (1.9%); Dipylidium caninum (0.7%); Giardia spp. (12.2%); Hammondia heydorni (2.6%); Cystoisospora spp. (8.5%); and Sarcocystis spp. (2.2%). The prevalence of most parasites was similar for dogs of mixed-breed and for dogs of a defined-breed, except for Cystoisospora spp. and T. canis which showed a significantly higher prevalence in mixed-breed dogs. The prevalence of Ancylostoma spp. (17.1%) was significantly lower in stray dogs than in those with an owner (31.9%) and the prevalence of Giardia spp. and Cystoisospora spp. was higher in stray dogs (P < 0.05). No effect of season on the occurrence of the different parasite genera could be observed, except for Ancylostoma spp., for which an increase in the percentage of dogs shedding eggs was observed at the beginning of Summer with a peak occurrence during April and May (Autumn). The prevalence of Ancylostoma spp., T. canis, T. vulpis, Giardia spp. and Cystoisospora spp. was higher in adult males than in adult females, but significant differences between the two groups occurred only with Giardia spp. Young animals were found to more frequently shed Nematode eggs in feces than adult animals.
