Timolol--further observations.

Abstract

Data from clinical records of patients using timolol confirm the ocular hypotensive effect of the drug in secondary glaucoma, aphakic glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and when used in combination with various other forms of glaucoma therapy. No serious local or systemic side effects were noted. Although many adrenergic agents ultimately produce tachyphylaxis, this effect is infrequent in timolol therapy.

Timolol therapy in secondary angle-closure glaucoma post penetrating keratoplasty.

Timolol maleate (o.25% or 0.5% twice a day) was used in 13 eyes of 13 patients with secondary angle-closure glaucoma post penetrating keratoplasty uncontrolled on miotics, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, or both. When added to each patient's current regimen, tomolol controlled 9 of the 13 eyes that no longer required cyclocryotherapy, and it was well tolerated locally and systemically. Its ocular hypotensive effect appears to supplement miotics and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.

Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors

Correlation of carbonic anhydrase inhibitory activities of benzenesulfonamides with the data obtained by use of nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance.

Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra of several benzenesulfonamides in their solid state are reported and analyzed in the framework of the Townes and Dailey theory. Satisfactory correlations between the (sigma NH--sigma NS) electron densities at the sulfamyl nitrogen and the in vitro carbonic anhydrase inhibitory activities of the sulfonamides have been found. The correlations are in accord with the results of other studies that show the carbonic anhydrase inhibitory activities to be largely influenced by the electronic property of the sulfamyl group.
