Determination of three nitroimidazole residues in poultry meat by gas chromatography with nitrogen-phosphorus detection.

A method was developed for the determination of the nitroimidazole compounds dimetridazole (DMZ), ronidazole (RNZ) and metronidazole (MNZ) by gas chromatography with nitrogen phosphorus detection. Nitroimidazole compounds were extracted with acetonitrile, followed by acidification using acetic acid and cleanup using strong cation-exchange (SCX) SPE column. Validation in chicken muscle fortified at a concentration of 5 microg/kg gave mean recoveries of 85% DMZ, 90% RNZ, 80% MNZ with RSDs of 13.0, 14.3, 11.2%, respectively (n=6). The method is suitable for statutory residue testing and is used as a quick screening method in the National Residue Surveillance Plan in China.

Leishmaniasis in Sudan. Mucosal leishmaniasis.

Sudanese mucosal leishmaniasis is a chronic infection of the upper respiratory tract and/or oral mucosa caused mainly by Leishmania donovani. The disease occurs in areas of the country endemic for visceral leishmaniasis, particularly among Masalit and other closely related tribes in western Sudan. The condition may develop during or after an attack of visceral leishmaniasis, but in most cases it is a primary mucosal disease. Unlike South American mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, mucosal leishmaniasis in Sudan is not preceded or accompanied by a cutaneous lesion. Pathologically, the lesions show a mixture of macrophages, plasma cells and lymphocytes. An epithelioid granuloma may also be found. Parasites are scanty. Diagnosis is established by demonstration of parasites in smears or biopsies, by culture or animal inoculation, or with the aid of the polymerase chain reaction. Most patients give positive results in the direct agglutination test and leishmanin skin test. Patients respond well to treatment with pentavalent antimony compounds.

Dissociation and electrooxidation of primaquine diphosphate as an approach to the study of anti-chagas prodrugs mechanism of action.

This paper describes the voltammetric behavior of primaquine as a previous support to the further understanding of the delivery and action mechanisms of its respective synthesized prodrugs. There are few papers describing the drug behavior and most of the time no correlation between oxidation process and pH is done. Our results showed that primaquine oxidation is a one-step reaction involving two electrons with the charge transfer process being strongly pH-dependent in acid medium and pH-independent in a weak basic medium, with the neutral form being easily oxidized. This leads to the conclusion that quinoline nitrogen ring neutralization is a determinant step to the formation of the oxidized primaquine form. The existence of a relationship between the primaquine dissociation equilibrium and its electrooxidation process is shown. This work points the importance of voltammetric methodology as a tool for further studies on quantitative relationship studies between chemical structure and biological activity (QSAR) for electroactive drugs.
