53Mn-53Cr dating of fayalite formation in the CV3 chondrite Mokoia: evidence for asteroidal alteration.

Fayalite grains in chondrules in the oxidized, aqueously altered CV3 chondrite Mokoia have large excesses of radiogenic chromium-53. These excesses indicate the in situ decay of short-lived manganese-53 (half-life = 3.7 million years) and define an initial 53Mn/55Mn ratio of 2.32 (+/-0.18) x 10(-6). This ratio is comparable to values for carbonates in CI and CM chondrites and for several classes of differentiated meteorites. Mokoia fayalites formed 7 to 16 million years after Allende calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions, during hydrothermal activity on a geologically active asteroid after chondritic components had ceased forming in the solar nebula.

Chromium Isotopes

Radioisotope investigations of haematological disorders (excluding sickle cell disease) in Sierra Leone.

Using 51Cr, 125I, and 59Fe, red cell survival, blood volumes and certain aspects of iron metabolism were investigated in Sierra Leoneans referred for further evaluation of various blood disorders. The data provided clarification of the nature of the anaemia in some patients and demonstrated the haemolytic and erythropoietic role of the spleen in others with splenomegaly. Blood volume values in healthy individuals were found to be similar to those of normal subjects in other populations. Increased plasma volumes commonly described in non-African patients with anaemia and splenomegaly were also recorded in this group of Sierra Leoneans. Information obtained from these studies indicates that facilities for radioisotope investigations would be an asset in the diagnostic evaluation of complex blood disorders and in haematological research in developing African countries.

Chromium Isotopes

A method for the production of iron-52 with a very low iron-55 contamination.

The production and radiochemical separation of 52Fe from 4He irradiation of enriched 50Cr target is described. Methods developed for the recovery of the target material (50Cr) are also described. The yield of 52Fe at 38 MeV incident 4He energy is 1667 +/- 133 MBq/C (163 +/- 13 microCi/microAh) at end of bombardment and the contamination of 55Fe is only 0.008%.
