Spatial aspects of reproduced sound in small rooms.

This paper reports on the influence of individual reflections on the auditory spatial aspects of reproduced sound. The sound field produced by a single loudspeaker positioned in a normal listening room has been simulated using an electroacoustical synthesis of the direct sound, 17 individual reflections and the reverberant field. The threshold of detection was measured using the method of adjustment for five reflections using three subjects for noise and speech. The thresholds have been measured for two simulated situations (1) a loudspeaker with a frequency independent directivity characteristics and frequency independent absorption coefficients of the room surfaces and (2) a loudspeaker with directivity similar to a standard two-way system and absorption coefficients according to measurements of real materials. The results have shown that subjects can reliably distinguish between timbre and spatial aspect of the sound field, that the spectral energy above 2 kHz of the individual reflection determines the importance of the reflection for the spatial aspects, and that only the first order floor reflection will contribute to the spatial aspects.

An adaptive noise canceller for hearing aids using two nearby microphones.

An adaptive noise cancellation scheme based on two-stage adaptive filtering as proposed by Van Compernolle [Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (IEEE, New York, 1990)] was tested for two identical directional microphones mounted in an endfire configuration within a single behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid. Speech intelligibility tests were carried out with two normal hearing subjects and three hearing aid users with moderate hearing losses, in a realistic test environment using open set words and sentences. A significant improvement, on average more than 5 dB, of speech reception threshold (SRT) in background noise was obtained.

Dual-channel telemetry system for recording vocalization-correlated neuronal activity in freely moving squirrel monkeys.

A miniature telemetric system is described which allows simultaneous measurements of neural activity and vocalization in freely moving monkeys within their social group. Single and multi-unit activities were detected with medium impedance electrodes that were fixed to self-made microdrives allowing accurate vertical positioning over a range of 8 mm. Vocalizations were registered by means of a piezo-ceramic device sensing the vocalization-induced skull vibrations. This allowed identification of the vocalizing animal in a larger group and eliminated environmental noise. Neuronal activity and vocalization were transmitted via separate channels of a FM transmitter using different carrier frequencies. The signals were decoded in two conventional FM receivers equipped with an automatic frequency control. The signals were stored for off-line analysis on a HiFi videotape recorder.
