An effective hearing conservation program.

Abstract

In a major chemical producing complex, noise problems of all kinds are encountered. One complex of The Dow Chemical Company, the Michigan Division, has approached this problem by setting up a Hearing Conservation Committee consisting of various disciplines: Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Medical, Engineering, and Production. This committee reviews each plant's Hearing Conservation Program bi-annually until all equivalent exposure ratios are less than one. Audiometric data is entered on a computer for rapid evaluation of periodic audiograms.

[Problem of controlling current mental capacity in operators].

The industrial means to control and forecast the current mental capacity of operators are absent nowadays in spite of its level connected with about 2/3 of accidents through the personnel's fault. Results of 10 year-experience show how the computerized self-educating adaptable systems of current individual mental capacity monitoring in power engineering operators were created. The systems to control the mental capacity in operators before and over the course of the shift let also improve the reliability and economy in exploitation of huge technological enterprises and preserve the operator's health.

[The HLA antigen system in patients with pneumoconiosis].

The antigenic HLA spectra, loci A, B and C, were explored in 102 patients suffering from pneumoconiosis of workers exposed to dust in machine building. Significant frequency differences were discovered in some antigens and their complexes (AI; A I B 8; Bw35 Cw4) between the patients and control group subjects (112 healthy persons). The patients with uncomplicated pneumoconiosis and coniotuberculosis manifested appreciable differences in the antigenic HLA spectra. The authors propose an algorithm of predicting risk at pneumoconiosis as well as risk at coniotuberculosis, resting on the results of the typing of the antigenic HLA spectra.
