Response latencies to visual stimulation and disparity sensitivity in single cells of the awake Macaca mulatta visual cortex.

The onset response latencies to dynamic random dot figures (solid figures) and dynamic random dot stereograms were measured in single units recorded from areas V1 and V2 of two awake Macaca mulatta monkeys. We studied 56 cells, 39 from V1 and 17 from V2. In 14 disparity sensitive and 13 disparity unsensitive cells from V1 the median latencies to solid figures were 59.8 and 73.6 ms, respectively, which were statistically different. In 26 disparity sensitive cells from V1 and 17 from V2 the median latencies to stereofigures were 85.6 and 97.9 ms, respectively, which were statistically different. These results indicate that V1 disparity sensitive cells may have shorter integration time than disparity unsensitive cells and that there is a transferring delay for disparity information between areas V1 and V2.

Differences between the Lewis and Sprague-Dawley rats in chronic inflammation induced norepinephrine sensitivity of cutaneous C-fiber nociceptors.

We investigated whether there are any differences between the Lewis and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats in chronic inflammation-induced norepinephrine (NE) sensitivity of nociceptors. Activities of C-fiber nociceptors innervating rat hairy hindpaw skin were recorded in an in vitro skin-nerve preparation. Sixty-five percent of C-fibers from inflamed Lewis rats were excited by NE (10 microM), against only 38% of C-fibers from inflamed SD rats. The average of the total impulses evoked in response to NE was also significantly higher in Lewis rats. The alpha2-adrenoceptor antagonist CH 38083 (10 microM) and yohimbine (10 microM) consistently blocked the NE-excitation of both strains. These results show that after chronic inflammation, C-fiber nociceptors of Lewis strain rats have a stronger sensitivity to NE, and that alpha2-adrenoceptors are predominately involved in the NE-sensitivity of inflamed rats in both strains.

Mutual coupling among insect neurosecretory cells with an ultradian firing rhythm.

Firing correlations were examined among four pairs of cerebral neurosecretory cells with an ultradian bursting rhythm in the pupal silkmoth Bombyx mori. Cross-correlation analyses of spiking activities between pairs of simultaneously active cells usually revealed a significant correlation of firings: 20-50% of spikes of a cell fired within 0.2 s before or after the other cell's spikes fired. The mutual, excitatory communication among neurosecretory cells make the set of cells a weakly coupled multi-oscillator system that may generates a pulsatile release pattern of their product, an insulin-related neuropeptide (bombyxin).
