The authors observed the bleaching of fluorosed human teeth with scanning electronic microscope (SEM). They found that the essence of the bleaching is the demineralization caused by the hydrochloric acid in the bleaching solutions. Physical grinding of the surface of the fluorosed enamel can accelerate the penetration of the solutions into enamel and shorten the bleaching time. The authors also observed the ultrastructural changes caused by the bleaching, and pointed out that the treatment of the bleached enamel surface is very important.
The management of dark staining of teeth caused by dental fluorosis is discussed. The results of treatment of 20 patients with dental fluorosis by a hydrochloric acid-pumice technique are described. All patients showed considerable improvement in colour which was maintained for review periods of (up to) two years.
