Many-body interaction effects on the low-k structure of liquid Kr.

Neutron diffraction measurements and theoretical calculations of the structure factor S(k) of liquid Kr are extended to small k values (k<4 nm(-1)). The results show that many-body interaction contributions have an increasing effect on S(k) as k-->0, reaching at least 40% of the measured intensity. Both the phase diagram and the low-k structural data of dense Kr turn out to be closely reproduced by the hierarchical reference theory if additional many-body forces are taken into account by an augmented strength of the Axilrod-Teller triple-dipole potential. The experimental density derivative of S(k) is also used for a very sensitive test of the theories and interaction models considered here.

Photon W value for krypton in the M-shell transition region.

Absolute W values for krypton have been measured for incident X rays with energies in the range of 85 to 1000 eV, using monochromatic synchrotron radiation and a multiple-electrode ion chamber technique that yields the absolute intensity of the X-ray beam and the photoabsorption cross section. To improve the purity of the incident X rays, the electron storage ring was operated at an energy lower than the normal mode, and thin filters were used. The W values are derived from the measured photon intensity and photoabsorption cross section, using the mean charges of the residual ions obtained in previous work. A considerable oscillation of the W values with the photon energy was found in the region near the krypton 3d electron ionization edge. The results are discussed and compared with data in the literature for low-energy electrons and with the calculations from a model that includes multiple photoionization effects related to inner-shell ionization.

[Recovery and purification of leakage radioactive krypton].

A recovery-purification system for radioactive Kr was constructed by enclosing an 85Kr testing apparatus with an airtight vessel. Experiments were carried out to examine the recovery rate of leakage Kr and the purity of Kr recovered with the system. The concentration of the leakage Kr in the airtight vessel was decreased to a detection limit of 0.3 ppm by the system. The recovery rate corresponded to 99.976%. The concentration of the Kr recovered was over 99.9908%. It shows that almost 100% of the radioactive Kr leaked out into the airtight vessel could be recovered and the He content in the Kr recovered could be reduced to less than 100 ppm.
