Abstract

The technique described results in a well adapted cast post and core with good retention (Figs. 18 and 19). The chances of perforation of the root and trauma to the patient are reduced, and the expense of the procedure is minimal. This system is adaptable to single- or multirooted teeth and continually produces good results with minimal problems.

Preparation of controlled release ophthalmic drops, for glaucoma therapy using thermosensitive poly-N-isopropylacrylamide.

In this study, controlled release ophthalmic agents for glaucoma therapy were developed based on the thermosensitivity of poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAAm). The clear solution of PNIPAAm was known to undergo phase transition when the temperature was raised from the room temperature to about 32 degrees C. The drug was entrapped in the tangled polymer chains or encapsulated within the crosslinked polymer hydrogel at room temperature, and released progressively after topical application (i.e., at a higher temperature). Linear PNIPAAm and crosslinked PNIAAm nanoparticles containing epinephrine were prepared. The drug release rate and cytotoxicity were investigated in vitro. Ophthalmic formulations based on either linear PNIPAAm or the mixture of linear PNIPAAm and crosslinked PNIPAAm nanoparticles were administered to rabbits and the intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering effect was evaluated. The decreased pressure response of the formulation based on linear PNIPAAm lasted six-fold longer than that of the conventional eye drop. Furthermore, for formulation based on the mixture of linear PNIPAAm and crosslinked nanoparticles, the pressure-lowering effect lasted eight times longer. These results suggest the use of thermosensitive polymer solutions or hydrogels is potential in controlled release antiglaucoma ophthalmic drugs.

The effect of photo-activated glazes on the microhardness of acrylic baseplate resins.

OBJECTIVE: A comparative investigation of acrylic denture base surface microhardness, induced through glazing with different photo-activated liquids. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thermopolymerized acrylic resin Paladon 65 (Kulzer) was used for this study. The samples were mechanically thinned by silicon carbide grinding papers and finally, mechanically polished by alumina pastes. The samples were then glazed with Palaseal, Plaquit and Lightplast-Lack photo-activated liquids. Microhardness tests were carried out via a Zeiss optical microscope equipped with an Anton Paar microhardness tester fitted with a Knoop indenter. RESULTS: Microhardness testing performed on surfaces glazed by Plaquit, Lightplast-Lack, and Palaseal photo-activated liquids showed enhanced microhardness values compared to the mechanically polished acrylic resin denture base material. CONCLUSIONS: Comparative microhardness tests performed on acrylic base resin treated with photo-activated acrylic glazes showed that all increases the surface microhardness. The enhancement of surface microhardness of acrylic denture bases suggests that they are likely to resist wear during service.
