252Cf plasma desorption mass spectrometry in the synthesis of porphyrin model systems.

252Cf plasma desorption mass spectrometry has been used in the characterization of more than 100 synthetic porphyrins ranging in mass from 614 u for tetraphenylporphyrin to over 2000 u for some porphyrin model systems. In virtually every case, 252Cf plasma desorption mass spectrometry yielded an intense ionized molecule ion [M.+ and/or (M+H)+], irrespective of the groups appended to the porphyrin. The appended groups include carboxylic acids, amides, imides, chloroacetamides, Fmoc-protected amino acids, aromatic amines, nitriles, alkynes, alkenes, esters, active esters, benzyl ethers, acetals, dithioacetals, ketones, imines, phenols, quinone, hydroquinone, ferrocene, cyanine dyes, trimethylsilyl protecting groups, nitro groups, and combinations of these functionalities. Metalloporphyrins and porphyrin-porphyrin dimers are also analyzed with ease. Resolved isotopic peaks were observed for porphyrins with molecular weights below 1000, and unresolved isotopic peaks yielding average masses were observed for porphyrin compounds with higher molecular weights. The limited resolution in the higher molecular weight range does not lessen the utility of the method because the observation of the molecule ions [M.+ and/or (M+H)+] provides unambiguous evidence concerning the success of the synthesis. The 252Cf plasma desorption mass spectra of porphyrins are not complicated by chemical transformations. This method is ideally suited for rapid analysis of synthetic porphyrins and provides a powerful tool for chemists engaged in the synthesis of complex organic molecules.

252Cf plasma-desorption mass spectrometry of lipid A from Enterobacter agglomerans.

Endotoxins from gram-negative bacteria are believed to be causative agents of byssinosis, an occupational pulmonary disease associated with exposure to cotton dust in textile mills. Lipid A preparations from Enterobacter agglomerans, a gram-negative bacterium commonly found in cotton and cotton dust, have been analyzed using plasma-desorption mass spectrometry. Results indicate the existence of at least two lipid A types which differ only by the presence of an additional oxygen atom whose position has been localized to the acyloxyacyl ester-linked side-chain of the distal portion of the molecule. The lower molecular weight compound of the two structures has the same molecular weight and presumably the same empirical formula as a well-characterized lipid A from Salmonella minnesota. The mass spectra of lipid A compounds obtained from S. minnesota and E. agglomerans show strong similarities. Palmitoyl, hydroxymyristoyl, myristoyl, and lauroyl side-chains which are known to be present in the former are inferred from spectral evidence to be present in the latter.

Benchmark test of transport calculations of gold and nickel activation with implications for neutron kerma at Hiroshima.

A benchmark test of the Monte Carlo neutron and photon transport code system (MCNP) was performed using a 252Cf fission neutron source to validate the use of the code for the energy spectrum analyses of Hiroshima atomic bomb neutrons. Nuclear data libraries used in the Monte Carlo neutron and photon transport code calculation were ENDF/B-III, ENDF/B-IV, LASL-SUB, and ENDL-73. The neutron moderators used were granite (the main component of which is SiO2, with a small fraction of hydrogen), Newlight [polyethylene with 3.7% boron (natural)], ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), and water (H2O). Each moderator was 65 cm thick. The neutron detectors were gold and nickel foils, which were used to detect thermal and epithermal neutrons (4.9 eV) and fast neutrons (> 0.5 MeV), respectively. Measured activity data from neutron-irradiated gold and nickel foils in these moderators decreased to about 1/1,000th or 1/10,000th, which correspond to about 1,500 m ground distance from the hypocenter in Hiroshima. For both gold and nickel detectors, the measured activities and the calculated values agreed within 10%. The slopes of the depth-yield relations in each moderator, except granite, were similar for neutrons detected by the gold and nickel foils. From the results of these studies, the Monte Carlo neutron and photon transport code was verified to be accurate enough for use with the elements hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, silicon, chlorine, and cadmium, and for the incident 252Cf fission spectrum neutrons.
